Andy Murray won his second Olympic gold medal for tennis, which is pretty awesome. Equally awesome is how Murray didn't take more credit than he deserved.
John Inverdale was interviewing Murray following his defeat of Argentina's Juan Martín del Potro and said, "You're the first person ever to win two Olympic tennis gold medals. That's an extraordinary feat, isn't it?" And it is! It's just a feat that's, you know, already been accomplished. Twice. And Murray had the wherewithal to politely say so.
"Well, to defend the singles title... I think Venus and Serena [Williams] have won about four each but hadn’t defended a singles title before," Murray corrected. SNAP. It's no secret that the Williams sisters, despite being two of the world's greatest athletes, are regularly forced to deal with sexist bullshit from tennis media.
But it's not like Murray is going to deny his second medal isn't a big deal. It is. "I mean, it’s obviously not an easy thing to do," he said, smiling. "I had to fight unbelievably hard to get it tonight as well. Yeah, I'll enjoy this one."
