Poroshenko urges UN General Assembly not to recognize legitimacy of Russian Duma elections in Crimea

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has called on the UN General Assembly not to recognize the legitimacy of the Russian State Duma elections in Crimea.

"We also urge you not to recognize the legitimacy of the Russian elections, which were held a few days ago in the occupied Crimea," he said at the 71st session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.

"If you do recognize them this will play into the hands of the aggressor and encourage further repressions," he said.

As Interfax-Ukraine reported earlier, Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada on Tuesday declared the elections to the Russian State Duma and its newly elected composition illegitimate due to the fact that the voting was also held in the temporarily occupied Crimea.

A total of 264 lawmakers voted to pass a relevant statement at a plenary session.

In particular, given the fact of holding the illegitimate elections to the State Duma (lower house) of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on the territory of Crimea and Sevastopol temporary occupied by Russia on September 18, 2016, Ukraine's parliament sees these elections as a breach of the law and the Constitution of Ukraine, the main principles and norms of international law, the UN Charter, the Budapest Memorandum, the UN resolution on Ukraine's territorial integrity, and other international legal acts, the parliament said in a statement.

In this statement, the Ukrainian parliament also urged the international community to act in a similar manner.

The European Union, Germany and Poland have already announced they do not recognize the Duma elections in occupied Crimea.
