As a huge fan of The Winston Brother's series by Penny Reid, I was SO excited to read about the famous Daisy Payton. When this book was announced I didn't know we would be reading bout Daisy's origin story, all the way back in the 70s, and it was such a treat to go back to see her in college. Also, kudos to Chelsie Edwards for doing a great job at depicting the time period, not only in describing it but making the feel of the time come through the page.
However, and this might be a little because I had such high expectations for Daisy, but the story just wasn't the super swoony romance I was looking for. Trevor, our hero, is a great character, and I really did see the chemistry between them. But in a lot of ways I think this was more about Daisy finding herself than about the romance per se. We see a lot about her journey with friends and family and the pressure she feels by carrying the Payton name - which means she comes from a wealthy and successful family.
Also, Upsy Daisy was rooted in a trope that is one of my pet peeves - miscommunication. I guess, that communication quick, open, and honest as we have today was not as possible in the 70s. Not only because people were more reserved, but of course modern technology wasn't a thing. So secrets are easier to be kept and misinterpretations of facts are easier as well. But. this trope specifically was dragged out for a very long time, and I just wanted to sit both Daisy and Trevor down for a minute and make them use their words.
I guess that in conclusion this was still very sweet and I'm glad to know more about Daisy's history. But I did want more from her story.

This is the story of Daisy Payton and Trevor Boone (yes, Simone's parents from Winston Brothers!). It's set in the '70s in Fisk University, a historically black college/university.
Daisy has the chance to be a different person—one that doesn't live under her family's shadow. Growing up she was treated differently because of her family name.
Trevor didn't have a lot growing up. He was abandoned by his parents and raised by his other relatives but they kind of neglected him. He's working hard in college to achieve his dreams and so he can finally live his life on his own terms without feeling like a burden.
There's this instant connection between them when they meet and it gets even better once they actually start getting to know each other. Trevor is the sweetest guy! Their cute moments had me grinning so hard. However, they do have bad timing and other personal things to work out which prevented their relationship to go forward. There is longing, mutual pining, and a bit of angst in the romance aspect of this book.
I do feel like this is more of a coming-of-age story for Daisy and Trevor. I'm glad there is a focus on their growth and that their character development was handled so well. There is definitely some romance but I do wish we had more scenes of just the two of them towards the end.
The side characters are sooo amazing. I love their personalities and what they brought into the story. It warms my heart seeing such a good female friendship dynamic among Daisy, James, and Odie especially after knowing how Daisy's peers treated her back in Green Valley.
There's also the AMAZING family dynamics as seen with the Paytons (Daisy's family) & Trevor, Jules, and Elodie. To be honest, as much as my heart feels so much for the main couple, Daisy and Trevor, I also felt so many emotions with the other couples (and potential couples) being mentioned.
Overall, I really enjoyed this! I have grown to love the characters immensely. Chelsie Edwards did a great job with Daisy and Trevor's backstory. I can't wait to read more from this series and the author!

I was stunned and awestruck to notice after reading this well-crafted missive, that this was the author’s debut publication. She has struck gold with the first swing, as a well-seasoned author could not have done better. I had three pages of marked notes, which were rather painful to pare down. I adored the premise as well as the engaging and emotive storylines, insightful and perceptive observations and inner musings, intriguing and enticing characters, every perfectly chosen and well-honed word, and the conundrum of Daisy and Trevor.
Oh, Daisy – you foolish girl - I have been you! Of course, also having entered college the same year as Daisy may have biased my opinion, but I doubt it. The lavish praise and kudos Ms. Edwards has and will amass from this cleverly penned tale are well deserved. I reveled in her excellent item choices to elicit the nostalgia and flavor of the mid-’70s including hot pants; cassettes; 8-tracks; The Temptations, and The Stylistics; and even I had an afro in my blonde hair, although mine came from a bottle as I’m such a pale white girl I’m practically albino. Sigh, another amazing new author to add to my watch list, I’m eager to see what she does next but it will be hard to top this one.

