We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Wye Life magazine is written, designed and printed in the Wye Valley for the people of the Vale of Usk and Wye Valley. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Wye Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. WELCOME

As a keen walker, for me, autumn is a truly special time. I love the changing colours as we head into autumn. One of the most enjoyable thing about publishing Wye Life is meeting new people and discovering the marvels of Monmouthshire, treasures of Herefordshire and south Powys’s hidden jewels collectively, we call them Wye Life’s hidden gems. This issue we have shone the Wye Life spotlight on Magor and Builth Wells. Many of you will have passed Magor while travelling along the M4 but this lovely little Monmouthshire village is well worth a visit. And while Magor is at the lower end of the Wye on the Caldicot Levels next to the Severn Estuary, Builth is almost the exact opposite, being close to the source of the beautiful river that lends our magazine its name. Builth has long been associated with The Royal Welsh Show (pop the Winter Show in your diary). It’s a great town and has many independent businesses, some of which are featured in this issue. There’s a distinct bridal theme in this issue too (check out our feature on following page). Autumn is a popular time for couples to either propose or get married so, if you’re in the mood for love, you’ll find lots of great businesses to help realise your dream wedding. I particularly want to mention our talented local photographers. so please think of them if you need images for your business or for a wedding or event.

Our winter issue will be out in the new year so, until then, have a lovely autumn and Christmas. As they say in Game Of Thrones, winter is coming. Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts Editor 07766 106701 jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk linkedin.com/in/jenniferhobbsroberts

Voted best in the West Midlands in the 2016 Wedding Industry Awards, family run Good Intents provides marquee hire and event organisation services throughout the UK. Wye Life chats with owners Bruce and Lucy Schofield at their Ledbury base…

GOOD INTENTS

Why Good Intents, and how did you get involved? We first met at Agricultural College; years later we both left agriculture to work for Lucy’s family marquee businesses, manufacturing and hiring marquees. These businesses were subsequently taken over, and in 2003 we decided to do our own thing. We knew of Good Intents, it had been going since 1985 but the owners were ready to retire. We bought the business and moved it from Droitwich to Ledbury, and grew from there.

days, graduations and open days, equestrian and rugby hospitality (not on the same site, I hasten to add!), and any other excuse for a jolly good party, or any requirement for a large white tent! Wow! And what makes your business stand out from other marquee companies? We are innovative, bespoke and certainly not the norm; we embrace peoples’ ideas and vision, and bring

their dreams to reality. We offer the personal touch; Lucy is mainly in the office pulling the strings, while I carry out site visits. We employ five full-time staff, and several more casual seasonal workers, although the season seems to be lengthening every year! We usually only run one site at a time, so that I can supervise, and I or a senior manager will usually be present on site during the event to ensure that everything runs smoothly. We have a variety of shapes and sizes of marquee, seating up to around 800 guests under one roof. Do you provide other services as well as marquee hire? Absolutely. We can be a one stop shop, providing flooring, lighting and electrics, interior décor, furniture, dance floors, posh loos, catering facilities, bars, chillout furniture, and mirrorballs! We also provide very effective heating solutions for our marquees, particularly in the winter months! We can source pretty much

What are your marquees used for? We’ve been involved with pretty much any kind of marquee hire that you can imagine. Weddings will doubtless always be our core business, but we also provide marquees for birthday parties (all ages!), anniversaries, charity balls, festivals, home and garden shows, corporate hospitality, product launches, Christmas parties, opera festivals, (bear with!), school and university speech 8

anything, and deliver it all with our own fleet of transport. We can recommend caterers, florists, bands and other suppliers who we have worked with. What areas do you cover, and how can our readers book your services? We can install our marquees anywhere in the UK (and beyond!), but most of our work is within 60 miles of Ledbury. We have recently supplied Llangoed Hall, Flanesford Priory, Eastnor Castle and Glewstone Court. In fact we’re supplying the marquee for the Wedding Showcase at Glewstone on Saturday

October 8th and we’ll be attending, so hopefully lots of people will pop along and say hello, we’re very friendly! Potential clients can request a quotation by phone or email. We produce 2d and 3d visuals of your marquee so that you can see exactly what you are getting. What are your plans for the future? We’ve already taken lots of bookings for 2017 and 2018. Our main aim is to grow organically, always improving and staying ahead of the pack, keeping our (Award Winning!) reputation for excellent customer service. 9

Established in 1999, Reds Hair Company is a five star destination salon that features high-end fixtures, equipment and products to offer high quality services in both hair and beauty therapy. With luxurious surroundings, friendly staff, and a consistently high standard of work, it is understandable why Director, Claire Winnall, is very proud of the path Reds is creating.

WELL RED The modern, yet classy surroundings, rarely found outside a city centre location has a large reception area which is the hub of this busy salon. This is complemented by a separate colouring room, cutting room, barbershop, sun shower, beauty rooms, and nail bar. After a thorough consultation with your technician and stylist your journey through the salon begins with a relaxing treatment in one of the state of the art massage backwash chairs. Moving into the cutting room you’ll be treated by one of the award-winning stylists, in fact, Reds boasts three World and European Champions between them, as well as many British titles. As a direct result of the reputation Reds has entered into competition work. Salon Director Linzi Weare is now the WorldSkills UK Team expert for hairdressing. A role which will see her lead her team to competitions in Sweden in December and AduDhabi next year. With over twenty staff members on hand, Reds has all bases covered when it comes to hair care, with specific stylists who specialise in precision cutting, long hair dressing and colour technicians. They offer varying price points, from Apprentice Stylists Cut and Finish at £18 to a cut and finish with a Director priced at £47

Their talented young barber Gavin not only does an amazing haircut for £12 but he also offers one year of unlimited haircuts for £120 for adults and £100 for under 16 years. That’s a smart idea. If their great value for money was not enough, clients get spoilt with complimentary drinks, including speciality coffees, teas, juices or even a cheeky glass of Prosecco. They even have a lunch menu of speciality sandwiches. The Long Hair specialists at Reds love to create beautiful bridal looks; a trial will enable the bride to try several options until the perfect look is achieved. Staff are confident whilst working with all ornamentation and added hair if necessary and take time to create the perfect look. When combined with the work of Head Therapist Michelle Sleeman or the award-winning beauty therapist Holly, who are specialists in make-up and create beautiful bespoke bridal make-up using Jane Iredale Skin Care Mineral Make-Up, the end result is truly breathtaking. Colouring is something that the Reds team specialise in, all of whom are capable and confident to create looks. Using the latest techniques. Senior Technician Hannah recently achieved. The coveted L'Oreal Colour Specialist Award with Distinction 11

Reds prides itself on the high standard of work and the commitment to training of all of the staff. By being a registered VTCT Training Centre it means that all the apprentices at Reds are trained in-house, ensuring that the quality and standards are maintained throughout the salon from Apprentice Stylists right through to the Directors. Beauty Therapy at Reds has expanded rapidly during recent years under the watchful eye of Michelle. Offering all aspects of beauty therapy, the treatments use the very best quality products available: Crystal Clear, Bio-Sculpture, Jane Iredale Make-up to name a few. The team have added Semi Permenant Make-up and Meso Therapy to the expending list of treatments which has proved very popular with clients and produced amazing results. Reds is certainly an impressive operation. Well worth a visit. Our front cover stars for autumn are Atelier Gilmar, the Goldsmiths of Monmouth. The question most asked of the goldsmiths, Gill and Alan Saunders, is “Where do you get your inspiration?” So this is the story behind their stunning new ring collection “Bella Luce”, which means Beautiful Light.

ATELIER GILMAR

This summer, Gill and Alan decided to go in search of inspiration for their new Autumn collections, and where better to go than Venice; a wonderful city brimming over with art and architecture. So in July they packed their panniers and cycled the “Venetian Way” to Venice via Innsbruck and the Italian Dolomites.

“Venice, a vision of light on water, has inspired us creatively.”

Venice is a truly original city, a vision of light reflecting on water, and it quickly became obvious that this effect, together with the unique architecture, was going to fuel the source of their creativity. While exploring the remarkable Venetian Palaces Gill and Alan discovered similarities in the way they construct their work and the way Venice was originally built. Their pieces, like great architecture, are created from the ground up with a good foundation of design and craftsmanship. So begins the idea. Bringing together the combination of 12

pure light reflecting the colours of pink Italian Marble, the seeds of the “Beautiful Light” (Bella Luce) ring collection were sown. Many of the items the Goldsmiths design and make are created in a similar fashion, beginning with a spark of an idea, which is often a fusion of input between themselves and their client producing a dream piece to suit every given occasion, whether it be engagement, wedding, birthday, or anniversary, or simply because it's the piece of jewellery they have always desired.

Atelier Gilmar 6 White Swan Court, Monmouth NP25 3NY 01600 715 454 info@ateliergilmar.com www.ateliergilmar.com

Working together, often sourcing a much sort-after gem (maybe a certain cut or type of gem stone) results in the perfect design- a true original. Aside from their collections, which are always available from their studio in Monmouth, they also offer a comprehensive re-model, restoration and repair service with all of the work carried out on the premises.

