Annual holiday concert to be performed at Assumption Abbey Dec. 92 min read

November 29, 2018

The Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Dickinson State University (DSU) invites the public to attend their annual holiday concert Sunday, Dec. 9, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Assumption Abbey in Richardton (418 3rd Ave W).

Enjoy performances from DSU’s Chamber Singers, Chorale and Concert Band. In addition to the Dickinson State University student performers, the concert will feature members of both the Dickinson and Bismarck communities. The Dickinson Choral Union, a community ensemble conducted by Dr. Brent Rogers, will perform in combination with the DSU Chorale. String and brass players from Dickinson and Bismarck will also perform as an orchestra at the concert.

The audience can expect to hear classic Christmas carols from the DSU chambers singers, as well as non-traditional songs associated with the holiday season that are more popular in other areas of the world. The DSU Chorale and Dickinson Choral Union will perform George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah” including the “Hallelujah Chorus” and a historical Renaissance piece dating from the 1570s.

The Concert Band will perform themes of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” as well as Gustav Holst’s suite “On This Day the Earth Shall Ring.” The concert will also feature a flute solo by Mayu Takahara, a student from Japan that is attending DSU. Takahara’s solo, “All is Calm,” was inspired by the Christmas carol “Silent Night.” During the concert finale, the Choral Union, orchestra and DSU Concert Band will come together for a final performance that includes an audience participation sing along.

The concert is intended for individuals ages 10 and above. Ticket prices are as follows: $10-adults, $5-seniors and children 10 – 17. DSU faculty, staff and students may attend free of charge with valid ID.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at dsuarts.com or by calling 701-483-2154. They will also be available at the door the night of the event.

Should severe weather occur, the concert will be performed at St. John Lutheran Church in Dickinson (146 6th Ave W). Any changes to the concert’s location will be announced Wednesday, Dec. 5. Check dsuarts.com for updates.