I loved the origin story about a beloved character from the Winston brothers series- Daisy Peyton!
Sure, the miscommunication is annoying as a plot twist, but I just enjoyed reading about the New Adult book set in the '70s.

my first smartypants 5 stars, and nothing short of what this book deserves!!
Going into this, I was a bit scared, eventhough it was one of my most anticipated releases of the year; and that was due to my lack of luck with books I was looking forward to this year.
I am happy to report that this did NOT disappoint. I absolutely and honestly loved everything about this book; there is literally not a single thing i didn't like about it! Out of all the smartypants books I've read so far, I feel like this is the only one who hit the mark for the Green Valley vibes for me, the writing was so on point, so beautiful that sometimes it was almost poetic. Which honestly just made me love the story even more.
The characters are all so well written and developped but none were flawless.
Daisy is one of the best protagonists I've read from. She is funny, charming, but also so achingly human, you can't help but relate to her. She makes questionable choices, multiples times, digging herself further and further into her own mess, which was refeshing to me because of how realistic it was.. I mean here was a character that was on her own for the first time in her entire life, she doesn't know it all and she's not supposed to; so she does what she thinks is best at the time, sometimes on a whim.. but that's ok. Eventhough sometimes you wanna scream at her that she's gonna regret it, you realize that this is her journey, and she needs to learn from her mistakes.. which she absolutely does! And this, alongside her development (personal, or relationship wise), just made me love her more!
Trevor, as for him, is one the most selfless characters I know, his selflessness sometimes even veers to self-sacrfice. He absolutely never hesitates to sacrifice his happiness for the sake of people he loves. He just makes you heart ache for him with the hand he was dealt, he hasn't had a perfect life, or even a good one. He was deserted by his parents at a young age and sent to a family who mostly neglected him when they weren't using him to better their son. But, as Daisy, Trevor is no different on the mistake making aspect. He screws up too, albeit having the best intentions going into those mistakes, but it doesn't make them any less so. But he doesn't just let them go, he owns up to them and learns from them, and in doing so, he takes your heart along the way.
I think Daisy and Trevor are the perfect match. Their chemistry is instant and impossible to ignore or deny. They're impossible not to fall for from the start, and as a self-proclaimed sucker for angst, theirs just stamped on my heart just the way I liked it. It was so good, so well-done and so !!!!!!! I have no words. It made me root for them, it made me frustrated at them, hurt for them, but oh how it made me love them!
And the goodness of this book does not end at these two, the side characters just made it all the more perfect.
I love me nothing more in a book than healthy sibling relationship and good female friendships. Which this book had in spades with Dolly and Daisy's relationship as well as Daisy, James and Odie's friendship.
Dolly and Daisy's relationship was kind of rocky through the book, what with Daisy wanting to find herlsef outside her family and small town fame due to her father and now sister's work; but their love and unconditional support for each other was never in question. Proven all the more with Dolly's lack of hesitation to drop everything and help her sister even when she was mad at her.
James and Odie, Daisy's best friends, are just as great as she is, which made their friendship all the more great and made me love it even more. They were always there for each other, always supporting each other through it all, and never gave up on each other.
I feel like I'm dragging this review so I will mention the other things in quick points :
- Julian!! Such a surprising character, that promises to break my heart if he gets a book, I just know it. Even as a side character, the layers of his character were already showing.
- Trevor, Julian and Elodie's friendship! Absolutely loved it! Their loyalty to each other is unquestionable, especially Trevor and Julian! And how they supported Elodie and helped her when they found out her secret? I LOVE THEM!!!
- The Julian/James and Odie/Charlie crumbs! OH MY. I need their books!!!!
This was, without a doubt, one of my favorite reads of the year, and I have a feeling it might end up being one of my favorite books ever.
I am so beyond excited for the rest of this series, and I hope the upcoming books will be JamesxJules as well as OdiexCharlie's stories and written by the same author!

