Alberta Teachers’ Association president Mark Ramsankar will be the next leader of the national alliance of teacher organizations.
Ramsankar was elected Friday at the Canadian Teachers’ Federation annual general meeting in Montreal. The organization represents more than 241,000 elementary and secondary school teachers across the country.
Ramsankar is in his fifth term as a vice-president at the Canadian Teachers’ Federation and chairs an advisory committee on aboriginal education.
In June, the provincial NDP government announced a curriculum review. Ramsankar said there are gaps between the current curriculum and how students are tested. He advocated for the elimination of end-of-year provincial exams to instead assess students earlier in the year. He has also called for more student-teacher interaction time.
Ramsankar will take over his new role in July 2017 when current president Heather Smith ends her term. She was previously the president of the New Brunswick Teachers’ Association.