“Beautiful Light is a stunning collection.” 13

Mansel Davies Photography was established in 2001 after graduating with first class honours in Photographic Art from UWCN. Full of artistic idylls, he vowed that he wasn’t going out there to photograph weddings. After all “he was an artist!”

M ANSEL DAVIES PHOTOGRAPHY It took him a very short time to realise that artists need to eat and pay the rent. Within 3 months he had photographed his first wedding, enjoyed it, and since then he has been photographing a decent clutch of weddings each year. “I really enjoy photographing weddings, mingling with the guests, meeting some very interesting people, and just creating a natural and honest document of the day.” It sounds so simple.

Mansel feels that the digital world has on one hand made it easier for the enthusiast to take decent images, either with the phone or digital camera. After all if you keep taking photos eventually you’ll get a decent shot. On the other hand it’s made it harder to earn a living from photography, that’s for sure.

“I’m now competing with Uncle John and his 12 inch telephoto lens who’ll do it for a fraction of the price”. However, there is no substitute for experience and quality. I often speak to those who’ve cut corners with the important things… it’s easy to repent at leisure. Mansel brings a wealth of experience (over fifteen years) to the table. Photographing a wedding is not just about being able to operate a camera. It’s about knowing how to communicate, knowing how to get the best out of people; it’s about anticipation. Mansel says, "When you have many weddings under your belt, you achieve a sort of sixth sense of what’s going to happen in thirty seconds time and, consequently, you know where you need to be standing to get the shot. 16

“I once spoke to a chap who’d plucked up enough courage to photograph his first wedding. Poor chap didn’t sleep for a fortnight leading up to it. He managed to do a pretty decent job but vowed never to do another one because of the stress.” “I actually think it’s because I’m not a dedicated wedding photographer that I really love doing weddings. I don’t photograph 2 or 3 every weekend, and consequently don’t get fed up with doing the same thing again and again.” Mansel’s photography world is very varied. During the week he could be working with commercial clients, photographing newborn babies, capturing the happy family, restoring old damaged photos, or even giving a presentation to a school class – all under the umbrella of Mansel Davies Photography.

M A N S E L DAV I E S

Another string to my bow Whilst he has been singing songs since he was in school Mansel had only really thought of it as a weekend hobby until the last few years. Now he’s busier on the music scene than he’s ever been. He can be seen playing in pubs and clubs on the weekend, singing his heart out and playing his guitar. He has a very wide repertoire and so this can suit either a busy night down the boozer or a more gentle relaxed Sunday afternoon stroll through his songbook. He is often asked to perform at weddings, usually filling that gap between speeches and first dance, before the disco kicks in.

“The shape of my business has changed a lot since first opening the doors. It used to be mainly about my gallery, the selling of art, the selling of my photography. Yes, I still do sell my work but mostly online. However, watch this space…I’ve just decided to put together an exhibition piece hopefully for early 2017 and I shall be looking for a good space to show it over the next couple of months.” Mansel Davies Photography 0792 900 2197 www.manseldavies.com info@manseldavies.com

He also plays midweek gigs for the elderly, working with Musicare. Musicare place artists in residential homes on a weekly basis and music therapy proves to be such a boost to the morale, especially to people with alzheimers. He also sings and plays bass guitar in The Mystery Room, a three piece rhythm ’n’ blues band, this year celebrating their 30th year together. They’ve been best mates since the 80s and get together nine or ten times a year to blow away the cobwebs and make some noise. If you want to catch them this autumn they’ll be performing in the Forest of Dean in September, October and November and then in Usk in December. Get in touch for more info. 17

One of the joys of working on Wye Life is meeting new and interesting people with a story to tell. We met up Karen Rogers owner of Herefordshire Care Homes.

HEREFORDSHIRE

CARE HOMES GROUP

Herefordshire Care Homes is the culmination of a life long passion to make a Care Home a positive life choice for people and a great place to live. I spent my early career working for the NHS and social services as an inspector of care homes and working as a social worker so I’ve had first hand experience of poor care homes. I purchased my first home in 1999 and my passion has grown stronger ever since. There are now 6 homes in the Herefordshire Care Homes group, all of which have a great reputation. Charnwood Country Residence and Dulas Court have both been rated

as Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, and Coldwells House has been rated Outstanding in Caring.

on a very clear mission, which is to treat all people as we would treat the most loved person in our family.

I am so proud that this places us in the top 1 percent of care homes in the country and the vision I started with has not only become a reality, it is now a shared vision with a great team of dedicated people that I work alongside.

Our Care Homes provide a new and exciting model of care that is based on the belief that a care home should always be a great experience and a preferred option to living alone.

What makes Herefordshire Care Homes stand out There’s no great secret about what makes Herefordshire Care Homes group so different to other care homes, quite simply everything we do is based 30

People’s health will often improve living in a care home due to good nutrition and having company from new friendships, this reduces the loneliness, and isolation people often feel as they get older. People also have access to physiotherapy, which improves their mobility and promotes their independence.

Highwell House

How people spend their day in our homes is a priority, we don’t believe any other care homes offer the range of opportunities that we have on offer. We have won the national NAPA award for the last two years and we proud to employ a strong well trained team of activity staff across the group along with a team of volunteers. What strikes most of our new residents and their families is the overwhelming feeling of a new and positive chapter in peoples lives, making new friends, having new opportunities and having the support to retain contact with friends and family near and far. People frequently say they wish they had made

the decision to live in a care home much sooner. Whether you are looking for yourself or a loved one, you will always be welcome to visit any of our homes where you will see a new and positive approach to living well.

Coldwell House

Quirky café by day, and bespoke dining by night, owners Paul and Shelley Walker have relocated The Potting Shed from its previous home in Monmouth, to the village of Whitchurch, just a few miles away, where they serve breakfasts, lunches, afternoon teas and a full evening menu as well.

POTTING SHED

WHITCHURCH

The Potting Shed has been a well-loved venue for many a customer since 2014, when Paul and Shelley have seen their ‘hidden gem’ of a vintage garden café become ever more popular, prompting their move to bigger, warmer and more permanent premises. Having instantly fallen in love with the building (historically a 19th century library and coffee house, many years later home to the well-known Gallery Restaurant, and latterly offices) the couple set about changing the use, and The Potting Shed Whitchurch opened its doors on March 1st this year. Regulars will be delighted they’ve kept that magical, quirky laid-back feel, and too that they’re still serving the

same good honest home-cooked food that has become their own unique signature. Their new home is proving a perfect place for locals to dine, and is fast becoming popular with the myriad of tourists visiting the area, with easy disabled access and off-road customer parking. Professional Chef Paul cooks the meals fresh every day, and caters exceptionally well for any special diets, including gluten free, dairy free, vegetarians and just plain fussy eaters! because the menus can be adapted to suit your own dietary requirements, and you can order any special meals ahead of your visit. Produce is fresh and seasonal, sourced from local suppliers (within a 30 mile 32

radius) and Shelley, a professional gardener, always on hand for gardening advice, grows a range of fresh herbs and edible flowers for Paul to use in the kitchen too. Their innovative menus are based on good value Anglo-French dining, and are changed monthly. Alongside lunch and evening dining, their cooked breakfasts are legendary, as are their traditional ‘home from home’ traditional Sunday lunches and afternoon teas. This is a great place to meet friends for lunch, to stop off for refreshments if you’ve been walking, cycling (with or without your dog!) motorbiking, or taking your classic car out for a weekend spin. And don’t worry too much about muddy boots, paws or spokes, as all are equally welcomed

in the right place! They even have free Wi-Fi for those who like to stay connected. If you’re planning a special event you’ll be delighted to hear that the restaurant can seat up to 35 people, and is available for private parties including small wedding receptions, christenings, birthdays, office parties, and more. It’s the perfect venue for your special occasion and offers a unique dining experience whether cosy and relaxed with a crackling log fire during the colder months, or a pretty and beautifullyscented al fresco dining experience outdoors in the summer. From December 1st there will be Festive special menus available for lunch and

dinner, and because this popular café/restaurant is limited by space, it is always advisable to book as far ahead as possible. Follow us on Facebook for news of our exciting new menus, Homemade Preserves, Gift Vouchers and seasonal garden plants for sale, and you can contact Shelley to chat about your booking, reserve your table or book your special event at The Potting Shed Whitchurch on 01600 892 830. Set in a stunning location on the banks of the river Usk, The Chainbridge Inn reopened its doors in June this year under the ownership of renowned Executive Chef Charles Rouse and his wife Uta. Wye Life chats with Charles as he prepares to launch his new three course lunch menu and autumn a la carte menu plus Saturday morning brunches…

Courtesy of Mansel Davies Photography

CHAINBRIDGE

Firstly Charles, what made you want to be a Chef and what’s your background? I was influenced by watching my grandfather cooking in our family restaurant when I was younger. I started in the catering trade at 14 years old as a Kitchen Porter, then went on to train as a Chef and qualified whilst I was 3rd Chef in a 3 AA rosette hotel. I went on to become Head Chef by the time I was 21, getting head hunted for a role in a 3 rosette hotel as Head Chef where I held the rosettes for 3 years. And what brought you to the Chainbridge? Uta and I have our own exclusive chef at home company, Rouse Rengert Cuisine, and we both felt the time was right to open our own restaurant. The opportunity came up to

purchase the Chainbridge and we’re thrilled to be here. What food can we enjoy on your menu this autumn and is it sourced locally? Our ethos is high quality, seasonal food, sourcing our ingredients locally wherever possible. For example “chicken of the forest” is a mushroom which I foraged from one of the trees in our back garden, it’s important to know what nature holds locally and to have the knowledge of using these products. Our menus for autumn and winter will be dedicated to our local black Welsh beef, game and fish dishes such as beetroot and red wine poached halibut – plus plenty of hearty vegetarian and vegan options as usual. 36

You’re clearly a very popular destination venue – why do you think this is? Our customers get excellent quality food at great value for money prices, in a stunning location right on River Usk and with great customer service. And what do you have planned for the forthcoming festive season? We’re already taking bookings for our Christmas menu which is lavish and decadent. Also for those wishing to learn how to cook a 3 course Christmas lunch for their loved ones, we’ll be offering cookery lessons here from October. For the first taster of what’s to come check us out at the Monmouthshire Food Festival.