"I loved that. Loved that he spoke as though it would be, just because I wanted it to be. That belief alone made it possible."
I put "Upsy Daisy" on my TBR five seconds after seeing the cover for the first time because it was just the cutest thing in the world and I loved that the main character would be black. After some time, I started reading the Winston Brothers series and then I fell in love with Daisy Payton and everything she built in Green Valley. Now, after reading this book, I can honestly say that she’s one of the best characters in the world and I’m so glad that we got the chance to see her "origin" story.
Daisy Payton grew up in a privileged household because her dad was the first black person appointed to the judgeship in Tennessee and he was the owner of the mill responsible for employing most of Green Valley’s population. For those reasons, everyone thought Daisy had the perfect life, but after just a few chapters, you can see how wrong they were. She dealt with many insecurities that stemmed from a life being excluded because 1) she was black 2) she was rich. The loss of beloved family members also took its toll on Daisy, but since she was so privileged, she thought she didn’t have the right to complain about anything.
One of my favorite aspects of the book was seeing how Daisy handled all of her feelings. She struggled to accept her family’s name because she just wanted people to see her for who she is and not the material things she has. Some of her choices regarding the use of the “Payton” last name might annoy a few readers, but they didn’t bother me at all because they all felt real and justified. Also, she learned a lot from her mistakes and really tried to make up for everything wrong she did. Her growth was just incredible and I ended the book very proud of her.
Besides all the heavier topics, Daisy was just the smartest, cutest, sweetest and funniest girl in the world. She handled everything with such grace, patience and determination that I couldn’t not admire her. From choosing to double major, to making cookie sales to help her friends and ignoring someone for the whole semester, Daisy showed just how unique and special she was.
While reading "Dr. Strange Beard" I thought Trevor Boone was an incredible father and husband. Now that I’ve met his younger version, I can see why he was such a great example for Simone, Roscoe and everyone who’s ever met the Payton family. Trevor didn’t have the easiest childhood and the only way he found to turn things around was to be an excellent student. He really did his best to get into one of the best HBCUs in the country and thankfully, all of his sacrifices paid off.
I loved to see his reasoning to get into finance and it was incredible to see how passionate he was about using a position of power to help those who need the most. He was also a loyal friend to his cousin and best friend and I liked that their relationship was kind of a found family trope. And God, I can’t even describe how perfect he was with Daisy. I can definitely understand why she was smitten with him from the start lol
Daisy and Trevor’s relationship was kind of insta-love, but not in an annoying sort of way. Their instant connection was very believable and beyond sweet. They were so eager to talk, hold hands and just be by each other’s side that I couldn’t help but root for them to be together. You know when two people are such good friends that you think "oh, they could definitely work out as a couple"? That’s Daisy and Trevor for me.
I also went crazy with the amount of angst because it was so well done. I could feel their longing, anger and frustration as if they were happening to me. However, what I didn’t like is that after they spent some time apart and got back together, there weren’t many scenes of them being a real couple. When they finally settled all their problems, the book was almost ending. That was a little disappointing, I’m not gonna lie.
Considering the book was set in 1975 and all the characters in the book were black, race issues were one of the main topics of the book. Chelsie Edwards addressed them perfectly because it made you reflect and realize how real those problems are even after 45 years. The scene where a character tells James she was "gorgeous for a dark-skinned girl" was sad because of the internalized racism and because black people are constantly considered less. I also need to mention how good the representation was because everything felt natural and all the characters had their own personalities without any stereotypes. Own-voices books like "Upsy Daisy" are real gems.
I couldn’t finish this book without talking about the side characters. Considering this wasn’t a book heavily focused on the romance, Dolly, James, Odie, Julian, Charlie, Elodie and Grace appearances made all the difference in the world. It’s really rare for me to get invested in all the side characters in a book, so I can’t even tell you how happy I am that I loved them all. Each one of them has their own stories and struggles and I hope I can find out all their mysteries in the next books in the series.
Dolly was the perfect sister for Daisy. She worried for her, rooted for her, advised her and laughed with her. Their dialogues were very precious to me and I wish I had a sister like Dolly while growing up. Can I just say how much I want to read her story to see if she’ll end up with a certain someone? Chelsie, please write a book for Dolly. I’m begging you hahaha
Also, James, Odie and Daisy were the power trio I didn’t know I needed in my life. Their friendship was goals and their dynamic was funny and endearing. I love it when the main character of a book has a life outside of her relationship, so this was just the cherry on the cake (or should I say sprinkles on top of the doughnut? lmao I’m the worst at making jokes bye)
So yeah, if it wasn’t clear after this long ass review, I definitely recommend "Upsy Daisy" if you’re looking for a book with great representation, an amazing group of friends, a cute romance and amazing development arcs.

