Sweetest Sorrow

Rate this book
Dante Galante has evaded death a few times in his life, but held captive in a sweltering basement, he's certain that death has finally caught up to him. Bloody and barely breathing, he tries to stay strong, but there's only so much a man can endure before darkness takes over.

As a critical care nurse, Gabriella Russo witnesses suffering often. Thick-skinned, forever cautious, she doesn't take her work home with her... until Dante Galante lands himself in her hospital. Recklessly grieving the sister he believes he'll never see again, Dante needs a friend. Just a friend. That's all it's supposed to be.

But life has other plans for them, just as it had for Matteo Barsanti and Genevieve Galante. Away from the chaos, building a life of their own, there's only one thing that could ever bring them back to New York: Dante.

Rules get broken and boundaries are crossed as the fight between rival families continues on, drawing them all deeper into a war they want far away from... for good reason.

'Sweetest Sorrow' is J.M. Darhower’s second installment in her 'Forbidden' series and like its predecessor, kept me at the edge of my seat the entire time. There’s no secret I love this author. I’ve read and enjoyed everything she’s written so far, every single one of her books being so intriguing and compelling. 'Sweetest Sorrow' definitely met all my expectations, even if, I expected the story to be more about the two main characters from the first installment in the series, Genna and Matty B.

"You are who you choose to be."

This second installment picks up from the exact moment where Genna and Matty are on the run and presumed dead. These two left their families and everything behind, to be together, to be happy and now, more than anything to stay alive. Now, that they found a secluded place, Genna and Matty only want to find peace.

“Some people were fueled by hope.

Others, like him, long ago realized there was no hope for the future. There was only the present until your luck ran out.”

Meanwhile, in NY, Dante Galante, Genna’s brother, is presumed dead…until someone finds him badly battered and barely breathing. Now he’s fighting for his life in a hospital. The Barsanti’s tortured him, Dante being so physically and emotionally drained. Gabriella is a critical care nurse who volunteers to take care of Dante when no one, since they know who Dante is, wants to. She’s a great nurse and genuinely a good girl and Dante figures it out as soon as he wakes-up. They become some sort of friends, but their friendship slowly changes into something more, something more than changes Dante and makes him want more for himself.

“His teeth nipped at her lips, his tongue mingling with hers, as he kissed her like she was the air in his lungs, the blood in his veins. He kissed her like he meant it. He kissed her like she'd never been kissed before.”

This second installment, like the previous one, was enthralling and addictive, filled with action, suspense and of course steam. I loved the mafia aspect, which was so fascinating and entertaining. The two families – Galante and Barsanti’s bosses were crazy as sh*t and they definitely kept me at the edge of my seat with some crazy action, interesting revelations and some intriguing tension. The plot was well developed and the two story-lines were pretty gripping and well done.

As always, J.M Darhower’s characters were entertaining and endearing. Both Dante and Gabriella were well portrayed and I liked them individually and together. To be honest, I was intrigued by Dante from the moment I met him in the previous installment. He was a character I sympathize with from the start. He was hardheaded and so stubborn at times, but caring and protective toward his sister and later as the story unfolded towards Gabriella as well.

“…other guys might break your heart once or twice, but mobsters? They'll break your heart every single night."

Gabriella was a great heroine. Her kindness and compassion made me like her from the start. I loved how independent she was and how she stood up for herself. With Dante, she was sweet, caring and protective as the story progressed, complementing him in a great way. I also loved that she accepted who Dante is, that she accepted him exactly like he is and of course the way she softened Dante. These two’s slow burn relationship was fantastically written, their interactions being so entertaining at times.

As always, the author’s secondary characters are fantastic to read about, my favorite one being Gavin, which I wouldn’t mind to have his own story.

Overall, this was a fantastic conclusion to this duet! Can’t wait to read more from this author!

“Being with you is the only part of my reality that makes any sense.” She smiled. “That's funny, because you're the part of mine that makes everything a mess.”

Well, shit.

There really isn't anything I can say on the plot, because well, anyone who follows me knows I am not a fan of giving too much of any book away and it would spoil this book and especially the first, By Any Other Name. And if you haven't read the first.....what the hell is wrong with you? Do you have any idea how much I loved that book? Do you have any idea how many times I had to re-read it just to get my fix of these characters while I not-so-patiently waited for this book to release? DO YOU??? Do you have any idea how many times I had to physically restrain myself from screaming while I read this? No? Well let me tell you.

