Floors are also the most permanent feature, replaced less easily and less often than wall treatments or even upholstered furniture. Purchase and installation costs are substantial, so it’s important to select floors with an eye to the future. For many reasons, it’s best to consider investing in the best quality possible for your budget and that doesn’t necessarily mean buying the most expensive flooring. In estimating what you are willing to invest, ABOUT THE consider the life span of your floor AUTHOR covering. This will help give you Kristen Fencl is an a truer picture of award winning cost and what is

truly the most economical for you, your budget and your lifestyle. And by all means, consider using the services of a professional interior decorator to assist you in this important buying decision. Modern technology has made flooring more attractive, varied and practical. Such natural materials as wood, marble, stone, slate and quartz are still high in initial cost, but may not be in the long run because of their durability. Man-made flooring materials, meanwhile, such as porcelain, ceramic, vinyl and carpets of synthetic materials come in price ranges able to fit almost any reasonable budget.

Eye-catching area rugs Have you ever thought about the impact that an area rug — or any sort of flooring, for that matter — can have on your overall design scheme? Light colored floors tend to make your room appear larger, and conversely, darker, richer colors used in flooring will reduce your rooms apparent size. Here are some great ideas you might want to consider when purchasing new flooring or area rugs for your home or office: Unbroken expanses: Enlarge your space with a dramatic room-sized area rug. Create a focal point: Area rugs can make a dramatic room statement!

above: Natural materials like wood may be high

in initial cost, but may not be in the long run because of its durability. left: Juxtaposing colors with your carpet and furniture will set off a room in the right way.

Call attention to your furniture grouping: Wherever your area rug goes, so does the eye of the beholder. Area rugs — form and function: When placed over tile or hardwood floors, area rugs will warm up your room, and help with sound. At the end of the day, no matter what tactic you try and implement, area rugs are always great way to add texture and pops of color to a room.

painters, plumbers, architects and vendors; have access to infinite products and selections; save you time (and money); and receive trade discounts on furniture, fabric, lighting and materials. Talie Jane Interiors passes 100 percent of its discounts along to our clients. lth: What are a few of the newest trends in 2016 in Interior Design that homeowners should consider when eyeing an upgrade? tji: It’s all in the mix this year. So, forget about interior design “rules” and mix, mix, mix! 2016 is about a layered, eclectic look that reflects a wide variety of styles, all brought together in a personal, non-formulaic combination. Mix your upper and lower cabinets. Keep upper cabinets white or neutral for a timeless feel and be more playful with your lower cabinets. Try a different color or wood variety. Workhorse kitchen islands (now with sinks, induction stoves, additional seating and storage) should vary, too. If your

upper and lower cabinets are the same, make your island a different color. If they differ, match your island to your lower cabinets. Mix indoor and outdoor fabrics. With the durability of outdoor fabrics, more and more designers are bringing them inside where they are perfect for high-volume, high-traffic areas. Homes with children or pets can benefit most. The assortment of outdoor fabrics has increased dramatically and is no longer easily distinguished from indoor fabrics, making it a natural for this transition. Don’t say gold and silver can’t be friends. Mix your metals — gold, copper and brass with silver and chrome. The gold OR silver rule no longer applies. Just as in jewelry and fashion, metals can be mixed for a brilliantly beautiful look. Bathrooms are being treated more like the other fully designed, living spaces of the home. Mix in pieces you would incorporate in other rooms of your house: chandeliers, decorative wallpaper, furniture pieces and statement

mirrors. Why not? The bathroom is a primary room in the house — some of us spend more time there than others — and should reflect the same high-levels of design as the rest of the home. lth: What do you like about home décor and interior design when it comes to mountain homes, versus those in lower-elevation areas? tji: The natural mix of materials in mountain homes is so beautiful. The interest and texture you get from combining wood, metal and stone adds so much depth and dimension to design. Not to say this mix can’t be accomplished in a non-mountain home, but it just seems to have a more organic and raw sensibility here. Plus, the added layers of rugs, faux fur throws and hides add a complexity and grittiness. I strive to find a balance and harmony between the natural and rustic and the refined and sophisticated. And Tahoe is the perfect place for that.

rooms rather than converts into home offices, play rooms and the like. Designing a formal, dramatic dining space is so much fun.