He was also a loyal friend to his cousin and best friend and I liked that their relationship was kind of a found family trope. And God, I can’t even describe how perfect he was with Daisy. I can definitely understand why she was smitten with him from the start lol
Daisy and Trevor’s relationship was kind of insta-love, but not in an annoying sort of way. Their instant connection was very believable and beyond sweet. They were so eager to talk, hold hands and just be by each other’s side that I couldn’t help but root for them to be together. You know when two people are such good friends that you think "oh, they could definitely work out as a couple"? That’s Daisy and Trevor for me.
I also went crazy with the amount of angst because it was so well done. I could feel their longing, anger and frustration as if they were happening to me. However, what I didn’t like is that after they spent some time apart and got back together, there weren’t many scenes of them being a real couple. When they finally settled all their problems, the book was almost ending. That was a little disappointing, I’m not gonna lie.
Considering the book was set in 1975 and all the characters in the book were black, race issues were one of the main topics of the book. Chelsie Edwards addressed them perfectly because it made you reflect and realize how real those problems are even after 45 years. The scene where a character tells James she was "gorgeous for a dark-skinned girl" was sad because of the internalized racism and because black people are constantly considered less. I also need to mention how good the representation was because everything felt natural and all the characters had their own personalities without any stereotypes. Own-voices books like "Upsy Daisy" are real gems.
I couldn’t finish this book without talking about the side characters. Considering this wasn’t a book heavily focused on the romance, Dolly, James, Odie, Julian, Charlie, Elodie and Grace appearances made all the difference in the world. It’s really rare for me to get invested in all the side characters in a book, so I can’t even tell you how happy I am that I loved them all. Each one of them has their own stories and struggles and I hope I can find out all their mysteries in the next books in the series.
Dolly was the perfect sister for Daisy. She worried for her, rooted for her, advised her and laughed with her. Their dialogues were very precious to me and I wish I had a sister like Dolly while growing up. Can I just say how much I want to read her story to see if she’ll end up with a certain someone? Chelsie, please write a book for Dolly. I’m begging you hahaha
Also, James, Odie and Daisy were the power trio I didn’t know I needed in my life. Their friendship was goals and their dynamic was funny and endearing. I love it when the main character of a book has a life outside of her relationship, so this was just the cherry on the cake (or should I say sprinkles on top of the doughnut? lmao I’m the worst at making jokes bye)
So yeah, if it wasn’t clear after this long ass review, I definitely recommend "Upsy Daisy" if you’re looking for a book with great representation, an amazing group of friends, a cute romance and amazing development arcs.

I can’t believe this is Chelsie Edward’s first book!
Give me All the feels of first time love! This is what Upsy Daisy was and so much more. I’ve had this book for over a year, and when I saw that the audio had released, I snagged it.
I love historical romances of all kinds, but this one was extra special. Set in the 70’s in college where schools were integrated, but white and black people still kept to themselves.
The moment when Trevor Boone, a Senior, met Daisy Payton, a new freshman—his life was over. It was literally love at first sight! I love the details in which Chelsie wrote this book. The descriptions of Daisy’s beautiful curly coily hair. The way Trevor’s would run his fingers over a lock and have the slight sheen of oil on his fingers. The way he would describe her skin, and the way it would shine. All these details matter so much to me because I could fully see myself in this character.
I love that this is an origin story for a character that we’ve seen all throughout Green Valley and the Winston Brothers books. This gives us the glimpse into Daisy’s life and how she got her start, and later we know that she owns and runs Daisy’s Nut House. Love that!!
Daisy comes from wealth, and wanted to hide who she was at college so she held back some truth, and paid for it. I love that right alongside this blooming coming of age love story, you have this amazing girl gang that I desperately found myself wanting to be a part of. I loved reading about James & Odessa Mae just as much as I did about Trev & Daisy.
I loved the way Trev described his feelings for Daisy throughout this story.

For me, the descriptive language used throughout was impeccable. Author Chelsie Edwards is remarkably talented at setting the scene. Her ability to describe everything enveloping her protagonists and how it shaped them as individuals is incredible. It helped shape the narrative and the surrounding social landscape, from the era it is set in, to the funky and dazzling array of clothes, it helped bring forth the music, the dialogue and above all, Chelsie is able to paint a very vivid picture of the racial prejudices that were (still are) rampant, the racism that was scathingly casual and the men and women who fought back against it with poise and love.
There was one scene in particular that I felt right to my core, one that was written so well, subtle but jarring in its makeup. I can’t go into details because it’s one that you need to read and absorb on your own, in order for the profundity of that chapter to hit you and I try to stay away from whooping big spoilers in any of my reviews. But I will say that this particular scene highlighted for me just how amazing and strong the women in Upsy Daisy are, as a team of close tight knit girlfriends and as courageous independent women. It also showed me how wonderful Trevor our lead male protagonist is, as his chivalrous and heroic nature makes an appearance. Not in an over-the-top alpha hero kind of way but in a more sedate, intelligent and thought out mode.
Another thing I adored was the friendship between Daisy, our lead female protagonist and her best friends James and Odie. Three very different women, from different backgrounds, who come together on the first day of college and form an incredibly real and inexplicable bond of sisterhood. This bond becomes more and more evident as they lean on one another, champion each other and support each other. Their actions often demonstrate how selfless and loyal they are. They are not your typical side characters, content to stay in the background. They are certainly not the quintessential romance story BFFs, that are there to get the heroine drunk and coerce her into doing stupid regretable things. These are the girls that are there to support, talk, hug, get you drunk but hold your hair back for you afterwards and keep you from drunk-dialling your ex, kind of friends. The kind every heroine needs in her life.
I loved any and every scene when Daisy and Trevor interacted. He is such a sweetheart, how he feels, his inner monologues, his speech, it all conglomerates and forms a very swoon-worthy, smooth, charismatic hero.
I liked Daisy’s character development. How she struggles to find her true self in college and goes from hiding who she is to finally accepting it. Embracing it. She starts off running away from so much, bad memories, pain and uncertainty. And in the end she becomes more self assured. Her desire to help and prove her love for her friends and family gets her into trouble but it also reveals a lot about her. The fact that she inspires others to take a stand for her, says a lot about her character and the emotions she evokes in others. She was sweet and a little lost but that made witnessing her progression from chapter one to the end that more profound.
It was a great story, well written, with some beautiful moments. It was profound and poignant, heartbreaking, detailing some key issues such as racism and sexuality, poverty and abuse. Chelsie is definitely a very talented, intelligent and remarkable story teller and I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next.