I LOVE THIS BOOK AND BY ANY OTHER NAME AND THESE CHARACTERS AND JM DARHOWER AND GAVIN NEEDS HIS OWN BOOK AND IF WE DON'T GET IT SOMETHING BAD WILL HAPPEN WELL PROBABLY NOT I'LL JUST WEEP IN A CORNER BUT I LIKE REALLY NEED IT.

So. This is my review. This is all you're getting from me. READ THIS FREAKING SERIES. Not enough yet? Ok, fine fine. Look what you're missing:

Her back arched further, his free arm snaking beneath her, again pinning her hips in place against him as he slammed into her from behind.
"This what you wanted?"
"Oh God," she gasped. "Yes."
"Wrong," he growled, a harsh edge to that word that made Gabriella shiver. "If you can still talk, I'm not fucking you hard enough."

"The world tried to tear us apart in the worst way, but we didn't let it, and I know I'll never let it, because you are my world now. No matter what happens, I'll always be here for you. I'd follow you to the end of the Earth and back again, if I had to, if you needed me to, I wouldn't hesitate. I love you."

"You're practically aligned with the enemy now."
"Practically? I was aligned with the enemy the moment I felt what it was like to be inside of you. There was no coming back from that."
"What did it feel like? Being inside of me?"
He considered that. What did being inside of her feel like? Everything. It was Heaven. It was Hell. It was the most beautiful torture he'd ever felt.

DO YOU SEE?? All joking aside, I am utterly obsessed with these characters and and am IN LOVE with this story. I assume everyone knows of my undying love for JM's writing already. The humor, the romance, the heartache, this book and series had everything and then some.

"You are who you choose to be."

Sweetest Sorrow is the long awaited follow-up to By Any Other Name. J.M. Darhower never fails to amaze me with her intricate plots and unforgettable characters. At the conclusion of By Any Other Name, I was dying to find out what was going to happen next. Sweetest Sorrow certainly exceeded all my expectations. With more of Matty and Genna and the delicious addition of Dante and Gabriella, this was a truly spectacular read!

description

By Any Other Name ended with a bang and the star-crossed lovers are on the run. Their families are left behind, and the rumor on the street is that "Romeo and Juliet" are dead and gone. Genna and Matty find a secluded place to hide out so they can be together and protect themselves from their vengeful mobster families. When the dust settles, Genna and Matt discover peace and solace in each other's arms.
"I'm not letting go yet."
description

Meanwhile, back in NY, Dante, Genna's brother, is fighting for his life in the hospital. When none of the medical staff volunteers to be his caregiver Gabriella volunteers to be his nurse. Dante is completely broken, both physically and emotionally, after everything he has been forced to endure. After a difficult recovery, Dante begins to experience deep regret over the man he has become. He befriends Gabriella and suddenly the dark life of crime that he has been entrenched in doesn't seem quite so inviting. Despite his father's best effort to draw him back in, Dante begins to cling to the goodness he discovers in Gabriella. As Dante begins to walk away from his old life, secrets are revealed, and he is thrown from the flame straight back into the fire.
"You fix what's broken, not what's lost."
While the dual romantic elements of the plot are twisting and turning, the Mob families are still at war. The action is intense as the families fight to maintain control of their turf. Tensions are high for Dante and Gabriella to survive the storm. When Genna discovers the truth about her brother, her faith is shaken, and Matty once must again prove that she can trust him to care for her and give her unconditional love.

description

Told in dual POV, every single solitary moment of By Any Other Name held me captive. The complex characters and the relationships they shared were unique and riddled with passion and intensity. Ms. Darhower is a master at creating a world in which you want to escape to and stay forever. I am mesmerized by her ability to explore so many characters and plot points simultaneously with such commitment and ease! Not once was I in a hurry to leave a scene to get back to the other characters, I was simply happy to be along for the ride. I enjoyed every single sizzling and tender moment!

description

Overall, By Any Other Name is another winning read by the amazing Ms. Darhower. I became a fan when I read Sempre and I have never looked back! Her words and characters are simply unforgettable. I cannot wait to see what she creates next! My Kindle and I will be waiting!