Redesigning a kitchen can add value to a home.

lth : What is your favorite fresh design concept for 2016? tji : It’s something simple, but it’s meaningful. Families are tending to “ditch the tech” in living rooms and opting instead for a more calm respite where they can relax, read, spend quality time with friends and family and

take a break from the constant and obsessive “screen time.” For a designer, it means not having to find a place for the huge overbearing flat screen and instead focus on intimate conversation areas and meaningful gathering spaces. Dining rooms are also tending to actually be dining

YOUR HOME. YOUR VISION.

lth : Which area or section of a home do you prefer to work on when it comes to renovating? tji : When it comes to design, I prefer to work with my clients on their bedrooms and living/family rooms. These are usually the most lived-in spaces — one private and one public. However, when it comes to renovation, I prefer to tackle the biggies — kitchens and baths. These are the most popular areas for renovation and can add the “biggest buck” in terms of a return on investment.

MOUNTAIN LIVING

The design style and color scheme for a child’s room should be simple and based on the childís preferences.

THREE’S A CROWD A look at some fun and creative ideas for three of your home’s most important rooms

Child’s Play Decorating a child’s room can be both fun and challenging. Whether you are planning for a new arrival or updating your child’s room, thought and careful planning will make the project a success. The design style and color scheme for this room should be simple and based on the child’s preferences. Let him or her take part in choosing color and pattern. If your child wants a color you simply cannot live with, try to compromise with a shade variation you can accept. 10

LAKE TAHOE HOME | SEPTEMBER 2016

Window treatments can be simple. For example, you could select pleated or cellular shades for privacy — wood blinds, shutters for your under treatment. Then have some fun with valance options. How about a wood cornice? Cornices can be wallpapered with a fantastically whimsical border, or covered with a fabric featuring with light hearted cartoon characters. A wood cornice also allows you the option of extra accessorizing space! What a great place to display

a teddy bear, doll or race car collection! And be sure to have fun with your drapery “rods” when designing a child’s window treatment. Cleverly designed valances can be hung on hockey sticks, baseball bats or golf clubs With careful planning, all your ideas can work together to create a special place where your child can learn and grow. Delightful Dining Rooms Color psychology takes on added significance in the dining room because color, research clearly

shows, profoundly influences appetite. Did you know that changing a restaurant’s color scheme has been known to make a failing restaurant a success, despite their excellent food? Clear colors have the same stimulating effect on appetites as they do on atmosphere. Blue is particularly restful, encouraging leisurely meals. Full-strength red is exciting and to be used with discretion, but lighter shades, such as rose or pinkish hues, are pleasant to eat by. Yellow is it’s usual gay and sunny self. Neutrals tend to liven

up dining rooms with positive and effective color splashes. In the presence of food, stick to clear lighter shades of green. I also recommend avoiding shades of purple such as lavender and violet, as they tend to be appetite suppressants. Likewise, using drab colors in your dining room décor are rarely successful. Since most dining is done at night, it’s important to test colors under artificial light. It turns some colors muddy, and would ultimately make food look less appealing. Lighting should be flexible to allow different levels of light for many activities. A central chandelier, or larger pendant lights can be controlled with a dimmer switch. Homey Home Offices Computers, faxes, printers, modems — oh my! To keep up with today’s fast-paced lifestyles, many of us bring home our work. Having a special space set aside for our necessary equipment can bring on a multitude of design challenges. For some, the kitchen table is the perfect place to create your “home office.” For others, it’s important to have a space, set apart from the home activities, where you can get away and focus on the work at hand. Space — the right amount — becomes your first priority. A room that doubles as a guest

room and office might be the perfect place to begin creating your work space at home. Perhaps this room’s closet space could be reconfigured to allow for the necessary office equipment. By removing the shelves and clothes bar, you’d be surprised how much additional office space you might uncover! And when you close those closet doors in the evening your work is hidden from view. Many furniture manufacturers carry beautiful office armoires that are large enough to house computers. And the beauty of these stately furniture pieces is that they too can be closed when work is through. Large units are available, as well as space saving corner armoires. With a little creative space planning, you can come up with a workspace solution that doesn’t revolve around your kitchen table.

SCOTT CORRIDAN ELEVATES SLOPE-SIDE LIVING AT NORTHSTAR CALIFORNIA’S MOUNTAINSIDE STELLAR HOMES BY KATRINA PAZ PHOTOS BY VANCE FOX PHOTOGRAPHY

S

cott Corridan is no stranger to sophisticated mountain living. As one of the premier interior and event designers of the West, his elegant yet approachable work has been incorporated into a myriad of homes around Lake Tahoe — a subtle statement for discerning homeowners. Corridan was recently invited to be one of only two interior designers brought in to give Northstar’s new Mountainside Stellar Homes the idyllic modern mountain look. The properties, perched between the Ritz-Carlton and the Village at Northstar, consist of townhomes and residences. Designed by Bay Area-based Bohlin Cywinski Jackson (lead agency for Apple Inc. stores worldwide, including the iconic Fifth Avenue location) the Stellar Collection was developed to introduce a new parallel of mountainside luxury — cozily contemporary and thoughtfully progressive in design.

