The Lee Cricket Club Sun XI v Little Missenden Misfits on Sun 14 Jul 2019 at 13:00
The Lee Cricket Club Won by 137 runs
Match report
It was the most important Sunday in the summer sports calendar, and obviously the highlight was The Lee vs Misfits; so all attention focused on Manor Park, and a nation held its breath. So much was at stake, many couldn't bear to watch and so took the easy option of England vs NZ at some London ground.
Before the toss, and to engineer what we hoped would be a close contest, Ben Harris and Rob Walsh were demoted from the elite Lee XI, and we brought in Sam Harris and Pat Walsh, in a canny piece of negotiation, thereby strengthening The Lee, and weakening the Misfits. So it proved. Winning the toss, The Lee batted first. Mike Harris and Jules Swain faced Rob Walsh, and Jordan Essex, and put on 33 before Mike fell lbw to Jordan. This brought in Stephen Gardner, given an opportunity to build an innings, which he took and made his highest ever score. He and Jules put on a superb partnership of 135, when Jules was stumped for an excellent 106. Matt Yeabsley, in his first game for a couple of years, was solid and stylish but in a foretaste of later, fell on unlucky 13, the first victim of an eccentric spell by Ed Hopkins, mixing good balls with high full tosses. His inadvertent changes of pace did for Matt, Rob Pickles and Jon Swain. 3-23 off 2 overs tells a story... Ed Boakes steadied a listing ship with a good unbeaten 18*, and helped Stephen to 87, a nightmare number for any Aussie (13 less than 100) and sure enough, the gremlins stopped him getting a maiden 100. It was an excellent knock, and a cameo from Y W-S got us to 263 off 40 overs. Pauline and Rob Pickles provided an excellent repast for the teams, and after serious inroads were made, Misfits began their task. Ed Boakes hit wicket-taking form again, with 3 in 4 balls en route to 4-29, and he was far too good for Ben Harris; unlucky to have a good shout for lbw turned down first ball, it wasn't long before the next was given. The other turncoat (rob Walsh) fared no better against Matt Yeabsley, and was bowled by a peach. Amongst the mayhem, Will Young provided a frenetic running commentary on all that was occurring; even his own batting didn't escape. Failing to heed his own advice to a teammate, he pranced down the wicket to drive at Guy Morgan , only to miss and be stumped. Guy was as effective as ever, and shown far too much respect by Jonny Bellwood, (this week donning Misfit colours) flourishing his forward defensive at the ball when runs were required. Sam Harris was unlucky not to snare one of the hapless Misfits, but Rob Pickles came on, found his rhythm swiftly, and dispatched Jonny Bellwood with a fine delivery. After a superb pick up and throw on the run, Matt Yeabsley ran out Langstaff, and the skipper then took the last wicket. Another good win, even after donating two of our feted young players to the Misfits, and well played all the team. Thanks to Guy and Pat for umpiring in our innings, and Caitlin for scoring as beautifully as ever. Great that she could record Stephen's highest score. After all the excitement on the field, we were able to relax watching the end of the World Cup Final...
It was marvellous to be with friends to witness that historic win by 137 runs, and then also see England succeed at long last! The grace in defeat from the Kiwis was a great lesson to us all.