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Type: Book 2 of Forbidden series
POV: Third Person
Rating:

Dante Galante was presumed dead when he went missing, until he was found badly battered and barely breathing. Having survived a torture changed him, which displeased some people. But he was tired of the never ending Family war and needed a friend to help him grieve.

Gabriella Russo was the nurse who mended him to health. What started as friendship slowly turned into something more as she helped him mend his heart as well. But she had secrets that could turn things complicated.

I was intrigued by Dante in book 1 and I'm glad he finally got his story.

"I like to think what defines a man aren't his circumstances or his mistakes. What defines him are his intentions, and mine have always been good."

Dante was hardheaded and hotheaded but those qualities what made him charming in his own special way. I love how he took responsibility of his sister and how protective he was. I also love how he injected himself into Gabriella's life.

Gabriella could stand on her own against Dante's stubbornness. She was tough and assertive, and won't let him trample over her.

"Gavin's a great name," Gavin said. "Means white hawk, which is perfect, you know. I'm white, kind of... Italian is white, right?"

My favorite character in this book is actually Gavin Amaro who had a significant role in the story. He was such an endearing character and I especially love his interactions with Dante.

"The world tried to tear us apart in the worst way, but we didn't let it, and I know I'll never let it, because you are my world now."

The story started a little slow for me in the beginning, but I'm glad it picked up by halfway. I like Genna and Marty and understand their significance in the storyline, but I feel their story overshadowed Dante and Gabriella's. There's also one big important question that needed answer at the end, so I'm hoping that means there's another book coming and I really hope it would be Gavin's.

"Parting is such sweet sorrow
That I shall say good night till it be morrow."

La historia empieza justo donde termino By any other name.

"I've spent almost my entire life wishing them dead because of what they did t0 my family. It made it easy to give in to anger, made it easy to go there, made it easy to pull the trigger."

description

"I let you stick it in and part of you just stayed there, and it's growing. It's, like, atached to me. And then it's going to come out and be this person we're responsible for. We'll have to feed it, and water it, and keep it alive, when we can barely keep ourselves alive."

J.M. Darhower, eres simplemente la mejor.

OH MY GODNESS!! I am speechless
Simplemente AMAZING!!

OHH YAAS GURL.🙆😆

Moretti aimed the AR-15 at Primo's face. "You just had to do this when I was here."
Primo stared at him, motionless. "This isn't your fight."
"You're wrong," Moretti said, "because I have a wife to go home to, and anything that tries to stop me from doing that becomes my fight

Ok I'm finally getting around to my review. As I stated, I'm not sure how to rate this. So I'll keep it at 4 stars it's anywhere between 3.75-4.00

On some aspect this was really good and I got excited. I mean I've been waiting forevvver for the continuation of Matty and Genna. I picked up the book and...

I felt as if I was in the Godfather
 photo image_zpsfidrkiqy.jpeg

But then it sort of just drops. It was as if I was waiting for shit to get real only to feel as if I just watched my son pick his nose.

The book picks up right where it left off. Genna and Matty are on the road escaping from home and Dante is given back to Primo then rushed to the hospital. While he's recovering he meets Nurse Russo. She becomes his one solid friend and really the only person he trust. However, Nurse Russo has her own secrets and she struggles with how she'll tell Dante. Oh the forbidden loves...
 photo image_zpsbgjrfon4.jpeg

It's hard to really get into the review without spoiling everything. We are introduced to more mob families and a ton of lies come to light. I hate both Primo Gallante and Roberto Barsanti. Ugh!
 photo image_zpsglhbzi7q.jpeg

Let's just say we had a lot of plot twists and crazy drama.

Dante is a mess. I understand he has a reason to be, but fuck man after awhile I got a little annoyed with him. Man up dude! Genna and Matty did their thing, I personally LOVED Matty the whole book but Genna, ugh! Genna, had her moments and I swear her reason to be there was so she can cry all time. Holy hell. I never got why Dante continued to hate Matty when he did nothing wrong! Gavin Amaro plays a big roll and I swear I love him! I really hope he gets his book or something else comes out because the ending had me confused. I mean ends and it's not a cliffhanger but there were a ton of questions not answered.

So I'll continue to wait some more. Hoping the next book comes out faster than this one.

