Theresa May’s future as Conservative leader beyond Brexit remains in question despite a successful conference speech.
Andrea Leadsom, leader of the House, refused to say that Mrs May should lead the Tories into the next election. She said that Mrs May had had a “fantastic day” but that “politics is a shorter-term game, a week changes a lot”.
Asked if Mrs May ought to remain as Tory leader for a 2022 general election, the cabinet minister told ITV’s Peston: “That’s all for the future. She has shown her absolute determination to fulfil the referendum.”
Her words were taken as a clear hint that Brexiteers expect the prime minister to stand down when the UK leaves the European Union in March.
