Two years ago, Gavin Hunter got the send-off of a lifetime before heading overseas for what would be his last tour of duty. Now he’s back, but he’s changed from the things he’s seen. Every detail of his best friend’s wedding weekend is torture… every detail, that is, except for a bright-haired, tattooed, wild bridesmaid whose kiss is still seared into his memory.
Kate Lennox can take a hint, and it’s obvious that the soldier she kissed so eagerly years ago is no longer interested in pursuing that connection that sparked between them. Still, she’d do anything to drive that sad look from his eyes, the one that only disappears when she’s around.
Gavin still wants her, but he knows he’s in no shape to start anything more. But when he remembers just how perfect Kate is for him, he knows he has to do what is right to keep from dragging her down with him.
Lauren Hawkeye/ Lauren Jameson never imagined that she'd wind up telling stories for a living... though when she looks back, it's easy to see that she's the only one who is surprised. Always "the kid who read all the time", Lauren made up stories about her favorite characters once she'd finished a book... and once spent an entire year narrating her own life internally. No, really. But where she was just plain odd before publication, now she can at least claim to have an artistic temperament.
Lauren lives in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada with her husband, toddler, pit bull and idiot cat, though they do not live in an igloo, nor do they drive a dogsled. In her nonexistent spare time Lauren can be found knitting (her husband claims that her snobby yarn collection is exorbitant), reading anything she can get her hands on, or sweating her way through spin class. She loves to hear from her readers!
If you are looking for a touching, complex, hawt holiday read, pick up this book. Instead of telling you about the story, I will say that the main characters – Gavin Hunter and Kate Lennox – are two people who have a world of hurt in their pasts (Gavin more recent than Kate) but are trying/struggling to move on with their lives the best way they know how…until they meet each other. It is the second of a series however it is totally a standalone; I just enjoyed catching up with characters from the first book.
Kate is strong, but her layers of vulnerability shine thru. Gavin has the military thing going on – when we first meet him, he is sexy-and-I-know-it, confident, and that swagger –as the book progresses, we see his vulnerable side that made me just fall in love with him. He and Kate are a great match, even when they take their time figuring it out.
Loved the story, the Christmas-y is the time of year when most of it takes place, and thoroughly enjoyed these two figuring life out. LOVE when Gavin finds out Kate owns a yoga studio, and is very “bend-y”. I think I snort-laffed. Seriously, it’s a hawt, smexy story that will make your heart melt. Happy holidays to me.
I seriously have to give this book 5 stars because of the touching, emotional, tear-jerking story that Lauren Hawkeye created. Between two people that are reconnecting over a brief encounter, to the fallout of his secrets, to the lengths they both go through. It had me in tears. I honestly had to stop reading this book a few times because I was honestly crying for the characters, but I'm glad that I finally finished it, and I loved it!!!
