And then there's Tate.
Tate is new to the fire station in Wildwood. Commitment phobic Tate has no problems getting "dates". But what Tate really enjoys at the moment is riling up Wren. He has this annoying shtick where he refers to Wren by bird names, any and all bird names but her own name "Wren". Despite that and Wren's brother's warnings Tate off Wren, these two just can't keep their eyes off each other.
So much potential has been simmering for two books now between these two.
I liked Wren's character. She's a great example of what it's like to be in your late 20's and not know what you want to do with the rest of your life. So typical! I was like her at that age, stuck, not getting anywhere with my career and not knowing if I wanted to stay in the town I was living in. Tate's character wasn't bad once he got past himself and realized what he wanted out of life.
What I didn't enjoy so much was how long it took for both Wren and Tate to get over their personal obstacles to be with each other. And even with some drama added in, it still took a while for a final, "phew, now they're together for realsies". It just took a lot of Tate annoying Wren before we got to any real romance between the two (truth be told, Tate annoyed me, too). But when some story arcs weren't resolved, that's when I really started chopping off stars. UGH.
The writing is classic solid Karen Erickson (∗cough∗ aka Monica Murphy). She's a fantastic writer, romance or otherwise. Usually I love all her stuff. For some reason though, this series has been hit or miss with me. I really hoped the heat simmering between Tate and Wren in the first two books would have boiled over in this book.
Unfortunately, Tate's new bird calling hobby got in the way.
