“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife,” stated Jane Austen. But does that truth hold when the man has squandered his good fortune? Sadly for William Sterling, his father’s wealth had become a distant memory thanks to William’s gambling habit. Sweet Patience Creighton is quite the opposite of William in both personality and background. In her book The Headmistress of Rosemere Sarah E. Ladd created a nearly tangible world for these two characters. While parts of the book were considerably cliche (much like the Austen quote I used above!) this was an entertaining read. I always know that I’ll enjoy a book when I can “hear” the characters reading their lines in my mind.

I found it interesting that the social and emotional issues that took place in The Headmistress of Rosemere are still valid points in today’s society. These were in stark contrast with the cultural norms of the period.  For example, women today don’t usually have a panic attack if a man brushes her arm.  I found Patience to be unfailingly kind when it came to forgiving her family of their wrongs toward her.  In my mind, she chided me for holding a grudge when her brother seemingly abandoned the family and her mother refused to acknowledge Patience’s efforts.  She was just too perfect.   As I read, though, I hoped Patience had a thing for the Bad Boy.  After all, can’t you just imagine the headmistress taking down her hair and tossing it around with a wind blowing her tresses?  I could almost hear the Def Leppard playing in the background!  Some parts of the books were just too orchestrated for me, but you’ll have to read the story to find out which ones!   The Headmistress of Rosemere wasn’t exactly a believable story but it was a sweet and clean romance that held my interest on a rainy winter day.