How do you manage your work/life balance? I like to to keep fit with exercise and endurance races, which I had to put on hold this year due to opening our business and the arrival of our daughter Kayla-Sophia this year.

Opening hours Tues - Sat 11am - 11pm Sunday & Monday closed Lunch 12:00pm – 3.00pm Dinner 6:30pm to 9.00pm Saturday Breakfast/Brunch 8.30am – 11.00am

3D Lipo Med Brilliant for inch loss, and smoothing out lumps and bumps ready for your little black dress. Our medical specific 3D Lipo machine offers a combination of 4 technologies. One of these being the Ultrasonic Cavitation, which is the perfect treatment for women who want to contour their body and regain their confidence. Most clients see an immediate change in their appearance after the first session, with optimum results after 2 to 5 sessions. While this is a non-surgical way to sculpt and contour your body, this is not a replacement for a healthy diet and regular exercise. Skin rejuvenation – Chemical Peels Now the burning summer UVB rays have reduced, this is the best time of year to have a chemical peel to help rapidly resurface and rejuvenate the skin's texture and tone. A chemical peel combined with Alpha Hydroxy Acid skin care is the perfect combination to encourage the skin's natural cell renewal cycle, actively smoothing and refining whilst gently exfoliating away any dead skin cells which can dull the complexion. Relaxing ELEMIS Facials Even though during the winter months we are less likely to expose our bodies, it's important that we take time to look after ourselves and kick start those energy levels as the body does battle with environmental pollutants and toxins that can cause skin to look tired and dull. Even the minerals in tap water can play havoc with the skin by drying it out - when all you’ve done is taken a shower, so a few small changes to your beauty care routine and diet is all you need to make a noticeable difference. Skin care As the weather changes, and we move between the cold outdoors to inside central heating, then so does our skin's needs. We offer a skin consultation to help you find the most decadent textures and aromas in our ELEMIS skin care, or the most targeted prescription grade skin care with our NEOSTRATA range. Whatever you need, we'll find the best products to suit your skin type and lifestyle.

The Robinson family relocated their dairy, sheep and arable business to the beautiful Grosmont Wood Farm in February 2014.

GROSMONT WOOD FARM On arrival in Monmouthshire, Robert and Emma realised that they finally had the space, facilities and stunning location to develop a quality horse retirement and rehabilitation livery service as well as continue milking their herd of pedigree Holsteins and lamb their flock of North Country mules. Wye Life chats with husband and wife Robert and Emma Robinson… What led you to setting up your horse retreat? As a farming business we’ve always diversified to bring in another income; when we moved into Grosmont Wood Farm we realised the equine potential. We had a few DIY liveries, but decided we wanted to offer retirement and rehabilitation; a small bespoke service

offering the horses a tranquil and peaceful home to live out the rest of their days. We set up our website Grosmont Wood Horse Retreat and launched this in February 2015; our first horse, Lurch, arrived in April of that year. What services do you offer for the horses? We provide a full retirement and rehabilitation service for each horse, which includes its own stable, grazing, and feed that’s recommended by its owner. In the summer time the horses are turned out at night and come inside during the day. During the winter months they are out in the day and in at night. We have an indoor and outdoor school, so when it’s very wet they have the luxury of keeping warm and dry. 42

This also helps us preserve the grazing so we have plenty of grass all year round. Each horse is individual with its needs, and at times they all require extra attention and care; we work with Abbey Equine Clinic and Nigel Brown Master farrier to ensure all of their welfare needs are met. The farm is a stimulating place for the horses to live, there’s always plenty of farmyard activity; the horses paddocks adjoin the fields where cows, young stock and sheep graze. We encourage the horses’ owners to come and visit and take in the wonderful views on the farm. What else do you have going on here? We milk about 80 pedigree Holsteins; we are a closed herd which are TB free. We breed all of our own replacements and have cow families that are almost 100

years old. We also run a flock of 250 sheep that lamb in March/April. We farm 370 acres and feed grass silage, maize, peas, oats and wheat to our livestock, farming the land in a sustainable way.

We will soon be selling our milk online direct from farm gate to customer. We’re delighted to have been invited to Abergavenny Food Festival this year to engage with the public about food production, offering tasters of our delicious milk.

Where can our readers buy your milk? When the milk crisis hit the farm we decided to register to sell raw milk at the farm gate and farmers market. We are farm assured and tested regularly by the food standards agency.

Robert and Emma are happy to answer any questions about raw milk, or any aspect of their farm/ horse retreat, so please email them at grosmontwoodfarm@btconnect.com

First Milk have been paying us 15p per litre for our milk which is not sustainable - to cover the cost of production you need to be getting at least 26p per litre. We attend Grosmont Farmers Market on the second Saturday of every month. Our milk is also available at www.llanvifarm.co.uk

Magor - meaning ‘a wall’ - is a large village in Monmouthshire, South East Wales, between Chepstow and the city of Newport, and adjoining the Caldicot Levels, beside the Severn Estuary. The quaint Magor Square is only a few minutes drive from the M4 junction 23a and is a hidden gem tucked away next to the picturesque St Mary’s Church with ample car parking. The original Welsh language name Magwyr, from which the English name is derived, is thought tooriginate from the Latin maceria, meaning masonry walls or ruins.

After visiting Magor, and viewing the building that would soon become their Cafe Bar, Gianni and Abbie fell in love with the town and, on the 23rd of June 2016, Grazia opened its doors.

GRAZIA

COMING SOON EXCITING NEWS!

Pizza Al Taglio Described as a cafe bar and early evening supper club by the owners, Grazia serves breakfasts, cakes, and delicious Italian paninis in the day, and antipasti, pasta, pizzas, and steak in the evening; Segafredo Coffee, which Gianni says is one of the best tasting coffees around, is available throughout the day. As Grazia is a cafe bar and not a restaurant, they initially had an informal approach to evening service, thinking that their customers would treat it more as a daytime retreat. However, due to high customer demand, Grazia will now stay open later on Fridays and Saturdays (starting at the end of October), so that

everyone has more chance to enjoy the delicious food that is on offer inside. As a traditional family business, Abbie and Gianni strive to offer a personal service to all that visit, no matter if you’re regulars or new faces. “Our customers are very important to us, so we try and take on board any comments that are made to us. This way Grazia can continue to evolve into its best possible self. We pride ourselves on good quality, traditional style food that is made using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Our breads, cakes, and cheesecakes are all from local ladies with whom we have built great relationships - it has been so enjoyable working with them.” 47

Gianni and Abbie are delighted to announce Pizza Al Taglio coming to Grazia in November. Their daghter Amy and her partner Walter Ceccarelli will be your hosts and looking forward to gtreeting you.

Laura Spuffard discovered her calling through a work experience scheme at her school spending a week working in a florist she knew that it was the job for her. After leaving school she applied to train in floristry straight away and, for the last eight years, has spent her days doing the job she loves.

THE FLOWER SHED

With eight years in the floristry industry, including that fateful work experience week that set Laura on her current path, Laura is happy to announce the arrival of The Flower Shed, a shop that has bloomed into existence thanks to the love and devotion that Laura has for the art of floristry. Laura is inspired by the beauty of the local countryside: “My style is heavily influenced by the country – it really inspires me,” she says. Laura likes to highlight her designs with British blooms that contain only the loveliest scents. Offering her customers a friendly face and expertly trained help, Laura will do

her best to help you choose the perfect flower arrangement for you, no matter the occasion. Also the flowers purchased from The Flower Shed can be arranged in a vase or country style jug which allows customers the ability to enjoy their flowers straight away without having to worry about arranging them themselves. Although she can cover the flower arrangements for weddings, funerals, events, and everyday purchases, Laura told us that her favourite part of her job occurs during the wedding season. “Seeing a happy bride and groom and being able to arrange flowers for their perfect day, to be a part of their wedding memory, is something that I cherish and always look forward to.” 48

In addition, Lauras stocks a large range of giftware, wedding gifts, general gifts and scented candles.