4 1/2 "School daze" Stars!
This was so good. For me it was all about being in college at an HBCU in the 1970s. I have to say that was the part that really captured my attention. The music, the fashion, the friendships, the cookie capers the political scene.(There is not much here, I promise. There's just enough to establish the time period.) The whole college experience in the 70s. Made me want a time machine. I loved it!
The thing is, the love story was here; Trevor and Daisy were center stage for sure, but the romance, romane wasn't. They had a lot of miscommunication and weren't together for most of the book. There was a lot of pinning and some angst though. It was more of a coming if age story. I loved all that, but I also missed the romance. That doesn't mean there wasn't a love story here. There absolutely was.
Getting to know Daisy's of Daisy's Nut House in Green Valley- (Winston Brothers) origin story was just a pleasure. Turns out Daisy has always been such a sweetheart. I loved it.
I am now hoping and wishing and crossing my fingers and toes for James and Jules to get a book. Happy reading!

Anyone who has read many of the Green Valley books knows about Daisy Peyton and her amazing cookies. In this book we get to read her story.
This is an adorable love story set in the 1970's. Daisy is off to college and wants to a little less notoriety than she has back in Green Valley. Our heroine wants to blend in more and not rely on her parents quite as much. It was just a little change. Nothing really big. Just a couple of letters, that change everything for her.
Then she meets a guy. They hit it off right away, and that's when the trouble starts.
A cute romance that fits in perfectly with the PennyVerse.

I knew I had to read this book when I saw the cover. How cute is this? Daisy Payton was one of the side characters in the Winston brothers series and I was happy when I saw that she got her own story.
– the first 40% of this book was pretty good. Both the hero and heroine of the story are super smart, nice and they were cute together. Daisy and Trevor are adorable together. They are one of the softest couple. The female friendship between Daisy, James and Odie is great as well. Loved these three together.
– but then from there one everything went downhill. Daisy and Trevor both have secrets and they starting to come out. And from that point, there is a LACK OF COMMUNICATION between Trevor and Daisy. I'm not exaggerating when I say that between 40% and 80% of the book, these two barely interact, because they ignore e/o existence. When they talk to each other it's either in a fit of jealousy or to fight more about some of the lies each of them have told. It was annyoing and tiresome.
– I just hate it when the couple spent so many scenes apart. Pair it with the shitty communication and I was not happy about it. Therefore it was really tough to get through the story, cause even though Daisy and Trevor had other things going on, it did not interested me as much.
– Daisy was bad at communication, not only with Trevor but with her whole family. She's ignoring her sister the whole time she's in college while Dolly just wants her to call. It's not that hard to pick up a phone. I LOVED the scene when Dolly visited Daisy and exploded on her. Dolly's speech was so good. PREACH AND GO GIRL! 👏👏👏
– At one point Jules, Trevor's best friend, tells Daisy Trevor's secret and that's something I didn't like. I'd rather the main characters come to the conclusion or tell the other their secret themselves instead of a third party giving away the whole story.
– I loved all the side characters. James, Odie, Trevor were a huge part in the book and really saved the middle. Trevor went from being a character I disliked to probably my fav character. That's a win. I hope James and Jules will get their own book.

I loved this book so much and I think it might be my favorite from all the Smartypants romance books! I instantly fell in love with Daisy and Trevor and their relationship, their chemistry was off the charts as soon as they met at Fisk University. Their relationship was insta love but also slow burn and I enjoyed it a lot, but I wish we got more moments between Daisy and Trevor as a couple. What I also really loved about this book was the side characters and the friendships and I hope we'll see more of them in the other books of this series!!!