" Take a breath, take it deep
Calm yourself, he says to me
If you play, you play the key
Take the gun, and count to three
I'm sweating now, I'm moving slow
No time to think, my turn to go

The first thing that pops in my head when thinking about this book is Russian Roulette. It was inevitable but predictable, because this book portraits our hero playing it from beginning to end.
I loved the first part. I was amazed how well a forbidden love could melt my heart but in the same time froze my blood because of all the tension and twist provided. Matty and Genna were the IT couple and I was kind of disappointed because I wanted more from them, wanted to explore more their relationship, now that there were free to love each other, and the end shattered all my wishes. UNTIL, I found out that there is a sequel.. PANIC,OMG and DANTE!!

"Sweetest Sorrow" pics up after the epic finale of the first book, but now our heroes Matty and Genna are secondary, leaving the main story to be written about Dante, Genna's older brother, who we know disappeared and was presumed dead. I was very sad when the Barsantis took Dante, and I truly believed he was dead, until reading the blurb and seeing it was not true!

Dante is alive, but not very well, not physically and emotionally. After being tortured and at the bridge of dying by Barsanti's hands, he is given another chance, but at a dearly cost. Severally injured, he is attended in a local hospital by nurse Gabriella Russo. She was the only one who wanted to take care of him, based on his reputation and the only one who was there for Dante during his struggle to stay alive. His wounds managed to heal, but inside he was empty and a time bomb ready to explode at any moment. Apart from this, Dante was devastated because of his sister's disappearance.

He was such a tormented soul and after this nearly death experience he began to question his reality and loyalty. He always lived being obedient to his father and his orders, but now he is not sure he wants to listen anymore. He begins a Russian roulette kind of life, being unpredictable and almost suicidal. He was breathing, but wasn't living. Who brought him back to life? Gabriella did.

She was kind, independent and a match for Dante. She wasn't intimidated by him, stood determined at everything she thought is was correct and wasn't afraid to speak her mind. She also protected the ones that she loved, that including Dante. As Dante, she didn't fit in the actual scenario, she was different, wanting something else, not a life traced by rules and others wishes.
They couldn't be more alike even if they wanted to.

Their relationship was beside the obvious attraction, a depth one, base of feelings and acceptance. She accepted him as Dante and he loved her for everything, including with a secret that you will discover while reading. Their love erased their past and family history, leaving only 2 people that have strong feelings for one another and were certain they want to be together.

Apart from our couple, we get to see Matty and Genna adapting to parenting and a new life, far from everyone. I loved them. With Matty everything seems to simple and it is so easy to just fall in love with him. He is willing to sacrifice everything to protect his baby and Genna, becoming an ideal father and lover. I appreciated Genna's efforts in being more sensitive and showing Matty how much he means to her. She really struggled with her past reputation and wanted to show him that the love they share is mutual and they are going to be a happy family, despite always looking behind if somebody wants to harm them. Their relationship clearly evolved, the bond now being indestructible.

I loved this book, our 2 couples and their adventurous road, the story was amazing and kept your attention peek all the time, not knowing what will happen next. Thank you Mrs. Darhower for the steamy scenes, they were hotter and sexier than in the first one and I connected with them deeply. And yes, Gavin! He was amazing as a secondary character, so funny, so serious when situation demanded it and his love/hate relationship with the Galante brothers was delicious. I really hope we will get to read his story as well, he is very interesting and intriguing, and I just hope he will find somebody to make him realize that love is worthy of breaking the rules.

4 stars for this series, all my respect for the writer and the way it managed to absorb me completely into this amazing story.

I'm rating this one 4 stars because I loved Dante and Gabriella's story. Dante is a 5 star worthy, hot mobster you can't help but fall in love with. Unlike Matty and Genna from book one, they had a lot of chemistry, and the sex scenes were hot. I also thought the mafia family storyline got much more interesting in this one, and it didn't hurt that Corrado from the Sempre series made an appearance! In the end, everything came together and it was really good. Much better than book 1, in my opinion.

The only problem with this book is that it had way too much Genna in it. Ugh, I had to power skim most of her scenes, because I didn't care. Her chapters were basically just keeping me from Dante. I didn't think it was possible, but she actually became more irritating in this book. I can't believe how much of a snoozefest her relationship with Matty was. They spent a lot of time eating and snooping around the safe house.

So, the issue is that this isn't a stand alone. You really have to read the first one in the series to know what's going on in this book. Dante was worth it for me!