Builth Wells is a town and electoral ward in the county of Powys, within the historic boundaries ofBrecknockshire, mid Wales, lying at the confluence of the River Wye and the River Irfon, in the Welsh (or Upper section) of the Wye Valley. It has a population of 2,568, or 2,994 including the neighbouring village of Llanelwedd in Radnorshire. Builth is an anglicization of the Welsh BuelltorBuallt. It derives from the Welsh words bu, meaning “ox”, and gellt (later gwellt), meaning “pasture”, rendering “cow pasture”. The town added “Wells” to the name in the 19th century when its springs were promoted as a visitor attraction.

The versatile Modulog is a unique glamping pod, garden room, summer house or office/studio with a unique modular design. Each Modulog is handcrafted by experienced tradesmen using traditional methods and locally sourced materials.

MODULOG

Wye Life chats with Neil and Sally Pemberton who commissioned their own Modulog glamping pod for their site at Bartershill Farmhouse in the heart of the Cotswolds… How did you hear about Modulog? Following our barn conversions we were looking for a unique, quality, luxury product for our self-catering guests that would blend with the rest of our grounds. Our search began on the internet and that’s where we found Modulog. We spoke with Leigh Price of Modulog and a site visit was arranged for us where we could see brochures and photographs of other installations, and the best part was a scaled down version of a Modulog in different parts - so you could almost design your own version within minutes of interaction. What made you choose a Modulog? After the site visit we visited the joinery in Builth Wells where we learnt that

the different layers of insulation meant we could offer all year round accommodation, plus it had a robust feel; the joinery was of the highest standard and we both loved the curved woodwork. The rustic finish meant that the natural wood effect would blend into the surroundings of our grounds over the years. What input did you have in designing your own Modulog? We then set about designing our very own five berth version with Leigh; everything was bespoke down to the open end timber wall, the different wood finishes, patio doors, decking and even the bunk room over the main double room. Once we’d made our choices the quotation process was quick and we excitedly ordered our very own Modulog. Leigh helped us with the planning permission which went through smoothly. In fact he christened our Modulog 'The Pemberton'. 66

The next stage was choosing our furnishings; we wanted to keep the quirky vintage style but with the highest standards of quality for our guests. We eagerly chose the bathroom, log burner, smart tv with wifi, kitchen with induction hob, patio chairs, double bed, and a bed settee. How was the installation process? Within 12 weeks our Modulog was ready to install, then in just a week everything was fitted. We employed local tradesmen to fit electricity and water; they made it seem effortless. Leigh and his team from Modulog couldn't have been more helpful, and their attention to detail and tidiness was excellent. How pleased are you with your Modulog? We’re thrilled; we’ve already had a variety of guests from young families and romantic couples to cyclists,

walkers and general visitors to the local towns such as Stow-on-Wold, Burford and Chipping Norton. We have a number of fantastic reviews with comments such as ‘love their cabin and the peaceful, visual aspect, environmental feel.’ From our viewpoint we’ve been delighted from start to finish; the craftsmanship is of the highest quality and the Modulog is so cosy, warm and natural, and so unique. It's already proving cost effective and affordable to upkeep, so certainly well on it's way to paying back our investment. We can honestly say that we’ve become firm friends with Leigh and his staff, and would certainly consider more Modulogs in the future.

The Moody Cow is situated in the pretty village of Upton Bishop, a mere two miles from the historic market town of Ross on Wye, in the beautiful Wye Valley, and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy terrific food, drinks, and old fashioned hospitality. Wye Life chats with proprietors Chris and Dawn Burgess…

MOODY COW Congratulations on your anniversary, we hear it’s been five years since you saved the Moody Cow from being closed down and boarded up? Thank you. That’s right; the Moody Cow was the only village pub here in Upton Bishop, and was about to be shut down before we stepped in. Our backgrounds are in hospitality so we set out with a simple vision; to create the kind of country pub we would like to go to ourselves - with authentic homemade food, using the best, most local ingredients we could find; with relaxed, informal but attentive service and of course a well-kept cellar. From the outset we were joined by Tom, our Head Chef, he shared our vision, loves creating new dishes that inspire his young, enthusiastic team and make our guests want to return again and again. His energy and commitment have been vital to our success. Can you tell us about your food? Our menu is refreshed every day and new dishes are created every week. We work closely with local farmers, brewers, growers and merchants to

source the best produce. We are so fortunate in Herefordshire – right here on our doorstep we have some of the best ingredients we could hope for, but when it’s necessary we don’t hesitate to go further afield, the quality has to be right. Almost every component of every dish is created from raw ingredients in our own kitchens, as we speak we are making tomato chilli jam for our fillet of beef and oxtail burger, pasta sheets with fresh basil for our open wild mushroom and sun blushed tomato lasagne and a chorizo mousse to fill our pan fried chicken breast which we serve with a creamy mustard sauce. In the larder Tom is making his chicken liver parfait and in the pastry section we are making a chocolate and salted caramel torte and a baked lime cheesecake. If we have any spare chutney, marmalade or jam we will pop it into a Kilner jar and offer it to our guests; we also sell Moody Cow blend tea, which is characterised by a smokey Yunnan 70

finish and in addition to this we have a range of handmade Moody Cow chocolate. And we’ve heard you have your own membership card We wanted to find a way of thanking our guests for their loyalty, so we introduced the Moody Cow club card. We now have almost 300 card holders. We charge £10 and the card is yours to keep, then each month we send you a newsletter that lets you know about upcoming events and the treats that club card holders are entitled to. This October we’re offering free nibbles if you pop in for an early evening drink, a bottle of sparkling pinot noir if you reserve a table for six, a free dessert if you choose a starter and main course from our lunchtime or evening menu, and entry to our draw when you present your card. Last month one of our guests from Ross on Wye won a bottle of Champagne. If you miss the newsletter we also publish the monthly treats for club card holders on our website.

We know you’ve won many awards, which ones are you most proud of? We’re over the moon to have been awarded a coveted listing in the Michelin Red Guide for the second year running. This places us in the top 590 dining pubs in Great Britain, and as with all of our awards, is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our whole team. Also we’re thrilled to have achieved a 'Certificate of Excellence' from the TripAdvisor community for five years running. We think it is important that care and attention to detail goes into every dish that we serve and we are constantly introducing new dishes and improving existing ones. Many of the improvements that we’ve made have their roots in an observation or comment that one of our guests has made, we see feedback as a gift for which we are very grateful. And dare we say it but the festive season is looming. What do you have lined up for December? For us, preparation is well under way, we have just wound up cask ale week,

which was a great success and gave us an excuse to taste and cook with more local ales, and earlier today we made arrangements for our Christmas Tree to be delivered. During October half term holiday we invite our younger guests to design the decoration for the top of our Christmas tree, the most original in the eyes of our judges (Chris) is then made and put on top of the tree for the lighting ceremony. The lucky winner is invited to see their design come to life at the lighting ceremony, and also receives a gift and the prestigious Challenge Cup to keep for a year. When we light the tree we have carol singing, warm mince pies, mulled wine and apple juice, and hot roasted chestnuts. This year the fun starts on Thursday 1st December. During December our menu will feature more game, spiced poached fruits and compotes, roasted squashes and rich parfaits, nutty terrines and of course our year round favourites. The roaring log fire is a fantastic place to finish with a glass or two of something warming. 71

One of the joys of working on Wye Life is meeting new and interesting people with a story to tell. Julie and John Joseph welcomed us on to their beautiful farm and chatted to us about their incredibly successful business. Courtesy of Chris Lyons

NO K IDDING!

Kid Meat is healthy, nutritious and versatile with a fabulous flavour, and since celebrity chefs and TV shows have set a new trend to eat kid goat meat in Britain, business has doubled for Julie and John Joseph at their Trecorras Farm near Ross on Wye in Herefordshire. Julie and John’s premium British kid meat was also served as the main course at the BBC Food & Farming Awards night recently. The Josephs’ passion for the environment and for food with provenance produced to high welfare standards and in a sustainable way resonates with chefs and restaurants.

One year since their launch and Trecorras Farm supplies chefs locally and nationally direct from the farm, and with meat that is respected for its flavour and consistently high quality. The farm is a member of the Slow Food movement which the Josephs find is appreciated and sought by discerning chefs as a mark of quality and care. Kid goat meat has been overlooked in the UK but is now acknowledged for its tenderness, delicate flavour and nutritional qualities – it is lower in fat than chicken and high in iron and protein. Kid meat is to goat as lamb is to mutton; it has become a hot food trend and a big hit with chefs. Julie and John have been working hard 74

to raise awareness of this tasty meat. They liaise with Artisan Butchers to advise on the best cuts and how to use them and look to help chefs with ideas, as surprisingly many have not cooked with it before. Whist they predominantly sell to chefs and restaurants, due to local demand and interest, their kid meat is also on sale at Pengethley Farm Shop at Peterstow near Ross-on-Wye and at Andy Crease Butchers in Newent. The success and demand for kid has encouraged the Josephs to explore other opportunities for this versatile meat. They have been working with award winning Native Breeds in

Multi award-winning Glewstone Court is a charming, Georgian Grade II listed, Country Manor House set in two acres of beautiful grounds with stunning views of the Herefordshire Countryside. Wye Life chats with husband and wife team Gary and Karen Homewood, who run this stylish country house hotel along with their daughter Amy and her partner Sam Nicholls.