Yeah, helpful like a viper. You mind me and keep away from that boy. He’s handsome as the devil and knows it. Young men like that prey on freshman girls all the time.
I can’t get over how good this story was. This was the cutest meet cute and these two were instantly attracted to each other. And I loved this from beginning to end. Trevor was so suave and Daisy was beautiful. I loved reading about these two so much. It was great. One of my favorite part of this story was how well developed the characters were. All of them. From the school cafeteria workers to the parents, any and every character presented in this story felt real. I just wanted to keep reading forever.
“She didn’t do anything!” I protested. “That’s right. She didn’t do anything. Sometimes doing nothing is what’s wrong, Daisy. If something wrong is happening to someone, and you do nothing to help or to stop it when it’s within your power to do so, then what you are you doing is wrong.”
This story was also deep. It was layered in history and Fisk University. It reminded me so much of college, freshman move in day, and the dreaded book store. It was full of so much good things. And the drama was delicious. Usually I’m angry and don’t get me wrong, I was angry, but at the same time I understood and that’s what made this story emotionally deep. Trevor was a good guy through and through. When someone lives with this high level of morals life can be very unfair when others don’t. And Daisy, sweet Daisy. She just wanted to live outside her family’s shadow.
I can’t recommend this book enough. It was full of heart. It was full of sexy characters. Daisy and Trevor were on fire every time they were left alone. Seriously. Fire. *happy sigh* I just found out it’s part of a series and I can’t wait to read the next book! I loved all the characters so much I don't care which one is next. Dolly, the older sister. James or Odie, the best friends. Even Julian, Trevor’s cousin. There are so many possibilities. So many great characters.

Trevor was a good guy through and through. When someone lives with this high level of morals life can be very unfair when others don’t. And Daisy, sweet Daisy. She just wanted to live outside her family’s shadow.
I can’t recommend this book enough. It was full of heart. It was full of sexy characters. Daisy and Trevor were on fire every time they were left alone. Seriously. Fire. *happy sigh* I just found out it’s part of a series and I can’t wait to read the next book! I loved all the characters so much I don't care which one is next. Dolly, the older sister. James or Odie, the best friends. Even Julian, Trevor’s cousin. There are so many possibilities. So many great characters.

this book took me by surprise and i can't choose what i liked best about it. maybe it was the healthy and supportive female friendship? it could be the sisterhood between dolly and daisy? the fact that the characters felt very real, with their flaws and everything? or perhaps it may be the fact that the side characters were just as good as the leading ones? could it be the writing style and the era in which the book is located, making you feel that you are there without giving you unnecessary information? the rep? or is it perhaps that i feel identified with the way daisy bottles her feelings? maybe it's the relationship between daisy and trevor, even when it was full of miscommunication and i hate that trope, but the angst was too good to ignore?
i don't know but even if you have no idea about this universe in which the books are located, you should read it as a standalone. it was so worth it, at least for me.
now the real question is, where is my odessacharlie book? and jamesjulian? and what happened between dolly and paul? what was that devastating conversation that daisy overheard?

I really enjoyed this. Chelsie was such an incredible addition to the Smartypants authors lineup. Her writing fits so well within the Green Valley world and I genuinely felt transported to this universe that I love so much!
I did really love Daisy and Trevor but I felt like the book was too long and in some parts it dragged a bit, with too much detailed information. Sometimes it felt like the romance was put to the side and in my opinion it lacked a little bit more development.
I loved the side characters sooo much! They added so much to the story as a whole and the great personalities that made it easy to root for them!
I’m excited to read more by chelsie!

I have to admit that when I picked this book, I didn’t really read the description. I saw the title and thought it was cute, the author was a new to me one so I was curious and it was apart of the pennyverse and I’m all about the pennyverse. So when I finally did read, and comprehend, who the book was about, I was pleasantly surprised since Daisy, or at least Daisy’s Nut House, is a prominent and well loved piece of the Green Valley world and I was all in and found this book to a fun and quite emotional read filled with a cast of characters I really want to spend a lot more time with.
Daisy and Trevor. I loved these two, I did, but man did they try me. Both are sweet, compassionate and simply good people. They are driven, sometimes to the point of being blinded by what’s right in front of them, and though they have this vibe that welcomes you in, they also hold people at arm’s length. Their journey was all kinds of slow burn goodness.The bumps in their road were numerous, and quite frustrating, but I loved them together. They had this flow that made it easy to believe that they could have it all, if only they took their blinders off.
This was a fun read. The writing was engaging, I enjoyed the dual first person POV’s and I loved how the author brought the 70’s and Fisk university to life. She brought out that “simpler times” feel and yet showed that even in what many call the good ‘ol days, many of the same issues we are dealing with were alive and well at that time as well. My only issue was that there were times, especially in the beginning, where the pacing did drag for me, but things did pick up at about half way and I couldn’t put it down. As for the supporting cast of characters. All were very well written and I don’t have an absolute favorite of the bunch, but I’m totally looking forward to getting to know all of them a lot better as the series progresses.