5 Soul Saving Stars

Sweetest Sorrow is the second book in the Forbidden series by J.M. Darhower. I loved By Any Other Name, which is the first book in the series. I was beginning to think the author was never going to finish the series and then BAM what a happy surprise when I realized Sweetest Sorrow was released.

I didn’t have any expectations from this book. I will be honest and say I forgot what happened. But don’t worry after reading a few chapters, all the stuff comes back.

Sweetest Sorrow is a meaty book. I think my kindle told me it would take seven reading hours to finish. I was a bit intimidated by the estimation, but I was like, BRING IT. I really liked the length of the book in the end because I got so much out of the story. I felt like everything was needed and justified. Also the story has a sweet slow build up that just makes it more interesting and more addictive to read.

By Any Other Name is mostly Matteo and Gen’s story which I REALLY loved. We know at the end of the book they are on the run and surprise Gen is pregnant. You know I love a pregnant mama book, but what makes Sweetest Sorrow really yummy is that we get more of Dante and Gabriella’s story. Dante is Gen’s brother and they think each other is dead.

I liked that there were two storylines going on because it really added something to the book. Matteo and Gen are on the run, but I liked that their love is strong and it’s just them as a couple. I love how much Matteo loves Gen and how much he is willing to do for his pregnant mama. It’s super adorable and I gobbled up those pages.

I also liked Reading Dante and Gabriella’s story because it was different and new and Dante is SO tortured I really felt for him. He’s broken, beaten up and battered and Nurse Gabriella is there to help him find his way. I kind of liked the reversed damsel in distress storyline. I liked the whole book.

A lot goes on and there’s plenty of drama, crying, killing and fighting. I was engrossed with everything and I couldn’t put the book down, but I did many times because it was a seven hour read! Regardless it was a perfect read and I wouldn’t mind another spin-off, or some side story to extend the series. You never know. Fingers crossed for another happy surprise.

This was a great story and I'm a little sad that it ended. Is it weird that although I appreciated that this was Dante's tale, that I LOVED that I got more of sweet Matty? I love that guy. He's incredibly fierce, loyal, smart, protective and loving. Between him and Dante, I couldn't figure out who to love more.

both

I'm playing. I still choose Matty lol.

Ok, so Dante's story almost broke my heart. Everything he believed in was a lie. I really couldn't get over how evil Gallante and Barsanti were. Gone were sympathy and compassion. They no longer resembled the men they once were, much less the ones from friendship they once shared. All that was left was hatred and bloodlust and a never-ending battle to have the last say/shot/death. Poor Dante (and Matty and Genna) were simply caught in the crossfire.

I loved the slow build of Dante and Gabby's relationship. I'm a sucker for the friends-to-lovers trope and his brokenness only sweetened the deal. While I didn't like his damage, it came with humbleness and opened his heart, so at least it was worth it.

Fave parts:
1. The meeting of the Families (Corrado was sick! In a good way ;D)
2. Every stupid thing that came out of Genna's mouth. Girl was seriously an idiot but I loved it!
3. All of Matty. Every. Single. Thing. About. Him!
4. Gavin's endless taunting

"Did you just...?" Gabriella asked, looking back at him.
"Did I what?" he asked.
"Bequeath Genna with a G to Matty-B," Gavin chimed in.
Dante scoffed but didn't have a chance to respond before Genna groaned. "Bequeath Gavin? What am I, an inheritance?"
"I like to think of you more like a debt, personally," Gavin said. "Like that hospital bill we all know we have somewhere but nobody ever wants to pay, because it's a lot of damn money for something that ought to be free."

I wonder if this is it?! I would love more of Matty, Gavin and Dante. Gavin needs a woman!

Sweetest Sorrow is the long awaited sequel to By Any Other Name, and picks up from the exact moment where Genna & Matty are on the run and presumed dead.

Not only do we get more delicious interaction from the two characters I fell in love with BAON, but we also are blessed with a brand new love story involving big brother Dante and nurse Gabriella Russo, who took care of him when he ended up in ICU.

I really enjoyed this story, and as expected, the mafia aspects and family troubles were both enthralling and entertaining. I think my main disconnect was that it focused on both couples, whereas I feel like Genna & Matty's story should have been secondary to Dante and Gabby, rather than run parallel. I was so eager to keep reading their moments together, they made a fantastic couple, and the forbidden aspect made it all the more intriguing.

