This story from Dallas Cowboys training camp involving rookie quarterback Dak Prescott and All-Pro wide receiver Dez Bryant shocked us!

Dallas Cowboys rookie quarterback Dak Prescott has been the talk of the NFL over the first three weeks of the preseason. Now that it’s been revealed that Cowboys starting quarterback Tony Romo is expected to miss significant time this year due to a back injury, Prescott has suddenly been thrust into the starting lineup. An now the 23-year old rookie will be tasked with leading America’s Team into the regular season.

The biggest question in Cowboys Nation is likely whether the fourth round pick out of Mississippi State can carry over his preseason success into games that actually count. Against what critics call questionable talent and vanilla schemes, Dak has looked special.

Completing 39 of his 50 passing attempts, Prescott has recorded 454 yards and five touchdowns through the air. He’s also rushed for 53 more yards and two scores on the ground in his first three preseason outings. According to former Cowboys vice president of player personnel, Gil Brandt, Prescott’s passer rating of 137.8 is the best by a rookie in nearly two decades.

So, the numbers say Prescott is ready to start under center for the Cowboys in the regular season. But is the rookie mentally ready to handle the riggers of being a starting quarterback in the NFL? And how will he mesh with the other, more established superstars on his own team?

Well, the young Prescott may have answered those very questions in training camp. As made clear in the below account by the MMQB.com’s Peter King, Dak demonstrated his unique ability to lead and instruct very early on.

"“In an 11-on-11 period late in practice, the offense had 10 seconds left to score, and Prescott was the quarterback with the first unit. He passed to Dez Bryant, and Bryant was supposed to out of bounds immediately so the clock would stop or go to the ground so the offense could call a timeout. But Bryant tried to score instead, was stopped, and the clock ran out. Prescott ran to him and said words to this effect: We know you’re the best receiver in the world and you MIGHT score, but we can’t take that chance. You gotta use your head and get the clock stopped. That’s a rookie, talking to Dez Bryant. And Bryant, to his credit acknowledged Prescott was right. Prescott grew a lot in the eyes of the starting offense, and the coaches, that day.” – Peter King, MMQB.com"

And that was before Prescott was thrust into the national spotlight after his preseason performances! Coming out of college, CBS Sports analyst and DallasCowboys.com Draft Show’s co-host Dane Brugler claimed Dak’s best NFL traits were his poise, veteran presence and leadership skills, coaching up and instructing teammates (per his 2016 NFL Draft Guide).

Prescott demonstrated those exact qualities in training camp. It appears if there is one area that Dak is fully prepared to handle the reins of an NFL franchise, it’s as a leader.