Scott Corridan Design’s work on the models, one residence and one townhome, was just unveiled this past February and has already received acclaim and praise for its bold and refreshing take on cabin life. The project was most recently featured in Martha Stewart Living and included his tips and insight on revitalizing classic designs. From the ground up, the Stellar Collection was tailored to a very specific clientele. Taking a 180-degree spin from the rustic cabins and chalets of the ‘80s, Stellar created homes for those wanting a mountain experience with a chic contemporary feel and modern conveniences. Jackson’s sleek and distinctive architecture instantly inspired Corridan. “There really isn’t anything like it in our region. There are some hidden gem holdouts from the international and modern movements in the 1950s and 60s, but there just isn’t anything like Stellar Mountainside in the Tahoe destination.” Mountainside at Northstar offers two options in real estate, a 2,200-square-foot Stellar townhome and a 3,450-square-foot residence. Both properties are ski-in/

ski-out and essentially steps away from Northstar’s multitude of activities and amenities. Corridan notes that both layouts are great options for homeowners and offer the Mountainside lifestyle, but cater to two different audiences at two different price points. The townhome is geared toward a younger, more active lifestyle. It appeals to a couple or young family from the Bay Area or a larger metropolitan area. The focus is on accommodating residents who are constantly on the go — skiing, hiking, biking, and exploring. The materials and pieces used were all about form and function. Everything incorporated was built for easy maintenance and wear and tear. Corridan accomplished this rugged sensibility while creating a cool, hip atmosphere. The sleek architecture and furniture are accented with

contemporary pops of color — blues, oranges, and yellows, reflecting the seasons of Tahoe. “The blue being representative of the sky and winter, and the pops of orange and yellow the spring and summer,” Corridan said. “It’s a youthful approach to the property.” The residence, which would appeal to more family-based buyers, has a more sophisticated and established character. Here, Corridan fused mountain flair with urban contemporary using classic furnishings with highend details. The colors are more muted with earth tones and a palette of browns and blues.

Corridan’s keen and experienced eye ironically turned him to Southern California and Palm Springs circa the 1960s to infuse life and modern accents into today’s contemporary mountain abode. He was also inspired by various pop art movements from the ‘60s and ‘70s. “There are very few places in our country that define midcentury modern like Los Angeles and Palm Springs,” he said. “The styles and iconic looks of these (specific) neighborhoods have been increasingly popular over the past 15 years. You can see it popping up more and

more in mainstream stores.” “So looking back to Palm Springs was an easy thing to do to drive design decisions. It was a risk, but the dressers, nightstands, credenzas and lamps we incorporated have gotten the most positive response of all.” The result was a show-stopping amalgamation of modern style and edge with vintage roots and historical timelessness. Additional elements that played into the homes were the uses of layering and incorporating the seasons of Lake Tahoe. He stresses that keeping up with the changes in the outside world can help keep the interior fresh. Fur blankets

Small accent pieces can have a definite impact, so changing out the colors and scents of candles with each season livens the space. the drive from San Francisco to Truckee is about 4 hours. But anyone who’s ever tried to get into Truckee on a Friday after work, or out of the Bay Area for that matter, will tell you that traffic can add hours and a lot of stress onto the drive.

You could fly, but connecting flights can take up to the same amount of time as driving, and that’s without the added time waiting to go through airport security. Enter SurfAir, a company whose founders must have thought, “There’s got to be a better way.” Now, after three

years of business, the customer experience remains a top priority. “We’re ultimately giving time to our members,” said SurfAir CEO Jeff Potter. SurfAir is kind of like the Netflix of air travel — if Netflix offered to hand-deliver movies and park your car for you. For a monthly fee of $1,950,

SurfAir members can fly an unlimited number of trips among the company’s 13 destinations. Currently, they fly to 12 locations throughout California and also to Las Vegas. Starting this winter, their service will also include trips to Europe. “This is a shared use model, so there are other members