"...that other oath will always come first. Always
So other guys might break your heart once or twice, but mobsters?
They'll break your heart every single night."

Overall, it was a great conclusion to the story as a whole, but I would love for JM Darhower to write another book which gives us Gavin Amaro's happy ever after, he was a great secondary character.

Sweetest Sorrow is the sequel to By Any Other Name, and is told from multiple POV's

❝Being with you is the only part of my reality that makes any sense. ❞ She smiled.❝That's funny, because you're the part of mine that makes everything a mess.❞

Sweetest Sorrow was not what I expected. I expected a story about Matty B and Genna. While we are given their story, it is more of a side story to the main event, which is Dante and Gabriella.

Dante Barsanti is reeling from the loss of his sister, the murder he committed and the torture he endured. There isn't much worth living for, yet he can't seem to die. He has more lives than most, and none of them have been good.

❝It would've been nice, he thought, for just a moment, to have someone put him first. It would've been nice to have someone care about him... to have someone miss him.❞

It isn't until he meets Gabriella Russo that Dante begins to feel alive. They meet while Dante is recovering in the hospital. Gabriella is a nurse and the only one who cares for him without judgment. As she nurses his physical wounds, Dante begins to trust and rely on her. This doesn't come without problems, though. Because while she isn't a Barsanti she is still off limits.

Matteo Barsanti and Genevieve Galante are living the life THEY made for themselves. Adapting to society and their new living situation, the two have never been more in love. But like always, family has a way of messing with even the best laid plans.

I loved it! But then again, I've not read a book from this author that I didn't love. Her writing is engaging, entertaining and addictive. Her characters are brilliantly brought to life, whether they are the main character or supporting character, they are always thoroughly developed. Which leads the reader begging for more. And I want more of ... GAVIN!!!

I liked Dante and Gabby’s story. Liked them both a lot!
Amazing characters! My shelfing is for their story!
4.5 stars!

I wasn’t fond of the Matty and Genna’s storyline…
I skipped a lot.

Sue me, but 2 books in this series are full of plot holes. If any mafia organization did such horrible, partly TSTL mistakes, our world would be FREE of any crime!

So so so so good... And putting a fave character of mine in there with a cameo was a very nice touch!

Seriously I love mafia book and I think J.M. Darhower does an amazing job writing them. I did find myself laughing many times throughout the book but also nervous about what was to come. Gavin and Dante's friendship cracked me up. Love the direction the storyline went and I'm glad at the end Gabby basically said eff you to those douchebags.

I want Gavin to have a book now!!! Puhhhhhllllllleeeeeasssseee! I bet his book would be awesome. :)

If the Godfather and Romeo and Juliet had a love child, it's name would be Sweetest Sorrow. This book follows the forbidden love stories between the children of rival crime families in the aftermath of the explosive course of events that completely rocked their worlds in By Any Other Name. Sweetest Sorrow unfolds through two interconnected but parallel storylines that are paced so perfectly, woven together so seamlessly, I was completely consumed from start to finish.

No one does mafia romance like JM Darhower. No one. This series is the perfect blend of forbidden romance, revenge, edge-of-your-seat suspense, organized crime, familial strife and unpredictability. The way Darhower illustrates this world, her unparalleled storytelling, her way of creating these thoroughly fleshed out captivating characters, the magnificent way she juxtaposes sweet romance with brutal violence... it's unlike any other. It's addictive and pulse-pounding and I just can't get enough.

I went into Sweetest Sorrow assuming this would be a continuation of Matty and Genna's story, but as dual interconnected storylines unfolded, this book became less about Matty and Genna and more about Dante's quest for revenge. As one forbidden romance found some semblance of a happily ever after, albeit a bittersweet one, a second one is born. Despite Dante Galante's questionable health condition, he jumps head first into the organized crime war that he believes claimed the lives of his siblings and that left him near death. The only person he can trust, the only one that gives him an ounce of hope amid all that violence and death and tragedy is Gabriella Russo, the nurse that cared for him in the hospital... a nurse who may not be as removed from la cosa nostra as Dante thinks.

