Omar rakes in massive online fundraising haul amid controversies

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) has seen a surge of fundraising support amid attacks against her by Republicans and President Trump questioning her loyalty to the U.S. and accusing her of anti-Semitism.

In a Federal Election Commission filing released Monday, Omar’s campaign reported a massive haul of almost $827,000, reflecting a jump in individual contributions that eclipsed her total of approximately $41,000 from the last fundraising cycle.

{mosads}Omar’s office did not immediately return a request for comment from The Hill.

Politico noted that about half of her donations, $415,000, came from contributions under $200 while about $631,000 came from donors using the ActBlue online platform.

An analysis of other House members by the news outlet found that Omar’s fundraising totals eclipsed those of most incumbent members of Congress, including nearly every Democratic incumbent running in swing districts.

Omar’s district is considered safely Democratic, though recent controversies surrounding remarks viewed by Republicans as minimizing the 9/11 terrorist attacks and others considered by some members of both parties to be anti-Semitic have led to rumors of Democratic primary challenges.

Trump last week shared a video of the Muslim congresswoman interspersed with images of the 9/11 terrorist attacks with the text “we will never forget” displayed in the video. Democrats have demanded the video be taken down.

The freshman congresswoman has defended herself amid the controversies, vowing that no attacks would diminish her love for the U.S. or deter her criticism of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.

“I did not run for Congress to be silent. I did not run for Congress to sit on the sidelines. I ran because I believed it was time to restore moral clarity and courage to Congress. To fight and to defend our democracy,” Omar wrote on Twitter earlier this month.

“No one person – no matter how corrupt, inept, or vicious – can threaten my unwavering love for America. I stand undeterred to continue fighting for equal opportunity in our pursuit of happiness for all Americans,” she continued.