GLEWSTONE COURT It’s lovely to see you again, what’s new since we last saw you? We’ve recently opened a ninth bedroom which is a cosy double room finished to a very high standard with underfloor heating, a walk-in shower, 32 inch plasma TV and all the other amenities you would expect. We’re also thrilled to have won ‘Best Newcomer’ at the Three Counties Wedding Awards on Saturday 10th September, so a huge thank you to all of our lovely couples who reviewed us and to our amazing team here at Glewstone Courtw. Congratulations, that’s superb news. We can see how the impressive the country house is, and how its gorgeous setting makes Glewstone an exceptional venue for weddings. Thank you. We had a busy few weeks

at the end of August and start of September with weddings. We had a beautiful marquee wedding with a country theme, lots of lovely British blooms, bunting and a huge rustic fruit cake decorated with sunflowers. We already have weddings booked into 2017 and 2018 which is great news. For us it is not simply about having a superb venue, it is much more about listening and understanding the specific needs and ideas of the couple, building on them, and then finally delivering the couples dreams for their perfect day. Personal touches and attention to detail are what our family and superb team believe make the difference. We care because we know how important it is to celebrate, enjoy life and create and capture all those special moments. 76

We know that local, seasonal produce is key for you; what can we look forward to in your autumn menus? Our a la carte and lunch menus will be changing mid-October, dishes will be focused on the best fresh and local produce available for the season. We will also be introducing a seven course taster with matched wines on request. A preview of the menus will be available at the start of October on our website. If you love Halloween (like us!) then we do have a deliciously gruesome menu featuring Bobbing Apple Braised Pork Ribs, and Rocky Road Kill Ice Cream, this is available on Friday 28th October, full menu on our website. That sounds spooky and spectacular. What are you planning for the festive season?

We have lots planned for the festive season, including a Mistletoe & Wine Dinner on 2nd December featuring a seven course menu with wines matches for each dish, a Christmas party night on 3rd December with a three course winter menu and disco by Pete Stead. On 9th December our diners will be entertained by The Roaring Megs, who many people might know as Herefordshire’s home-grown choir! A set winter menu of three courses will be served everyday throughout December and will be available at lunch and dinner, alongside the a la carte menu in the evenings. We will be open again this year on Christmas Day, champagne on arrival followed by a special five course menu, open at lunchtime only and booking is advised! All of the information for

Christmas 2016 can be found on our website. We’re also taking bookings now for our New Year’s Eve dinner which includes a Champagne reception followed by a three course menu and tea/coffee and homemade petits fours; we’ll be entertained until 1am by the wonderful Bryn Yemm. Do you have any plans for the future? We will continue updating the bedrooms, and have some more exciting events planned for next year. At the moment we are very happy with what we have achieved since we took over ownership in November 2014; we have had huge support from our customers for which we are very grateful and sincerely hope will continue and grow. D R Rosser, Chemist Rosser’s Chemist has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment in keeping with the Georgian building and in line with the Grade II listed building requirements. The chemist has a long history dating back to 1831 when it was established. In 2006, Daniel took over and was one of the youngest independent chemist owners at 25 and won the prestigious ‘Independent Welsh Pharmacist of the Year’ award linked to services provided to the local community for which he’s very proud. “The new refit has enabled a larger dispensing area and a new consultation room means new services can be offered, in addition to the services the chemist currently provides.”

Daniel has worked closely with listed buildings to preserve many original features and showcase the pharmaceutical artefacts collated over the last two centuries, whilst sensitively modernising the shop.

In addition to providing a reliable and much used dispensing service (and free home delivery service), Rosser’s Chemist are stockists of many sought after ranges such as La Roche-Posay, Vichy, Roger & Gallet, Floris, Bronnley, GEO. F. Trumper, Yardley, Green Angel, Mason & Pearson Brushes, Kent Brushes, in addition to stocking a large range of perfumes. The friendly team at Rosser’s Chemist welcome you to the newly refurbished shop and will continue to provide the community touch from the only independent chemist in Monmouth!

Chepstow’s independent school, St John’s on-the-Hill, provides an education for girls and boys aged 4 years to 13 years which will motivate, challenge and inspire them.

ST JOHN’S ON-THE-HILL

Wye Life chats with the preparatory school’s newly appointed Head, Ruth Frett, on the first day of the new school term... We appreciate this is your first day, and thank you for taking the time to see us; can you tell us a bit about yourself? You’re welcome. I studied at St Andrew’s University and Trinity College of Music and I’m about to complete a Master’s in Education. Throughout my career I have taught at five schools, most recently running a successful boarding house for 116 girls at Cranleigh School. Having been a professional singer for more than 10 years, performing on Radio 4 and in concerts all over the world, I’m delighted to bring my passion for performing arts and love of world cultures to the children of St John’s.

We understand you’re the first female Head in St John’s 93 years of history. What are your priorities? St John’s has a rich and long history of providing an all-round excellent standard of education for every child that walks through its doors. I plan to build on that. I have a team of teachers who are continually finding new and innovative ways to excite children in their learning. My immediate priority is to get to know the children as quickly as possible. I will be in their classrooms, having lunch with them, cheering them on from the touchline and listening to their opinions and dreams for the future. At St John’s there is a passion to see children thrive in a close-knit, family environment where children are stretched and where academic excellence is achieved but not at the expense of the pupils’ emotional well-being. 84

It is my responsibility as Head to instil in pupils core values such as resilience, curiosity and self-control and I will ensure we use all the tools available, so our children will want to push themselves to achieve their passions and potential. What makes St John’s stand out over other schools? We focus on providing the very best academic and pastoral support, believing strongly in the value that a breadth of experiences can add to a child’s character as they develop. As you would expect, class sizes are small and the staff to pupil ratio is difficult to beat with specialist teaching from a young age in all subjects. We offer innovative learning methods that get children excited about learning. The English Department’s accelerated reading programme, pioneered by Head of English, Andy Downie, is a brilliant

example of how we are encouraging boys and girls to be passionate about reading. Dave Bennett, Head of Science, is a fabulous teacher and finds brilliant ways to encourage pupils to share his love of science with unusual experiments in our science labs and on regular field trips. Matthew Allen, Head of Mathematics, has written a parents’ guide about how to support their children with learning maths – he is also launching an accelerated maths programme in the coming weeks. Our new Director of Music, Dave Mitchell, will be building on our strong music background. Those are only a few examples of our exceptionally dedicated teachers – I could go on. What activities do you offer? We’re totally inclusive – every child participates in music, arts and sport at no extra cost. St John’s has a strong tradition in sport excellence,

with superb facilities such as our tennis court, swimming pool and Astroturf; and our exceptional music and performing arts classes are on a par with some senior schools. Also we provide excellent wrap-around care and flexi-boarding – we’re a home away from home. What is flexi-boarding? This is where we allow flexible boarding, for two nights or more, which gives friends the opportunity to have sleepovers. Lastly, do you have any plans for the future? My vision is to nurture and encourage every child’s ambitions so that all our children reach their potential and exceed their own expectations. As a school there is plenty of capacity for growth, including operating an open door policy for our staff and pupils. 85

Pinstripe Legal Services is run by Bob Jones, a qualified lawyer specialising in Company and Commercial law.

BOB JONES PINSTRIPE LEGAL Bob has been running Pinstripe since 2003 and overseen it’s development into a niche provider of commercial legal services to small and medium sized companies in the South West and South Wales area. Here, in his own words, Bob tells us more about Pinstripe.

