Blonde, waifish actress Peggy Lipton, known for her role as Julie Barnes on the counterculture-absorbed The Mod Squad, has died.
She was 72, and the cause — according to family members — was colon cancer, which she had first battle in 2004.
Lipton, first at teen model, made her TV debut on Bewitched (1965), and went on to appear on such period shows as Mr. Novak (1965), The Alfred Hitchcock Hour (1965), The John Forsythe Show (1965), The Virginian (1966), The F.B.I. (1967), and the Willie and the Yank installments of The Magical World of Disney (1967).
She became an overnight star on The Mod Squad (1968-1973), epitomizing the late-hippie era and emboding a character unlike any previously seen on TV. For her efforts, she was rewarded with four Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe win.
During her run on the series, Lipton — who expressed discomfort with celebrity — released several successful singles, including covers of "Stoney End" (1968), "Lu" (1970) and "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" (1970).
Upon her marriage to producer Quincy Jones (b. 1933) in 1974, Lipton put her career mostly on hold, though did appear in a Mod Squad reunion on TV in 1979 and in such movies as Purple People Eater (1988), I'm Gonna Get You Sucka (1988), True Identity (1991) and, more recently, A Dog's Purpose (2017).
Her other most famous role was that of Norma Jennings on Twin Peaks (1990-1991; 2017) and in the films Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) and Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces (2014).
Lipton is survived by her actress daughers, Kidada Jones (b. 1974) Rashida Jones (b. 1976).