Dante is just delicious. It took me a while to warm up to him, but OH. MY. GOODNESS. once I did, he owned me. He's angry, rightfully so. He's hurting. He's a bit lost. But he's charming, and sexy, and funny, and even though he's a man of few words, the words he chooses are perfectly swoony and so damn effective. I loved Gabriella right from the start. She's a straight shooter, she's a protector, she's fierce but still vulnerable and feminine. I loved everything about her and I loved their dynamic, I loved who they were together. And above all else, I loved this storyline that JM Darhower so perfectly wove together for them. The push and pull, the terrifying yet sensual forbidden nature of their relationship, their unrelenting attraction, the smart banter between them, the secrets and lies of omission that sit quietly waiting to destroy them... I. JUST. LOVED. IT.

This book is everything a decadent, dangerous mafia romance was ever meant to be. Suspenseful. Sexy. Maddening. Romantic. Tragic. Sweet. Sorrowful. It's such a heavy, powerful storyline but it's peppered with unexpected moments of humor and tenderness. All these things swathed together by JM Darhower's lush writing style and captivating, gritty storytelling puts Sweetest Sorrow up there with Sempre and Made as a favorite from this author. I didn't want this book to end and I can only hope the author brings us back into this horrifyingly beautiful world again.

I loved book 1, because of the MCs. Genna and Matty were absolutely wonderful. The cliffhanger was brutal but I was patiently and happily awaiting the sequel even if it took almost a year and half!
Disappointed photo: Hercules tumblr_m4eur3KACI1qzuqe9_zps24c96f5b.gif
So, Sweetest Sorrow took a different turn than I expected. Whereas book 1 was told in third person dual POV (Genna and Matty), this one was multiple POVs. In this one a new couple is introduced, Dante and Gabriella. And even if I absolutely adored this couple, I didn't wait so long to NOT get my Genna/Matty fix! They share 50% of the spotlight with this other couple and sometimes I felt like they were secondary characters and not the MCs. Again, Dante and Gabby are perfect as a couple, but I would have rather they had their own book. Like, the 3rd book could have been theirs.

Because of this I found myself skimming throughout parts of the book and in the end I lost a bit of interest. Sad, because book 1 was a definite 5-star read. This one can only scrape a 3.5 at its highest.

3.5 -Patting myself on the back for finishing- Stars

After a 20 long, long days of reading this... she finally finishes the book, folks!
description

Warning: unhelpful and possibly time wasting review up ahead.

I LOVED book #1, so maybe my expectations going into this book was too high to reach.
No, I didn't skim. Every word was interesting enough to keep me reading till the end. All the characters were likeable and not annoying (at least to a certain degree). There was enough steam that kept me happy. Every word was well written. The storyline wasn't far-fetched or ridiculous. Even I am flabbergasted at myself for the absurd amount of time it took me to read this book!

Even though there was nothing wrong or bad about this story, there was also nothing compelling or page turning about it either. My mind was always wandering while reading this book, finding myself distracted by my kids cute faces... And looking at bathroom renovations on Pinterest... And the occasional game of solitaire... And reading interesting reviews on GR... and well, you get the picture...

BUT, it certainly says something if I didn't feel the need to DNF, or skim, or pick up another book. It says that this book was good, but not great - for me.

I didn't really mind the merging of the 2 couples stories in one book, as it broke up some of the monotony I was already feeling. But alas, even my beloved Matty-B from book #1 couldn't keep me from getting distracted by the awesomeness of Pinterest renovations :(

So, I leave you all with yet another useless review and ramblings of a tired, crazy woman who took too long to read one book. Don't let my bi-polar thoughts dissuade you from reading this one - especially if you loved book #1.

Told in multiple 3rd person POV and must be read after By Any Other Name. We get a nice epilogue/HFN at the end, but no extended HEA. I was just so happy to finally finish this book that I wasn't bothered by the lack of HEA, like I normally would be.

***** 5 "Truth Will Set You Free Stars"

Book 2 in the Forbidden Series and this book will have you turning pages anticipating what's come from the beginning.

This books takes off where book 1 ends and the majority of the story is about Genna's brother Dante and how his life is shattered after being abducted, tortured and left for dead. Dante has the battle of his life to come back and avenge the wrongs of his father and the short life of his beloved sister Genna.

 photo dante_zpssrpgnexb.jpg

Everything Dante is and touches seems to crumble and leave. He knows his reputation will be with him forever but when love seeps into a fracture piece of his heart, Dante learns life is more than what you have always been taught to believe.

 photo GABBY_zpsjhlf1yei.jpg

Gabby knows the life that Dante was raised to honor. She had the same life but chose to be neutral and judge people by their true intentions. Not the hate of a father.