Pinstripe specialises in company sales and purchases and shareholder matters, such as shareholder agreements, investment agreements and shareholder disputes. It offers a professional, responsive service with fixed fees agreed up front. Having been born and bred in Cardiff, after spending twenty years in Bristol, I was yearning to get back to Wales. We finally made the move across the border to Caerwent, Monmouthshire in 2007. I looked for new offices and finally settled into Basepoint, Chepstow and have spent many happy years here. The staff are friendly and efficient creating a very congenial environment. The family are very pleased with the move to Wales, my wife is half Welsh anyway and my daughter is now a fervent Welsh citizen and keen supporter of the culture and language. We are both season ticket holders with the Cardiff Blues rugby team. I have learnt to speak Welsh at a local night class and love to take whatever opportunity I can get to speak it. One of the things that first attracted us to Caerwent was its history. It is a Roman town - much of it still enclosed within late 3rd century walls. Within these town walls are excavated houses, a forum, and a Romano-British temple. Although not well known, the historian John Newman described the walls in Caerwent as “easily the most impressive town defence to survive from Roman Britain, and in its freedom from later rebuilding one of the most perfectly preserved in Northern Europe”. As the Chairman of the Caerwent Historic Trust I, along with my fellow Trustees,

“Thanks to Basepoint, without your support I couldn’t have done this.” am keen to help document and preserve its history and provide information to residents old and new. The Trust is currently involved in a number of activities including building up an oral history of Caerwent from the older residents some of whom have spent all their lives in the village. A very exciting project is that run by First Campus who secured £39K from Heritage Lottery to re-create Caerwent Roman Town as a digitally organic 3D experience, titled “Virtual Heritage Wales - Caerwent Roman Town”, this project is collaboration between First Campus at the University of South Wales, National Museum Wales and Cadw. Working with the latest 3D technologies, the project will create an interactive app and website; creating augmented reality tours of three of the site buildings and portable virtual reality kits and documentaries about Archaeology and Roman Britain. 87

Each Christmas, we try to find a different way of celebrating it with family. The truth is, the thought of spending Christmas slaving over a stove is, quite frankly, nothing to celebrate. So what’s the alternative? Well, The Stonemill, near Rockfield, has the answer.

CHRISTMAS AT THE STONEMILL

We’re big fans of The Stonemill. We love its location (no suprises that it’s popular as a wedding venue). We love this beautiful 17th century barn conversion, especially the interior (a fusion of cool, country contemporary design). Most of all we love the warm welcome and the food, so when we looked at their Christmas menu, we were smitten. Owner, Michelle Decloedt, and her team have put together a beautifully balanced, festive menu for Christmas and if you’re thinking of booking, we suggest you do it soon - I’m sure will be a sell-out. Michelle says, “Bookings can be made now for tables for the Christmas Party Menu, which is available from 1st December to 23rd December, lunchtimes and evenings (excluding Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch).” The Stonemill isn’t open on Christmas day this year but you can try their new Christmas Eve taster menu, specially devised for the festive season. Michelle is keen to stress that The Stonemill’s

popular a la carte menu is available throughout December. Michelle added, “Christmas is all about family and, as a family run business, we really understand how special this time of the year is and how important it is to celebrate in style.” So, if you’re looking for somewhere truly special to celebrate our favourite time of the year, The Stonemill should be on your speed dial and we suggest you book soon, it really is that good. Please ring us first to check availability on your chosen date. As Christmas is a very busy time, you are advised to book early to avoid disappointment. a la carte menu is also available throughout December. Please order your Christmas Party menu selection a minimum of three days before your booking. A deposit per person is required with your order to confirm your booking. Malmo Hearing is a family-run business devoted to offering the best solutions for all your hearing needs, and is Voice’s Business of the Month.

M ALMO HEARING

Malmo takes its name from its founders, Mal and Mo Johnston, who first opened the doors to their flagship store in Bridgend during the winter of 2007. Mal is a qualified audiologist who has many years’ experience working within the field and Mo is the company’s secretary, and is also a hearing aid wearer. The Johnston’s know how hearing loss can affect the whole family, not just the individual, as Mal and Mo’s children and grandchildren have suffered with hearing difficulties at some point in their lives.

Additionally, this family-run business knows first-hand how frustrating it can be waiting to solve a problem with your hearing, especially with long waiting lists and limited hearing aid options from the NHS - at their practices, people can be seen to quickly and efficiently, solving most hearing problems instantly. Leanne Andrews, who is the hearing aid audiologist for the new Newport branch, and also Mal and Mo’s daughter told us, The response since opening our new store has been incredible. I don’t think we were expecting such a high demand for our services. Not only that, we’ve already had many referrals from the people of Newport, due to the great customer service that we give to each and every one of our customers. We recently won the Customer Service Award at the South Wales Business awards 2016 for our hard work and commitment to our customers. “We’re open six days a week, during which our core services are hearing assessments, hearing aid demonstrations, and repair and servicing of hearing aids. 90

We supply advice and products to protect your hearing such as if you are a musician or work in construction where there is a lot of noise - we also provide hearing protection for shooting, radio communication, swimming and snoring. Our dedicated Ear Wax Micro Suction removal service is quite popular too - this is where we remove wax from the ear if there has been a build-up of wax or an underlying infection. We also carry out assessments by appointment for noise induced hearing loss claims and medical negligence on behalf of legal practices’ clients. “Tinnitus is a common hearing ailment, but we have many solutions for this as each case is different. We stock a great range from Starkey to combat tinnitus, which can deliver personalised relief that customers can control.

“Hearing aids have come on leaps and bounds in the past 10 years.”

Hearing aids have come on leaps and bounds in the past 10 years, and we stock a fantastic range that can be synced to your smart phone and television, and can be controlled by a remote or app on your phone - it’s truly amazing, your telephone conversation or favourite TV programme can be streamed straight into your ear through the hearing aid. “To make the right decision when choosing a hearing aid, you have to consider more than just the cost.

Local hearing care for local people this is the philosophy of the business and what sets us apart from the competition. We sell better hearing, not hearing aids. Also, we’re not tied to any particular manufacturer so this allows us to independently provide an unbiased choice for our clients’ needs. So, if you’re having difficulty with your hearing or know someone who is, why not pop along to this friendly, familyrun business, who will do their very best to help you.

Price is of course important, but the particular hearing loss a potential client may have and their lifestyle must be considered along with what level of technology would be needed. “Many factors need to be addressed so that the client gets the best advice and a good choice, and solution, to their particular needs. “This is where our years of experience and customer service is key. We offer a 60-day money back guarantee on all our hearing aids. We support our clients by providing warranties, scheduling regular free of charge check-ups and providing assistance as and when they need it - so a truly all round local service.

It may be a town famous for Henry V, Geoffrey of Monmouth and Charles Rolls, but Monmouth is now celebrating its contemporary history with an exhibition about its legendary recording studio; Rockfield.

The story of Rockfield, Monmouth and Music. A new exhibition at Monmouth Museum. From Robert Plant to Motorhead, Queen to Tom O’Dell, some of the biggest names in the music industry have passed through the doors of this former farm and riding stable to create music that is known around the world. Stables To Studios tells the story of brothers Charles and Kingsley Ward; two musicians and dairy farmers who transformed the family farm, once part of the Rolls Hendre Estate, into an internationally famous residential recording studio which is still in operation today. Meet ‘Doris’ the tape machine, on which iconic hits such as Bohemian Rhapsody were recorded. See the guitar

Noel Gallagher played on Wonderwall, and the football shirt worn by Noel when Oasis played Nigel Kennedy’s team on Chippenham Fields.

Museums Service, as part of their Welsh Baccalaureate qualification. It is a truly remarkable achievement and this summer’s ‘must see’ exhibition.

Find out what the bands think of Rockfield by exploring the visitor books and discover just how many of your own albums were recorded at this world renowned studio.

The exhibition also features the memories of local people who encountered band members in the town’s shops, pubs and restaurants and offers visitors an opportunity to record their own experiences too. Llangoed Hall is one of our most favourite hotels in the world. It sits, majestically, in seventeen beautiful acres alongside the A470 between Llyswen and Builth Wells. Every time we return to this beautiful Jacobean manor house, it feels like we’re returning home so when managing Director, Calum Milne, says he feels the same, we understand completely.

WHERE THE HEART IS

For Calum though, Llangoed Hall really is home. Calum knows Llangoed Hall inside out having managed the property for Sir Bernard Ashley from 2003 to 2007. Following the sale of Llangoed Hall in 2012, and a short hiatus helping a family member through illness, Calum returned as Managing Director and has since overseen the entire refurbishment of the hotel and grounds. In the summer of 2013, Calum was made an ambassador of the Cambrian Mountains Initiative, due to Llangoed Hall’s contribution to the overall sustainability of this region of Wales. “I am delighted to have overseen the hotel go through this transformation which has enhanced the local area. Over the many years I have known Llangoed Hall it has become a second home. Llangoed Hall has a great past, present and future and the story is still being written,” he says with a determined twinkle in his eye.

