SNP failing in pledge to build or revamp 750 nurseries as it’s revealed they’ve only managed to hit 97
Holyrood Childcare Minister Maree Todd revealed 13 new nurseries were built, 72 refitted and 12 extended
A NATS pledge to build or revamp 750 nurseries by 2021 has so far failed to reach 100.
Just 97 kid centres have been constructed, expanded or refurbished since August 2017 — 13 per cent of the target pledged by Nicola Sturgeon under the SNP’s promised free childcare hours boost.
But Conservatives claimed at the current rate Scotland would be 500 hubs short by 2021.
Tory MSP Rachael Hamilton said: “The SNP has made so little progress towards their own target on nursery capacity it is laughable. How on earth can they promise each child will have 1,140 hours of childcare next year?”
Revealing the figures, Holyrood Childcare Minister Maree Todd said 13 new nurseries were built, 72 refitted and 12 extended.
Ms Sturgeon’s flagship policy of increasing free childcare from 16 hours a week to 30 is due to start in 2020.
