Some thoughts on the controversy regarding over-the-counter anti-inflammatories for Covid-19. There have been reports that anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen, naproxen, etc.) may worsen Covid-19 (https://lnkd.in/gJ2fpj4) and it looks like this has become an official WHO position (https://lnkd.in/gpZ-PUb). So I am a bit surprised to see Dr. Fauci, who whom I have the greatest admiration, take this position. To some extent, though, he is right: indeed, we don't have any "scientific evidence" to support this contention by which he likely means "direct" scientific evidence. There have been no randomized clinical trials to answer the question. But I disagree to the extent that we do know some science about Covid-19 (and other viruses) and while this knowledge is incomplete and does not offer "direct" evidence (as in a rigorous study) we know enough to consider possible therapeutic strategies and the implications of anti-inflammatories either way.