1. The story starts in 1975 when Daisy is a freshman at Fisk university where on her first day she meets Trevor who is a senior there. We learn a bit more about Daisy in the beginning chapters. She is an innocent, smart, confident, kind, beautiful and walled up kind of girl who has a hard time dealing with her emotions and prefers to lock them down rather than talk about them. She is also tired of being a 'Payton' and for once just wants to be 'Daisy', to be herself, who isn’t the daughter of a rich, powerful and influential man. To do that she decides to change her name in college so that no one discovers who she actually she.
2. Trevor has lived a complete opposite life from Daisy. His parents had a financial crisis which forced them to send Trevor to live with their distant relatives, the Marshalls, who were anything but kind to him. Growing up thinking his own parents didn’t want him, the ones who raised him thought of him as a burden, he grew up with a lot of emotional baggage. Now his one and only goal is to study hard and worked harder so that he never has to depend on anyone else. Trevor, despite growing up in worst conditions had a heart of gold. He was helpful, compassionate, caring, loyal to a fault, understanding and intelligent. His friendship with Jules and Elodie highlighted all of his qualities and how supportive and loving he was towards both of them.
3. The first 10% of the book was taken by the back story of both the characters which I think was a bit of an overshare. I like characters who are mysterious and as story progresses you get little glimpses of them and get to know them slowly rather than characters who are open books from the start. After chapter two I felt like I knew all there was to know about Daisy and Trevor.
4. As story progresses Daisy and Trevor become good friends despite the secrets they were keeping from each other. I liked the chemistry between them. It wasn’t a story of instant love though there definitely was an instant attraction and pull on both the sides. I liked how they had so many things in common yet were still opposite at times. The author did a good job writing their love story as I highly enjoyed all parts of their interactions that were in the book.
5. I also loved the side characters and the beautiful and true friendships displayed in the book. Jules was a true friend to Trevor, the kind who was there for you without asking him to be and his character was the one I liked most. He made an effort to understand Trevor and to find out what was going on with him even though he was being reclusive and not sharing his troubles with him. Daisy’s friends were a solid team too. I liked how there was mention of their love story here and there. I definitely wished for more of Odie and Charlie.
6. Book also gave great detail on the education system in the west, college life and life at Fisk University. If you are one for details and knowing as much as you can about the world where the story is set, this one is for you. The world building was done well as I didn’t at any point doubt the story was based in 1975 with the way everything was described.
7. One thing that disappointed me was that the story was more focused on Daisy and her quest to be herself and live freely than their love story. I like a well constructed plot where there is more than just romance going on but here the story was more on sidetrack. Daisy and Trevor were at odds with each other almost half of the book if not more.

Upsy Daisy was the origin story I never knew I needed! Chelsie Edwards transports readers back to the world of 1975 and truly brings the history, fashion and culture to life. Daisy and Trever Peyton are well known and loved supporting characters from the Winston Brother series. They were the breakout stars for me from Dr. Strange Beard. You could tell their relationship was so strong so it was really fun about how they met and fell in love.
Upsy Daisy was the first Smartypants story that takes place in college and it was fun to be back in that world. Daisy and Trever were two lovable characters who truly brought out the best in each other. In a world where you are trying to fit in and impress others, they were able to truly be themselves with one another and grow. This book was filled with first love, young adult angst and the tough and amazing things about the 70’s. I love every page and hope to read more from Chelsie in the future. Upsy Daisy can be read as a stand alone or in conjunction with the rest of the fabulous books set in Green Valley.

Loved all the 70s feels and I am blown away that this is Chelsie's debut. She did such a great job with the setting, fun cast of characters, the conflicts and resolutions. Sometimes I find the characters in a college setting come across as a bit mindless and immature. Not the case here! Recommend to fans of the Smartypants Universe for a slow burn and great ending.