With love comes secrets that Gabby is hiding because she knows both of their lives were never destine to cross. What she wants and what she feels must overcome the darkness and hate the Dante was raised to fight.

 photo sorrow_zps3svrvlts.jpg

Blood will be spilled, tears will be splashed, hearts will be twisted and lives will be saved and ended. BUT truths will finally be exposed and lives just may move on.

ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK AND SERIES!!
Not only this action packed and filled with explosive secrets and truths, but Miss Darhower gives us some nice surprises that had my heart smiling big.

4.5 STARS

Well then. That was quite an end. And it was a pretty good one. I really enjoyed Sweetest Sorrow. Oh and I especially enjoyed the craziness that ensued around 80/85 percent into the story.

I guess it was really the only way to solve the war between the Barsanti's and Galante's. There was way too much hatred between both men and I couldn't see it going any other way.

Hm... Once I finished this last night I kept asking myself what exactly created this whole war business? How did it start? Why did it start? And I sat there staring into space trying to remember anything regarding how it started. So this is what I've gathered so far:

- Roberto invited the Galante's to Matty's birthday party but they didn't show up... instead a shooting went down.
- So basically Primo set up the shooting. That's when this all started.
- BUT WHY?! Was it for power? greed? what made Primo turn? I WANT ANSWERS! My mind will forever think of reasons as to why Primo turned his back on Roberto.
- And then Roberto set up the car bomb that killed Joey. And i guess it escalated from there.

If anyone has any answers for me please let me know! Am I missing something? Or am I not thinking hard enough or?? I don't know!

I actually really hated Primo. Yes I hated Roberto also. But Primo - I had extra hatred for Primo. And maybe because both his children expressed their hatred from him throughout the book. And through their eyes my hatred for Primo grew.

What I loved about the story most was Dante and Genna's love for each other. It was so admirable how much love the siblings had for each other. And Dante. I loved him! After what he went through I knew he wouldn't return the same. And it was painful reading about his struggle. He was emotionally so disconnected with everything. And His father is a bastard so that didn't help matters either. Dante started seeing every thing in a different light. And then Gabby was there for him when he needed a friend.

And Matty. I loveeeed him! The guy was such a sweetheart. It truly showed how much he loved Genna and what he's willing to do for her in this book. Genna was great but I didn't feel as connected to her character in this book than the previous one. She was hilarious though.

And one more honorable mention: GAVIN AMARO!! I think he was my favourite. This guy was a gem. I loved everything about him. He was the more laid back guy, didn't get involved in useless shit. He was just such a nice guy with a bit of badassery. And he was friends with everyone! The Brazzi and Amaro family were my favourites to be honest. That's how a family should be. (Well a mafia family anyway)

Anyway........ that's a lot to words up there. All in all I really really enjoyed this! I still have a few questions and some curiosities that I wished were answered but I'll let my imagination do the work.

Review by Lisa Kane

I have waited forever for Genna and Matty's story to continue. When BAON ended, the couple had just escaped death and were on the run. Dante was barely alive and we had no idea what would happen to him. It looked like maybe both rival families, having lost so much would stop their war?

I loved this book! Dante and Gabby are the yin and yang to each other's soul. Genna and Matty are trying to make a new life for themselves, Genna still thinks Dante is dead and Dante still has no idea what happened to her. Both are trying to keep their heads above water. I thought I couldn't hate their father anymore than I did in the first book, but nope..he is worst then ever. The secrets about the things he has done will turn your stomach.

There is so much intrigue behind the smoke and mirrors-my head was reeling! Which families will turn on each other? How self destructive can Dante get? How long can Genna and Matty live a life of hiding out?

Sweetest Sorrow holds itself up on its merits. A good part of this book is Dante's story and there is so much more to him than the monster his family has tried to make of him. There are heartbreakingly lonely moments to his story and so much insight into why he is the way he is. I didn't mind sharing my Genna and Matty moments with him.

Best part-lots of Corrado Moretti!!

My only regret-poor Gavin. This guy has been begging for his own story since the days he befriended Haven while she was separated from Carmine. He still has the kitten she gave him-when will he get his HEA?
