Phoenix opens new, accessible light rail station as movement to kill rail program heats up

Wednesday was a day of celebration for many in Phoenix as the city unveiled the first light-rail project funded by a 2015 voter-approved transportation initiative. 

Local and national dignitaries gathered to unveil a new station at 50th and Washington streets, directly across the street from the Ability 360 campus, a 62,000-square-foot resource center for people with disabilities.

The new station, which will begin service Thursday, features accessible components that go “above and beyond” what is required under the Americans with Disabilities Act. 

“Today we put Phoenix on the map as the leader for accessibility,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said.