The mansion house is built on the site of Llangoed Castle. In 1912, Clough Williams-Ellis redesigned it as a country house, retaining the original Jacobean porch. Llangoed is perfectly positioned if you want to explore the Wye Valley and south Powys. Its backdrop is the Black Mountains and the festival towns of Hay-on-Wye and Brecon are a short drive away. If you love walking and fishing you’ll be in seventh heaven and, if art, fashion and design inspires you, you will be forgiven for thinking you’ve walked into one of the best independent galleries in the world. Yes, Llangoed’s art collection is just a little bit special. Sir Bernard Ashley’s private collection of art, which still resides at Llangoed Hall, includes paintings, drawings and works of fine art that are much admired by museum curators around the world. The collection includes magnificent original antiques, sketches by the American-born artist and society wit, James McNeil Whistler and works by 96

Herman Dudley Murphy and Augustus John. Guests at Llangoed can browse the collection at any time during their stay. Treasured framed photographs of the Ashley family through the years are dotted around the hotel along with iconic design moments such as black and white campaign photographs from the 1970s. These historical memorabilia reinforce the elegant home-from-home atmosphere that Calum loves about the hotel and, as we sit in the drawing room sipping good tea, we chat about our meal the night before which, I have to say, was excellent – followed a very close second by superb wine and wonderful service. Food is something Calum is clearly passionate about, “Llangoed Hall has several fine dining accolades; 3 AA Rosettes for food and Notable Wine List. In addition, The Good Food Guide awarded Llangoed Hall a ‘Top 50 UK Restaurants’ listing whilst The Sunday

Times awarded the hotel Wales’s leading dining destination,” he says proudly. We talk about the new organic kitchen garden, and the duck houses; Head Chef Nick Brodie takes inspiration from the hotel’s organic kitchen and uses eggs from three duck houses - Chicken, Duck and Quail, and can often be found in the kitchen gardens. I am full of praise for the new beefriendly meadow they’ve planted. Llangoed Hall is also an environmental winner with many green initiatives which secured the Conde Nast Johansens ‘Best for Green Practices Award’ 2016. The flowers are beautiful but it’s also enabled Llangoed Hall to produce its own honey. We sip tea and try to put the world to right and, in that hour, Calum’s passion for Llangoed Hall is almost uncontainable. I talk to people every day in business who claim to be

passionate about their businesses - and they are! But this is more, this is much more… this is love. Calum Milne loves Llangoed Hall. You can see it in his eyes, you can hear it when he talks. It’s wonderful to hear, and completely understandable, because that’s what Llangoed Hall does to you; as a guest it scoops you up, takes hold of you and, for the time you’re there, says, “we’ll look after you.” We love that. Calum says Sir Bernard Ashley ‘s first word to him was ‘cariad’ (cariad means love in Welsh). He used to say, “You have to love what you do Calum. You have to Love Llangoed, and that love has to come across.” Llangoed Hall’s twenty-three bedrooms all have beautiful views of the surrounding Welsh countryside. A night at Llangoed Hall is priced from £150.00 B&B based on two sharing (prices correct at time of going to press). 97

“An utterly idyllic landscape! Superbly equipped and beautifully finished made this a home from home. It is with heavy hearts that we leave ‘The Laundry’ however it is only a matter of time before we’re back and hopefully for longer. It has been complete luxury and the memories will last a lifetime.”

TYˆ M AWR COLLECTION

Peter & Alexandra Davies’ have tastefully converted the five outbuildings in their extensive grounds into five luxurious selfcatering cottages called The Ty Mawr Collection, comprising five unique self-catering cottages. Ideal for a family break or that special romantic hide-away, all are graded five star by the Welsh Tourist Board and offer the very best in luxury living. Originally from Brecon, Peter met Alexandra in London where he was living at the time, and both resolved to invest in a property that they could develop together. They began their pursuit for the ideal investment property and came across the beautiful Cadw Grade II* Georgian mansion through an online property search. They could see the huge potential Ty Mawr had to offer and both fell in love with its location in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. They spent a year extensively renovating

the derelict outbuildings, converting them into four unique one bedroom cottages and one two bedroomed cottage, opening for business in September 2013. The names of the cottages reflect their former use and each has its own distinct interior design with private patios and stunning garden areas (perfect for dog lovers). The cottages are set in a huge 15 acre enclosed parkland with its own stream, perfect for guests to roam and walk their dogs. There is a private entrance and a guest car park at the rear of the cottages. The five cottages are: The Bothy - 2 bedrooms, The Cottage - 1 bedroom, The Coach - 1 bedroom, The Dairy - 1 bedroom, The Laundry - 1 bedroom. Each is decorated to the highest standard and complemented with elegant furnishings, cosy log burners with an unlimited supply of logs, scented candles, fluffy gowns and 98

crisp, white linen. Perfect for the great outdoors or just curled up in front of the roaring log burners with a glass (or two) of wine, these cottages will delight whatever the season. The Ty Mawr Collection is on the outskirts of the pretty village of Llanfrynach and only three hours from London, just five minutes off the A40 and within easy driving distance of the market towns of Brecon, Hay-onWye and Crickhowell. There’s plenty to do in the surrounding area, whether you want hill walking, low level walking, biking, horse riding, fishing, sailing, historic buildings, events, local pubs, fine dining, spa treatments

or just relaxing in your perfect cottage. Bike and canoe hire are available locally along with horse riding and fishing. Plus there are an oasis of quality restaurants nearby such as The Felin Fach Griffin, The White Swan (just three minutes walk), Three Horseshoes in Groesffordd, The Walnut Tree, The Hardwick and Llangoed Hall. Guests come from all over Wales and the UK, with many visitors returning each year - and some staying in a different cottage for each visit. Open all year around; change over days are Friday and Monday with short breaks Friday - Monday 3 nights and Monday - Friday 4 nights. 99

Set in the Brecon Beacons National Park, and just three miles from Brecon town centre, this beautiful Georgian country house hotel is an elegant home away from home.

PETERSTONE COURT

There are eight stylish bedrooms in the main house, including a master suite; the annexed stables have been converted into four duplex loft rooms, ideal for guests with dogs. All rooms have fabulously comfy beds, flatscreen TVs, DVD players, tea and coffee makers with homemade cookies delivered daily, robes, slippers, en-suite bathrooms with gorgeous Myddfai toiletries, and full use of the fantastic spa facilities. A three bedroom cottage is a mere two minute walk along the picturesque driveway.

For some well-deserved ‘me time’, the spa offers the chance to relax in the jacuzzi, detox in the sauna, take a dip in the seasonal heated pool, or work out in the gym where qualified fitness instructors are on hand to help you - or simply sit in the Moroccan styled relaxation room after a treatment or two, and chill-out with a refreshing drink.

The restaurant at Peterstone has won many awards for its food and is recommended by all the major food guides; their Head Chef has a talent for creating dishes which combine traditional favourites with a modern British bistro-style. Come try our new lunch menu, also our set menu - £16 for two courses or £20 for three courses.

Outside the restaurant and bar there’s a wonderful, spacious terrace with tables overlooking the beautiful valley below, perfect for a summertime drink or al fresco dining in the sunshine.

With the beautiful gardens overlooking the river Usk and the Pen Y Fan Mountain range, the views from Peterstone Court are truly stunning, and make a perfect backdrop for a country wedding. It’s no surprise then that Peterstone Court was awarded “number one wedding venue in the UK for Georgian splendour,” by Tiara wedding magazine.

Peterstone is run and owned by a group of restaurateurs rather than hoteliers, so it’s no surprise that great food lies at the heart of the house which is supplied by a network of hardworking, passionate local suppliers.

The gorgeous surroundings; relaxed atmosphere; friendly, attentive service and fabulous food all add up to a truly wonderful experience and special offering - but don't take our word it, why not try it yourself.

The Conservatory Restaurant and a cosy bar are open every day for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.

With so many companies in Wales offering bi-fold doors and windows, it can be difficult to choose the right company. The best endorsement for any company is a testimonial from a happy customer. Rob and Valerie Gooding (and son Jules) allow us into their beautiful home in Dinas Powys to share their bifold story.

POLISHED PERFORMANCE

Who are you and what do you do for a living? My name is Rob Gooding and I am the Managing Director of Fiddes Group. We manufacture a range of wood finishing products, having done so for over four generations. We also acquired a sports line marking business in 2005, Bowcom Ltd, and this now forms part of the Fiddes Group. We manufacture and supply the line marking paints and applicators for various amenity sectors, including schools and Councils through to the Premier League and RFU/WRU major stadiums and training facilities. How long have you lived in Dinas Powys? I have lived in the property for seventeen years, with my wife Valerie who is French and Head of MFL in Secondary School and Jules who is in year 9.

Did you contact other companies for quotes? Yes, one well-respected Cardiff company visited and quoted, however never followed up on their quotation, and then another, who again quoted. We contacted them again to enquire about their quotation - they promised to respond but, again, failed to follow up. Alexander James on the other hand were prompt with their quotation which gave us even more confidence in using them.

What work did they carry out? They supplied and fitted three sets of bifold doors. One set leading off from our kitchen/diner into the garden, the other from our lounge, into the garden and the other from Jules’s room, which again leads off into the garden. How long did the process take? We were surprised at how little time it took. All in all, only three days.

How did you hear about Alexander James? Through Andrew Farmer. I knew Andrew from secondary school.

Were they prompt, clean and tidy? Yes. We didn’t even know they were there, they were so professional. They cleaned and tidied up after each day. They arrived on time on the days they promised that they would be there.

What made you decide to work with Alexander James Bifolds? Namely Andrew. He is very professional and attentive. Although our connection wasn’t the main reason we went with Alexander James, it does help to know and have faith in who you are dealing with.

What difference have the bi-fold doors made to the way you use your property? They advised on what system would be the most effective in allowing more light into our property, whilst remaining sympathetic to the originality of our home generally.

