PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS THE CHALLENGES FOR THE LEFT

This Friday August 12 on The Jordan Journal from 3-5 p.m. As the Presidential election heats up African-Americans, Latinos, and other progressive voters are challenged to engage in a real dialogue of what is the true meaning of these elections towards redirecting the right-wing surge in national politics. Does the Trump "boogeyman" view mandate all voters to vote for Hillary Clinton as the lesser of two evils? Is the Green Party candidacy of Jill Stein a viable third option? Perhaps more troubling is the structure of the electoral college for the Presidential election an illusion of democracy where the popular vote is insignificant and only swing states votes count? What should African Americans and Latinos do to make sure their votes are heard in November.? Howard will discuss this and more with Assemblyman Charles Barron. Please tune in.

In another segment is our democracy in trouble? Rupublicans have been rigging the game in their favor. Twenty two states have passed restrictions on voting. Ruthless gerrymandering has given the GOP a grip on congress. The Supreme Court has eviscerated campaign financing laws. Howard interviews Zachary Roth author of The Great Suppression: Voting Rights, Corporate Cash, and the Conservative Assault on Democracy. Mr. Roth is a reporter for MSNBC and his work has appeared in The Atlantic, New Republic, Slate, Salon, The Guardian, and the LA Times.

Who will replace State Senator Adriano Espaillat who in June won the Democratic congressional primary for congress? Today the Jordan Journal will interview one of the three candidates Marisol Alcantara. Alcantara is Democratic District leader in West Harlem She was born in the Dominican Republic and immigrated to the U.S. at 12 where she pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Government and Political Science from Manhattan College and went on to do graduate work in Urban Affairs at Queens College. Ms. Alcantara organized Latinos for the 2008 presidential election and worked as Campaign Manager to Elect City Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez. Marisol has also coordinated the SEIU’s Latino outreach efforts in Southern Florida. She currently works as a Union Organizer /Representative for the New York State Nurses Association and has also served as the national chapter coordinator for the Rev.
