A Traveler’s Guide to Balinese Street Food

A Traveler’s Guide to Balinese Street Food BookThere are many places that I’d love to visit someday and Bali has always been one of them. From its beautiful scenery and beaches to its unique food and festivals, it’s definitely on the “bucket list.” Since a trip to Bali isn’t in the cards anytime soon, I’ll have to settle for daydreaming and cooking Balinese meals with my husband. We recently received the book, A Traveler’s Guide to Balinese Street Food, and we are not only enjoying planning our meals with the recipes in the book, but love the descriptions of Bali and its history when it comes to food.

David Barrett, who was introduced to Balinese culture by his grandparents, wrote A Traveler’s Guide to Balinese Street Food. He fell in love with the traditional curries and spices and has been traveling to Bail for over thirty years with his wife. This book reflects his passion that he wanted to share with other adventurers. The book was co-written by I. Wayan Budiasa, a Bali-Hindu culture guide who has escorted international tourists through Bali for many years

With each of the recipes, you’ll find some background on that food, such as with the Satay recipe, you’ll learn about the two types that you’d typically find on the streets of Bali. The authors really take you to Bali in the pages of this book with their wonderful descriptions. Other recipes you’ll find in this book are:

• Pisang Goreng (Fried banana godoh) – this is an Indonesian classic and favorite snack of the locals. I definitely want to make this!
• Spring Rolls (Lumpia) –these are tasty and look somewhat simple to make. They can be made with meat or without.
• Bakso (Meatball soup) – this dish is typically served on the street from a Bakso trolly. It sounds delicious with its blend of meat, vegetables and noodles. You can spice it up with chilli if you want.
• Coconut Ice Cream – you can make this with or without an ice cream maker. Either way, it anything coconut is something I want to try.

As I mentioned above, this book contains so much background on the culture and traditions, which I found very interesting and intriguing. I also really found it helpful that the authors provided descriptions of the ingredients (in the last section) in case you aren’t familiar with some of them. While I had heard of lemongrass, garlic and nutmeg, I needed a little education on kalpa muda, pandan leaf and kencur.

I have not tried these foods but would be interested in learning some of the recipes. They sound healthy and delicious.

  11. I was interested that Kristine noted that author David Barrett has been traveling to Bail for over thirty years. That would seem to me to make him well suited to introduce me to a cuisine that (truth be told) I know absolutely nothing about.

  12. It sounds like an interesting read. I love learning about foods all over the world.

  13. I like trying different ethnic foods and Balinese food is one I have very little familiarity with so it would be fun to read more about the culture and recipes. I like how much information Kristine gives about the book.

  14. I would love to win this cookbook because I love to try new foods and this one sounds really interesting. The thing that I really liked about Kristine’s review was that it was really well written and thorough. Boy that coconut ice cream sounds really amazing.

  15. A friend of mine spent a whole month in Bali last year traveling around with a friend and so I’m sure she’d like this book. I love the descriptions of some of the individual dishes…yum!

  16. I don’t know much about Bali and its culture including their local food, despite nutrition as my first profession. Kristine’s reminder that curries and spices are featured in most food, had me sold on reading more about their street food. Bonus that they give good food descriptions since I’m a newbie to them.
