Onnoghen: Withdraw Charges Against CJN, Apologise, Ekweremadu Advises FG by Limitednow: 5:54am On Jan 14, 2019
Ike Ekweremadu, deputy Senate President, has advised the federal government to withdraw the corruption charges against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

Mr Onnoghen is scheduled for arraignment before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Monday, January 14, for allegedly omitting to declare his assets.

He is also accused of illegally operating five domiciliary accounts in various foreign currencies with Standard Chartered Bank since 2011.

Since the development was made public, Nigerians, including the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are reading political meanings to the six-count charge against the CJN, particularly because of the role the judiciary will be playing as the nation elect its leaders next month.

Advising the federal government to retrace its steps, Ekweremadu in a statement on Monday described the arraignment as dangerous for the nation’s democracy.

“I consider the charges against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, His Lordship, Justice Walter Onnoghen, as ill advised and dangerous, especially after similar attempts at the leadership of the National Assembly failed,” the top lawmaker belonging to the PDP said.

“This is extremely dangerous for our democracy and can only divide the nation further as well as mark us out as a country very low in upholding the rule of law and independence of the judiciary.

“I advice the Attorney General of the Federation to immediately withdraw the charges and apologise to the judiciary. We certainly can’t travel this road,” he said.

SOUTH SOUTH GOVERNORS KICKS

State governors of the South-South region on Sunday kicked against the planned arraignment of the CJN.

The governors who advised Onnoghen to ignore the summon of the CCT said they were not opposed to a genuine fight against corruption, as such an action must always be anchored on the rule of law.

“We call on the CJN to ignore this so-called court summons from the CCT and the provocative call for his resignation in some quarters,” Seriake Dickson, who read a communique of the emergency meeting of the governors said.

“While we are not opposed to a genuine fight against corruption, such an action must always be anchored on the rule of law,” they added.

Present at the meeting included the Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson; Nyesom Wike, (Rivers State); Ben Ayade, (Cross River); and Udom Emmanuel, (Akwa Ibom). Delta and Edo states’ governors were absent at the meeting.

It is obvious that some people deliberately misadvised the president on this issue.
A lot of people who have not read the petition have been busy running thier mouths. The CJN was never accused of stealing money. He was accused of not declaring some domiciliary account in 2009. It is important to note that he eventually declare all these accounts in 2016
The people who deliberately misadvised the president are only interested in causing more problems for him.

I feel sorry for Buhari govt, it's Prof Sa-gay that always give him bad advise. All SANs in the country are saying that FG is wrong, only Sagay is saying that the FG has the right to put the CJN on trial.

Sagay is a mole in APC

senate doesn't have the mechanism to trial any of their member.

But the judiciary has their own inbuilt institution that trials their own officers.

It once happened to bukola saraki and he was vindicated despite the glaring evidence against him.

CJN should appear before CCT while y'all in his support and defense should get him a good and sound lawyer if his own lawyer isn't competent.
Mike ozekhome the defender of looters, corrupt politicians and criminals is there, he will also join . sad

Fools keep supporting bad leaders, corrupt leaders and thieving politicians for foolishness sake thinking they're doing themselves favor.

Goodmorning to us all

I sympathise with the CJN completely. I know for sure that there are several others who have done worse but they only beam their search light on a few.
The rest Justices at all levels are not free from one error or the other neither Uwais or Murthar or Belgore and co.
It's a case of removing the speck in someone's eyes when there are others with logs, beams, columns and teak and iroko.
There is strong nepotism, corruption, selective justice, religious bigotry, discrimination going on, NO QUESTIONS ASKED
I'm of the view that if someone does something wrong no matter whose ox is gored let him face the consequences.
But what if this consequence has a lesser punishment?
Why ask a CJN to resign if he can have a lesser punishment?
My people, don't be deceived, if those we know from 2015 to date who have clearly erred in law and are still roaming free are from a certain part, party, participation and co, then you must agree that there is selective justice and systematic cleansing. There are hidden agenda going on in the guise of upholding justice and fighting corruption.
All over.

Meanwhile, please
NOTE THAT THROWING IN THE ISSUE OF THE CJN IS A MAJOR ACT OF DISTRACTING NIGERIA FROM MAJOR ISSUES.
PLEASE LOOK AT THE ISSUES BEFORE THIS CJN MATTER CAME AND NOTICE THAT NO ONE IS REPORTING ABOUT THEM.
ALSO LOOK AT ISSUES THAT WILL COME UP THIS WEEK THAT THEY WILL TRY AND DIVERT OUR ATTENTION FROM AND KEEP WITH THE CJN MATTER.
BE WARNED, IT CAN'T BE ONE WEEK ONE PROBLEM.

PLEASE DROP hardened hearts and minds and wash your eyes, even if it is your own dear, sweet biological child or mother that is doing wrong please don't support it. Remove double standard and prejudice. If not Nigeria will be in deep trouble and we will not know how we got there.

Pls follow up the story in its entirety, the same CJN you are talking about has admitted to this claims, that he "forgot", the question we should be asking is why a whole CJN will make such a dangerous omission.

While you people may be thinking it's the FG vs Justice Onnoghen, I believe there is something we are not seeing here something is afoot, cause am yet to understand why a whole CJN (with years of experience in Nigerian politics) will leave himself so exposed for these attacks. Cos I believe he was deliberately careless.

Well what do I know.

You just took the words outta my mouth. The man regularized the thing in 2016, but the FG, looking for anything to assist them with their malicious intent is stupid enough to think they can use it to unseat him.

Let them go and wait for him at the CCB today.
