In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on which team will finish last in the Western Conference.

Todd Cordell

The Los Angeles Kings.

I think Todd McLellan is doing a good job of maximizing the roster at hand. The Kings are actually out-shooting and out-chancing opponents at 5v5, which is surprising and impressive. Unfortunately, they don’t have the talent to capitalize on those positive differentials. They also trot out an absolutely washed Jonathan Quick and, well, it’s hard to win with some of the worst goaltending around each and every night. The Kings are in a rebuild, and will probably sell some useful pieces (like Tyler Toffoli) at the deadline, so I just don’t see them picking up too many wins this year.

Honorable mention goes to Chicago. They can’t play a lick of defense and Corey Crawford is not what he once was. If not for Robin Lehner, they could contend for most goals against.

James Tanner

The team that will finish last in the west is the Chicago Blackhawks. They currently have the worst possession numbers in the west, but are being held afloat by a nearly 94% save percentage. They are currently the third worst team in the west despite the 3rd best save percentage in the NHL. That is so awful it's almost hilarious. If you have such a high save percentage, you should be floating way above your station, and the fact that they aren't suggests a team with a lot of problems. They could challenge the Senators for last overall. That wouldn't be the worst thing for them either, as they already have Alex Debrincat, Dylan Strome and Kirby Dach. Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews might just end up back on one of the best teams in the NHL during their twilight years.
