Senator Adeyeye: 1999 Constitution Cannot Give Us Progress, Peace And Unity by joshuisiukwu: 3:08pm On Apr 11, 2019
Senator Olusola Adeyeye who spoke during the plenary session at the red chamber yesterday, stated that Nigeria's constitution of 1999 can never give us peace, progress and unity.The Osun born Senator who was reacting to the  persistent killings in Zamfara state, blamed the 1999 Constitution which according to him is responsible for the violence and crisis. Senator Adeyeye who in his speech stated that Nigeria's constitution can never give its citizens peace, said;

“The truth is whatever a man sows, so he will reap. The Constitution cannot give us peace and security. The official name of this country is the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but we do not operate under a true federalist system.”

He also took a swipe at his colleagues, who according to him do not have the spine to speak up about the evils projected by the 1999 constitution.“We failed to federalize the police system in this Senate because we lack the courage and tenacity to start what is making other nations work.”Every crime is local and the solution to every crime is local. We must revisit the revenue formula in order to ensure that we give more funding to the state”, he added.

Senator, go and change your house Constitution first.

As for State Police, have you imagined the Police being under the control of a State governor like Yahaya Bello, Chibuzom Wike, Ajimobi the Constituted Authority, Nasir El-Rufai, Rocha's Okoroawusa, Adams Oshiomole? In less than a month, Nigeria will be in flames.

Yahaya Bello would have directed his Police Commissioner to go and lock up anybody that bears Dino in Kogi State. Chibuzom Wike would have locked up all the people in Rotimi Amaechi's village. Ajimobi the Constituted Authority would have locked up all students of LAUTECH. After destroying Yinka Aiyefele's Radio House, Ajimobi would have also have gone to destroy Yinka Aiyefele's family house. By now, Adams Oshiomole would have locked up all PDP supporters in Edo State. As for Rocha's Okoroawusa, if you don't have APC membership card, then you cannot even walk on the streets of Imo. Tinubu the Jagaban too would have deported all Omo Yeebos back to Biafran land and dumped them at Upper Iweka.

The crisis of the First Republic started when the idiot called Ladoke Akintola who was the Premier of the Western Region started using the Region controlled police to harass and intimidate Awolowo's supporters. Many Awolowo's supporters and their properties were burnt alive by Akintola's thugs. That was where/when the slang "wetie" came about meaning "wet him/her with petrol and burn him/her". The aftermath effect of the crisis consumed the traitor Ladoke Akintola and ultimately lead to the end of the First Republic.

I support community policing and not police controlled by State or Local Governments.

This man is saying the obvious. I’ve always known the Prof to be Intelligent and Articulate whenever he’s making a speech at the Senate. The present constitution is a disaster and I’m glad someone is speaking out. Unfortunately he’s been part of the National Assembly for years and I guess hes saying this now because he won’t be going back to the National Assembly after May. He should speak out more and we Nigerians should stir up discussions that will lift the mind of our people to demand for a better Constitution.

They will be greater changes in this country if we decide to set religion aside and work for national growth, in justice and fairness.

Pls note: They're many places in the north where you can't sell alcohol. Just saying. I stand for Independent Regional government.

Parts of Our present problem in Nigeria today is Religion, Tribalism, NAS $ Illiteracy in the North and unfortunately we have a directionless presidency that has no vision nor agender for the growth of the nation.

Imagine a debate for 2023 is already on going where by the present mandate has nothing meaningful to show for it.
Every one knows that Nigerian economy is not moving forward but yet keep quite.
Nigeria has recently became a mockery to most African nations.

""OF all Decrees enacted in Nigeria, none is more controversial than Decree No 34 of 1966. It was promulgated on May 24, 1966 by then Head of State Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi Ironsi(1924-1966). It was called Unification Decree while some critics at that time labelled it De-unification Decree. It was the Decree that started the death of Regionalism-an issue which is still generating controversy presently. Although then Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, repealed Decree 34 on August 31, 1966 through Decree 9, a large portion of the Decree is still effective till date.

General Gowon further compounded it by promulgating Decree 14 of 1967 which broke Nigeria into twelve states and provided for Military Governors for each state. With Decrees 34, 8 and 14 regionalism was finally buried. On assumption to power, General Ironsi promulgated the Constitution (Suspension and Modification) Decree 1966. Decree No 1 dated January 17, 1966 but not published in the Official Gazette until March 4, 1966. He then issued public order Decree No 33 dated May 24, 1966 which dissolved eighty-one political associations and twenty-six tribal and cultural associations.

At the early stage of his tenure, he appointed a three-man advisory team made up of Chief Francis Nwokedi, a Permanent Secretary, Dr. Pius Charles Nwabafor Okigbo (1924-2000) and Colonel Patrick Anwunah, who later became Chairman and Head of the Orientation Committee at that time. He replaced the then Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Taslim Olawale Elias (1914-1991) with Chief Gabriel Chike Michael Onyiuke (SAN), former Director, Public Prosecution, Eastern Nigeria (1960-1965) who is from Nimo in present Anambra State.

In a speech to the nation on January 28, 1966, he denounced the ills of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa regime and outlined necessary reforms. “All Nigerians”, he declared,” want an end to regionalism. Tribal loyalties and activities which promote tribal consciousness and sectional interests must give way to the urgent task of national reconstruction. The Federal Military Government will preserve Nigeria as one strong nation.” He then went on to promise “administrative reforms” and referred specifically to several matters in which regional as well as personal interests were known to have had decisive influence. These were official appointments, public investments, and the universities.""

A constitution supervised by soldiers from northern Nigeria, soldiers hiding AK 47 rifle while dishing out orders to the drafters of the constitution on what should be, or not be included, in the constitution, a constitution imposed upon Nigerians without any REFERENDUM...

Nigeria's 1999 Constitution, as amended, is a joke taken too far.

I will support anything except for state policing, it will be a great mistake for Nigeria to adopt state policing , Nigerian poilitcians are too petty and power drunk to have a tool like state police at their disposal.

There are other aras of the constitution that needs to be adjusted to fit our king of society as we have been imitating Britain for the best part of our democracy ,it just won't do,we are a perculia society and need the make laws that will be effective in our society.

This is the major problem of nigeria. Solving this problem will eliminate the remaining problems of nigeria.

But nigerians are fools. They think the solution to their problems is voting in and voting out politicians. Forgetting that the foundation is faulty.

As much as I would want to agree with you, you fail to talk about the positives of State policing as regards the general security of the people. I ask, are you satisfied with the spate of herdsmen or terrorists attack in some states while the governors watch helplessly? There is no good thing without side effects, and for Nigeria to ignore the importance of state policing is tantamount to lack of deep intellectual knowledge of how a system works. shocked

True federalism necessitates state police, or regional police, for states that shall agree to congregate as region.

Boko Haram and so-called Bandits violence could have been a thing of the past if northern soldiers and police who understand the language of Boko boys/Bandits, and what they truly want, are up against Boko Haram.

Boko Haram wants a country to be governed with Islamic Sharia criminal justice system. It's the same unconstitutional Sharia criminal justice system adopted by twelve northern Nigeria's states beginning 1999, as a veiled protest against the emergence of the "unbeliever" Obasanjo, as president.

No amount of federal police or armed forces can defeat Boko Haram/Bandits.

Governing Nigeria under the present quasi unitary governance system is like postponing the EVIL DAY for all in Nigeria.

Leave the confines of Nigeria first and come back, so that you can't be pouring out this type of your retrogressive suggestions on the public space.

Is your Community Police you suggested and beat your chest immune to abuse by whoever wants to use them?