104

Our house is circa 1915, so low ceilings and quite dark, these windows have lightened the rooms considerably, are easy to maintain and made a significant difference to the overall ambience of the areas in which they have been installed. Our kitchen area was perhaps the most challenging, as there was a large breakfront, with oak doors and pillars which limited the design options. Andrew created a design that maximised the amount of light available, whilst reducing the number of frame and panel breaks to a minimum. We want to install a log burning stove in the kitchen area and they even gave us advice on how best we might do this as they were familiar with all of the Fire and Building Regulations needed. We regularly have friends and their children over and the new space has made a huge difference.

We now make more use of the garden and the patio area and feel like the garden is now more a part of the home. Were they competitive in their pricing? Yes, competitive. Did you find them value for money? Yes, and the follow-up has been very good. 105

Would you be happy to recommend Alexander James to others? Yes, most definitely. Alexander James Unit 3A, Ashmount Business Park Upper Forest Way, Swansea SA6 8QR 01792 794549 sales@alexanderjamesbifold.co.uk www.alexanderjamesbifold.co.uk

“I’m not crazy,” laughs Neil Ballard of Lewis Ballard Accountants. Yet when he cycles into Jasper in the central Canadian Rockies, on 10th September, he will have cycled 405 km, over five gruelling days, crossing one of the world’s most beautiful but challenging mountain ranges. This route is in the ‘Tough’ challenge category.

A ROCKIE ROAD TO CHANGE

So why does a 52 year old accountant think swapping his comfy armchair for a torturous saddle ride is a good idea? I rode from Boston to New York with my wife Jan in 2014 so have an idea what’s ahead, although this ride is much, much, harder. I don’t know what’s more terrifying - cycling up some of the world’s tallest mountains or trying to control your bike as you come back down. My son Chris and I are riding with fifty fantastic Velindre Hospital fundraisers and the camaraderie really helps. When Jan reached exhaustion point on day four last time, this support got her through. Everyone has weak moments, even the cycling enthusiasts and professional sports people taking part.

When you’re a portly pen pusher like me it’s even more challenging. After ten hours cycling on day one, the last thing you want is to get up and go again the next day-never mind the next four! It’s really tough, but nothing compares to what people fighting cancer go through every day. When people ask ‘why do it again?’ I tell them it’s really changed my life. It all began with our first charity dinner in March 2010, which is now an amazing annual event, raising nearly £100,000 for Velindre so far. As a result, we proudly became Velindre Ambassadors and before long, somehow, we’d joined the Boston challenge. It’s like magic! Both 50, overweight, unfit, running our own business took all our time. We weren’t looking after ourselves. 110

Exhausting all the usual routes; gyms, diets, even personal trainers - nothing helped, because work always came first. We were jaded, stressed, miserable, but once we committed to the challenge we had to find training time and that’s when the magic really happened.

“My son Chris and I are riding with fifty fantastic Velindre Hospital fundraisers.” Work became more efficient, we prioritised more, and the changes to our health and wellbeing were astounding. The ride also tested us mentally and our self-belief and confidence grew. Now we no longer stress about things, as we know we can meet any challenge.

It’s not like a bungee jump, which is all over in seconds… We totted up over 1,000 miles before even getting to Boston. This time I’ve trained since January and already ridden 110 miles from Cardiff to Tenby and 60 miles from Brecon to Cardiff for charity, in preparation. Every mile (even when it’s raining) makes a positive change, for the charity and for me.

Lives on hold… At Lewis Ballard we see many business owners with no time for family, holidays or hobbies. Lives on hold, waiting for more time, when in reality there’s less with each passing day. We help them implement systems to build business value and add balance to their lives. Changing is difficult, yet, I’ve learnt that committing to something extraordinary can change every area of your life. Do it for charity or something more personal. The key is stepping right out of your comfort zone and seeing what it brings you.’ If you would like to sponsor Neil go to https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/NeilandChris

After creating Superman inspired jewellery and an unbreakable wedding ring for Laurence Fishburne, Cardiff jewellery designer Neil Rayment really is flying high.

STAR STRUCK What better way to commemorate the cinematic release of Man Of Steel than with a stunning jewellery creation inspired by Superman himself? As a fan of the superhero and friend of the film’s star Laurence Fishburne, award-winning goldsmith Neil Rayment wanted to create an out of the ordinary tribute in the shape of Kal-El’s Crystal - an homage to Superman’s birthplace, a timeless classic, expertly crafted in platinum and diamonds. “I was looking for something spectacular, I’m a huge fan of Superman and the franchise featured heavily in my childhood,” says Neil, owner and artistic director at Advanced Jewel Craft. “What better place to seek inspiration than the birth place of Superman?” Advanced Jewel Craft attracts clientele as sparkling as its bespoke pieces. The iconic brand has slowly blossomed since its inception in 2004 and is now a firm favourite amongst A-listers from LA to Abu Dhabi. Oscar-nominated actor Laurence Fishburne is one of Neil’s most prestigious clients. The pair met when Neil briefly switched jewellerymaking for acting and appeared alongside him in The Matrix sequels. Neil was honoured to be tasked with designing and creating Laurence and his wife Gina Torres’ wedding rings.

VA L E L I F E I N TE RV I E W

One of Hollywood’s real diamonds Laurence kindly took time out of his busy schedule to explain more about his experience of working with Neil. How did your friendship with Neil come about? We worked on The Matrix sequels together. We became friends on set and then I found out that Neil’s passion was for jewellery design. Have you kept in touch? Have you been over to Wales to visit him? Yes we’ve kept up with each other but still have not made it to Wales I’m sorry to say. I’ve heard that it’s a very beautiful country.

Neil designed and made your wedding rings. That’s a high pressure assignment - how was he to work with? He was terrific. The basic design was worked out between Neil and my wife. We’re delighted with the result. Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind the design? Gina wanted something that would be unbreakable for me. I’m a would-be drummer, so I’m always beating things to hell. The platinum band and three diamonds are all a reflection of my personality and style. How involved were you in the design process? I’m very creative but I really felt it was best to trust both Neil and Gina on this one. It was our first custom jewellery experience. Neil often takes inspiration from films. If you could challenge Neil to design jewellery based on one of your previous films, which would it be? Probably King Of New York. I think that would be an interesting challenge for Neil but one I’m confident he could rise to. Created in his Cardiff Bay studio, Advanced Jewel Craft’s pieces are beautiful and exclusive. Neil adopts a personal approach, forging firm relationships with his customers. And while he works with A-list clients, his feet are firmly on the ground. “Jewellery is something that needs personal attention,” Neil says. “You can get entangled in the glamour, the parties, the shows, but the most rewarding thing is to see someone wearing one of my pieces and the pleasure it brings.”

If you haven’t tried it, you must! Chris Macnamara MD The Brogue Trader When it comes to price, versatility and finish, no other material can match it, which might explain why, for windows, doors and conservatories, aluminium is fast becoming the material of choice for the seriously savvy.

The UK may not be the manufacturing powerhouse it used to be but we still make shoes of exceptional quality. And yes, you pay a little more, but shoes of this quality (if you look after them) can last a lifetime. And you can’t say that about a lot of products these days.

THE LIGHT

FANTASTIC Vellacine have been manufacturing aluminium double glazing windows and conservatories in South Wales since 1978. We spoke to Managing Director, Mark Nayler about the resurgence of aluminium for windows and conservatories.

Vellacine has a solid reputation for supplying uPVC products. Why are you promoting aluminium? Aluminium went out of fashion simply because of problems with heat transfer between glass and frame. However, technological advances over the last ten years have meant that aluminium’s benefits of lightness and strength are making a serious comeback among consumers. We’re definitely noticing more enquiries, with customers asking us to cost a project alongside uPVC.

What are the benefits of aluminium? A warmer house, lower energy bills and less outside noise are just some of the benefits that our aluminium windows bring to the table. Increased security is important to customers. Our superstrong aluminium windows and superior locks help customers feel safer in their homes.

“The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.”

Is aluminium eco-friendly? The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.

What about colour? Our aluminium products can be custom-made for each property and come in almost any colour or style. They look great and our designs are highly attractive and certainly improve the look and value of a home. In addition to manufacturing aluminium products of the highest standard, we pride ourselves on the high standard of service we offer. Vellacine customers return to us time after time and most of our work is generated through word of mouth recommendation. We’re extremely proud of that. Why should customers buy aluminium windows and conservatories from Vellacine? They’ll be dealing with a financially strong, well established and highly regarded local company. Vellacine has been around a long time and we provide a fully comprehensive ten year guarantee with all our aluminium windows. As well as a full installation service, Vellacine offer an aluminium window replacement and repair service should any existing aluminium windows be damaged, show misting or just simply need a facelift.

Moody Cow Country Pub and Dining installs a Defibrillator Last December local lady, Alison Griffiths, suffered a heart attack and died in hospital a few days later. The whole Upton Bishop community was shocked and saddened to hear the awful news. Sadly no funding was available to buy a Defibrillator, so the Moody Cow decided to buy one and dedicate it to Alison’s memory. Her family were so moved that they decided to contribute £500 to the cost. It is lovely to see how this has brought one small community together. www.moodycowpub.co.uk
