A police detective acquitted of a rape charge earlier this year has been reinstated as an officer with Shreveport Police Department.

Lloyd Thompson, chairman of the Municipal Fire & Police Civil Service Board, confirmed that James Greene has been reinstated to the police force.

Greene, who joined SPD in 2000, was arrested in February 2015 following allegations he sexually assaulted a woman in his office at police headquarters. Denying the rape allegation, Greene claimed he had consensual sex with his accuser. Greene’s trial, which began on Jan. 11 and culminated with jury deliberations two days later, ended with his acquittal on the charge of sexual assault.

Greene, a corporal and detective assigned to juvenile investigations, was initially placed on paid administrative leave. He was subsequently charged with abuse of office following the allegations and terminated from the department.

Thompson said Greene went before the civil service board Wednesday, saying his Civil Service Bill of Rights as a police officer was violated when the department failed to give him 30 days to find a lawyer.

The board supported Greene’s claims in a vote, which made the remainder of the case null and void, Thompson said.
