The Royal Tree

The Ancient Burmese view teak as a Royal Tree, and history indicates, Thai Royalty consider teak to have royal qualities. Teak is considered to be one of the all time most valuable timbers, in both durability and water repellant, available today. Since the 17th century teak has been used in the marine industry. The Titanic's deck was made of teak and today is still well preserved underwater. Teak outdoor furniture designs came after the discovery of teak’s use in the marine industry. Teak was the hardwood of choice for many aircraft carriers, and other naval ships, up until the middle of the last century, when it was replaced with alloy steel. Teak wood when freshly milled has a pleasing leather quality smell. Teak known to be a very expensive timber was very popular at the turn of the century. The supply was up and demand was low for a short time between the naval use and personal use allow for prices to drop.

1. Investment You Can Enjoy For Many Years

Teak outdoor furniture is an investment that will last for many years. Much of the teak furniture in use today has been in use for many centuries. Teak outdoor furniture will never go out of style and is still considered to be sheik high end décor. With the rubber and oil contents of the timber, it is durable for all weather conditions, and can stand up to most climates better than any other wood. Teak is the hardwood of choice for any product that is exposed to water. It is not uncommon to find a teak cutting board, counter top, or floor. As teak plantations mature the end use of timber will grow.

How To Take Care Of Your Outdoor Teak Furniture

2. Low Maintenance

Teak outdoor furniture requires minimal care. Applying an oil to the wood is not recommended for outside use, however if you do have indoor teak furniture it is recommended to apply oil from time to time. Teak will naturally change from its golden blond to an ash gray. This is a natural process and does not affect the quality of the wood. Although it is not necessary, if you want to preserve the golden blond look longer, you can apply a wood sealer. This should be done on an annual basis. When surface scrapes or scratches occur, a simple sanding with medium sandpaper will repair the damage. If the scrape or scratch is deeper they to can be fixed. Outdoor Teak furniture should be washed with a mild soap and water, along with a little bit of bleach, and rinsed with fresh clean water. It is not recommended to use a power washer on the wood.

Teak Forest Plantation

3. Eco-Friendly

Teak hardwood wood is found in India & Myanmar in preserved condition for over 1000 years. It is considered eco-friendly because of its hardness and long time endurance. Basically teak is imperishable to the elements of nature. Although teak is linked to the destruction of the forest land in Burma, (most old timber is grown in Burma), most products made today come from controlled teak plantations. Indonesia is the largest exporter of teak timber from plantations and India has the oldest and most mature teak plantations. Studies have shown the timber from old teak trees and plantation grown trees are on par in all categories, including durability, oil, and natural element destruction, except UV exposure. Outdoor teak furniture is resistant to water, mildew and most wood eating insects. Termites do not dine on teak timber. Due to the overall lifespan of outdoor teak furniture it is considered an eco-friendly product.

4. Anti-Moisture

Teak is a dense extremely durable hardwood with high oil and wax content. It is the wood of choice for doorway, window, and ceiling beams in India. Most tropical countries have a large market for teak products due to its ability to stand high humidity climates. Because of the oil and wax content teak was first introduced into the market through the marine industry. Teak has been used in all aspects of boat making, from a canoe to the largest ocean liners of today. Along with being waterproof, teak will not turn black when it comes in contact with metal. Mold and mildew do not fester and grow on teak wood. If left to the elements teak wood does not diminish its composition over time.

Although outdoor Teak furniture is extremely comfortable, it is the natural feature of this wood to not absorb the outdoor temperature changes. Teak does not heat up throughout the day or cool down as the sun goes down. Unlike metal or other woods, teak outdoor furniture will not burn in the hot sun or be cold in the morning. The cruise ship business determined the price of teak was worth having this component. Money saved on not buying outdoor furniture covers or storage gained from not having to bring your furniture in out of the elements is always a great plus.
