Post office renamed after Jimi Hendrix
A post office on the street where Jimi Hendrix grew up in Washington state is being renamed in his honour.
The Renton Highlands Post Office located at 4301 Northeast 4th Street in the Seattle suburb of Renton will now be known as the James Marshall ‘Jimi’ Hendrix Post Office in memory of the legendary musician.
It’s located less than a mile from the Jimi Hendrix Memorial in the Greenwood Memorial Park cemetery, where he is laid to rest.
Washington State Representative Adam Smith proposed the renaming in July of last year as part of an ongoing drive to celebrate the musical legacy of Seattle and its surrounding areas.
The bill to rename the post office was signed into law last week after it received unanimous support from each of Washington’s eight representatives in Congress.
“I am honoured to join in paying tribute to rock and roll icon and Seattle native Jimi Hendrix with the renaming of the Renton Highlands Post Office as the James Marshall ‘Jimi’ Hendrix Post Office Building,” Representative Smith said in a statement.
“This designation will further celebrate Hendrix’s deep connection to the Puget Sound region and help ensure that his creative legacy will be remembered by our community and inspire future generations.”
The 2.5-acre Jimi Hendrix Park was opened in Seattle’s Central District close to the guitarist’s childhood home in June 2017.