And though the company was initially founded with business travel in mind, Potter said he’s noticed a trend over the last few years. “What we’ve seen over the years, over the winter and summer, is a leisure aspect to our business,” said Potter. “People like to fly to Truckee during the week and on the weekends.” SurfAir began offering flights to Truckee in 2014, and has grown significantly since then. “We started out just flying from San Carlos to Truckee,” said Potter. SurfAir now offers flights from three Bay Area locations to Truckee. And though Truckee-Tahoe service began as 7 round trip

flights a week from the Bay, the company now offers 20 weekly round trips as well as an additional summer offering of 5 weekend round trips — and that’s just between the Bay Area and Truckee. SurfAir has increased its number of planes from 3 to 12 since the business started, and their membership base has grown from 150 members to more than 3,000. Potter said that Truckee is a successful yet unique market for the company. That’s because while SurfAir’s membership base consists of a lot of professionals who travel for work, those who fly into Truckee are also interested in taking trips for leisure. He said that about half of the company’s business comes from corporate memberships, and that those agreements are tailor-made to fit the other company’s travel needs. “So many companies have different needs,” he said. “We’re very fortunate that we can customize.”

TASTE OF TAHOE

Resort at Squaw Creek’s stateof-the-art hydroponic system has given the resort 100 percent sustainability in terms of herbs and micro-greens.

SWEET AND SUSTAINABLE Resort at Squaw Creek grows farm-to-menu program with state-of-the-art rooftop garden

can ’ t talk right now ,” says Tim Hmay, overcome by a smack of peppery zest as he gnaws on a freshly plucked leaf of arugula. A few chews later, the Executive Chef at the Resort at Squaw Creek can only muster one word after the flavor fades: “Fantastic.” He’s not kidding. I’m getting a tour of the Resort at Squaw Creek’s new state-ofthe-art hydroponic system and on-property rooftop garden called

Rooftop Roots, and my taste buds are stimulated as Hmay hands me sample after sample of microgreens, sending a parade of flavors across my tongue — from the subtle (celery) to the strong (horseradish). “We are 100 percent sustainable in-house in terms of herbs and micro-greens,” Hmay says. “We’re not buying any herbs or microgreens anymore. Every herb that is used here is grown here — and we go through a lot of herbs here. “And the flavor profile is outstanding.”

Simply put, with the resort’s fresh approach to sourcing its produce on-property, Hmay and his fellow chefs are bolstering their recipes with a variety of sustainable and seasonal vegetables and herbs — from lettuce and tomatoes to rosemary and basil. Rooftop Roots, a 1,500-squarefoot garden, was planted on top of Sweet Potatoes Deli during the spring of 2016. The produce from the garden will be incorporated into menu selections for the

resort’s Six Peaks Grille, Sandy’s Pub, Cascades, Sweet Potatoes Deli and group/corporate meetings at the hotel. And this, Hmay says, is only the beginning for Rooftop Roots. “We are looking at expanding this full table to three tables,” says Hmay, pointing to rows of bok choy, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, jalapeño peppers and more. “This whole process is just a baby in terms of what we’re doing and how far we want to go with it. The chefs are pretty excited.”

THIS WHOLE PROCESS IS JUST A BABY IN TERMS OF WHAT WE’RE DOING AND HOW FAR WE WANT TO GO WITH IT. THE CHEFS ARE PRETTY EXCITED.”- TIM HMAY, EXECUTIVE CHEF AT THE RESORT AT SQUAW CREEK Planting the Seed The concept of an on-property garden at Resort at Squaw Creek first began a few years ago when the resort began growing its own herbs in small garden for a garden-toglass drink menu at Six Peaks. (For example, Six Peaks mixologist Tam French uses fresh garden grown mint in her Tahoe Tea cocktail.) For André Priemer, general manager of the Resort at Squaw Creek, it seemed only natural to let the garden program, well, grow. “We started to dream big and we wanted to be sustained not only for our drinks, but also for our food,” he said. “We’ve been very successful, and we are now actually able to produce enough herbs to be self-sustaining, which is unheard of for a large-sized operation like ours — we are a four-diamond hotel with 405 rooms.” Priemer said the resort anticipates it will produce an excess of vegetables and herbs, so the resort is

partnering with Tahoe Food Hub and plans to sell the surplus from the 1,500-square-foot garden to the nonprofit organization. In addition, Priemer said, the resort would be working with the local school district — Truckee Tahoe Unified School District — to introduce them to hydroponic gardening. “We want to increase our green footprint and we did that very successfully,” Priemer said. “And we continue to do so. Our ownership is very supportive of it and will continue to support our efforts in growing our green footprint on our property and in Lake Tahoe.”
