The Link Between Autophagy and Ketone Synthesis

Autophagy is needed to initiate the ketone synthesis, at least in mice! ____________________________ Scientists in Japan 🇯🇵 published this recent report in animals to help figure out the relationship between autophagy and glucose and ketone synthesis. They found that when liver-specific autophagy genes were deleted from the mice 🐁, ketone levels were significantly reduced upon fasting compared to control mice. This suggested that autophagy genes, and their related protein products, are involved in ketone synthesis. It’s likely premature in humans to say that if you’re in nutritional ketosis, your autophagy genes are upregulated. However, we do have one human clinical trial in women to lean on; which found that regular exercise increased autophagy genes 🧬. Cool stuff, eh?
