Sean Rubio rushed for 102 yards, Dylan Gonzalez scored three touchdowns and Lake Mary’s stingy defense held host Lake Brantley to just 49 yards in a 42-0 Class 8A, District 4 victory Friday night.
Lake Mary (2-1, 1-0 Class 8A, District 4) used a balanced offensive attack and a swarming defense to hand Lake Brantley (2-1, 0-1) one of its worst losses in school history. The Rams scored on three of their first four possessions to take a commanding 27-0 halftime lead.
The Rams then forced a running clock in the third quarter when sophomore quarterback Gunnar Smith threw a perfect 26-yard TD pass to Timothy Jarrells down the right sideline and then tossed a two-point pass to Gonzalez for a 35-0 lead with 10:12 left in the third quarter. Smith finished 10-of-16 for 129 yards and two touchdowns.
“It was a team effort for us: offense, defense, special teams,” Lake Mary coach Scott Perry said. “We came up big in all three areas. Defensively, we just had their number. Our kids played really hard. We were able to shut down what they do best. Offensively, we just made a lot of plays.”
Extra Points
The Rams wasted little time in establishing dominance. After forcing a three-and-out on the game’s opening series, Lake Mary marched 64 yards in nine plays to take a 7-0 lead. Rubio had runs of 20 and 21 yards behind a big offensive line and Gonzalez capped things with a 3-yard TD run.
Lake Brantley then turned the ball over on downs after a high punt snap forced a 10-yard loss. Five plays later, Gonzalez rammed it in from the 1-yard line for a 14-0 lead.
Rubio then went to work again later in the second quarter when he broke loose for runs of 7, 15, 9 and 6 yards to set up a 15-yard TD pass from Smith to Gonzalez, who split two defenders and powered into the end zone.
Lake Mary’s defense also got in on the scoring when Stone Boss picked off an errant pass at the Lake Brantley 11-yard line and scampered in untouched for a 27-0 lead with 1:09 left in the first half.
