Extra Credit Growth Mindset Activity - The Distraction Dare

This extra credit growth mindset activity -- The Distraction Dare -- was borne out of the realization that students (and adults) are having a really hard time adjusting to the increasing distractions of social media and personal technology. This activity dares students to turn off and unplug on purpose to see what could happen and what they could learn about themselves.

DIRECTIONS: Since it takes a month to develop a habit, students will spend twenty-eight days focusing on getting rid of the things that distract them most so they can focus on their schoolwork. It’s okay if they miss a day or two, but they don’t get any extra credit until they reach twenty-eight days. Students will initiate this entire process with their parents.

You will ...

(1) Go talk to your parent about helping you get rid of distractions.
(2) Choose the item/technology/event/activity in life that MOST KEEPS you from getting your responsibilities done.
(3) Each night ask your parent to hold your TOP DISTRACTION until you return and show your homework done for the night. NO LYING ABOUT YOUR HOMEWORK.
(4) Have your parent sign off that you accomplished your dare for that night.
(5) After all twenty-eight days are completed, type a 1-page journal of your experience and what you learned about yourself. (12 font, Times New Roman, Double-spaced)