A tender novel that had me believing in love at first sight and the power of friendship from a debut author that I cannot wait to read from again!
Can I just say that I love Smartypants Romance? Penny Reid had such a genius idea to expand her Pennyuniverse so that we could get more from her amazing characters. PLUS, it has brought my attention to amazing new authors, like Chelsie Edwards, who knock my socks off with their debut writing. I loved reading Daisy Payton’s story in Upsy Daisy and hope to read many, many more books from Edwards. She can start with the rest of the characters in this book because I NEED THEM ALL! But I’m getting ahead of myself…
In Upsy Daisy, Daisy Payton is a freshman at college ready to start a new chapter in her life, on her own and away from the pressures associated with the family name Payton. On move in day she meets Trevor Boone, a senior who’s biding his time until he graduates and can unload the burdens that have been weighing on him. Neither Daisy or Trevor expected or anticipated their instant attraction but barriers ultimately arise that try to block their potential start at something more.
This book takes you back to the 1970s! I should have known this since we are reading about Daisy Payton in college after having already met her as a mom and business owner later in life in Penny Reid’s Winston Brothers series, but it took me by surprise none the less when I first started reading. It’s probably the first romance book that I’ve read set in this time period and it was glorious, especially due to the clothes references. Can I have Daisy wardrobe please? Amazing.
I fell in love with the clothes because Edwards writing was so descriptive that you felt like you were right there in the dorm room or outside the frat party or literally feeling all the feels that these characters were going through. And boy were there feelings going on!
This book was not your “typical” romance book. It was really so much more. Yes, it centered around Daisy Payton and Trevor Boone and their instant attraction and growing fascination with one another, but this book really had so many engaging themes within it. It delved into friendship, the bonds of family, the importance of loyalty, honesty, forgiveness and grace. It also peered into the different social stratas, familial expectations and grief. Now that is A LOT to cover in one book but Edwards does it so brilliantly that I didn’t want the book to end.
There were just so many heart wrenching and heartwarming conversations between characters that I highlighted like mad because they all really spoke to me.
This book was ultimately about so many relationships in the book. Of course there was Daisy and Trevor and the attraction that jumped from the page just from them getting to know one another. But there was also the friendships Daisy forged with her two best girlfriends, James and Odie, and the brotherhood Trevor had with his cousin Jules. I also loved what we learned about Daisy and her relationship with her older sister Dolly and her father. I seriously need some follow ups to this book pronto. There are so many stories just simmering at the surface that I really, really need including James and Jules, Odie and Charlie and Dolly and the preacher.
It must be so daunting to put words to the page as a new author and then let them out in the world, but kudos and thanks to Edwards for taking the leap because this book brought me such joy. I cannot wait to read her next one!

I guess I hadn’t quite realized when I started this one that it was going to be set in the recent past, an origin story if you will, for Daisy of Daisy’s Nut House in our beloved Winston Brothers series. While the majority of it did not actually take place in Green Valley, there was a fun little bit around Christmas time when we even got to see a baby Bethany Winston. Well, not a baby, she was like 6 years old I think, and not a Winston yet, but it made me squeal out loud to see her! I know she’s one that would be really hard for an origin story, because it’s impossible to think that we could have any happy story with the father of that clan, but that’s another story, and lets get back to how wonderful this one was!
It was set in 1975, when I was only 3 years old, so I don’t actually remember most of the fashion and clothes other than pictures that I try to hide of how my mom dressed me. But it was so much fun reading about them, and how hot pants and jumpsuits and bra tops were a thing at the time. Also the roller skating party for a fraternity or college thing tickled me due to how it has turned into maybe an elementary or middle school thing, if you actually still have a rink in your town. Or it was before all the craziness of this pandemic. But once again I digress.
I loved Daisy, I loved Trevor. Both did their own little lies to cause issues in the relationship. Although neither meant for them to hurt the other, and both had such good reasons. Both also had good reasons for not telling like I always complain the characters should just come clean usually in romances. But no, the reasons they kept it quiet made a lot of sense.
I’d consider this more New Adult because of being set in a college, and it was so unique to read a story set in an HBCU (Historically Black College and University). Something that I personally haven’t had a chance to read about, yet at my current school where I am a librarian, my students are always looking to go to one, so it was informative and fun for me to read.
The characters were all really well rounded and stood out from the pages. Like I said, reading about their wardrobe choices was fun to imagine the picture in my head! My eyes just about popped at the bit about a two hour church service, when I was younger, an hour was pretty much how long it was, unless it was a special Christmas or Easter or Confirmation ceremony. But I guess for other religions it is probably more like the two hours. The steamy level in this was mostly saved for the end, just a kiss or two here or there throughout the rest of the book, although the characters did have their feelings about each other that were both emotional and physical spelled out as the story progressed.

The steamy level in this was mostly saved for the end, just a kiss or two here or there throughout the rest of the book, although the characters did have their feelings about each other that were both emotional and physical spelled out as the story progressed.
All in all, a wonderful story, I really loved it so much, I’m embarrassed to say so much more than I thought I would when I began and realized it was set in the 70s. Another wonderful, great addition to the Green Valley World, and the Smarty Pants Universe!

I don’t even know how to express how much I absolutely adored this book! The writing, the feels, the storytelling were so perfect I dove into the story and just never wanted to come up for air.
