WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William & Mary men's soccer team tallied twice in the first five minutes and never looked back in a 4-0 victory over in-state rival VCU at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field Wednesday. Senior
Jeff Bombelles, sophomore
Ryder Bell, and freshmen
Reeves Trott as well as
Julian Ngoh scored in the victory. With the win, the Tribe improves to 9-6-2, while the Rams drop to 5-8-3.
Just 18 seconds into the match, Bombelles put W&M up with his second goal of season. Junior
William Eskay's bullet shot from the right corner was saved, but the rebound bounced right to Bombelles, who turned and fired a shot off the goalkeeper and the ball trickled across the line. The marker pushed W&M out to an early 1-0 lead.
Four minutes later the Tribe struck again. Freshman
Hristo Bustamante found senior
Reilly Maw on the far side of the field. Â Maw lofted a pass into the center of the box where Bell met the ball in the air, and headed it over the outstretched hands of the Rams keeper and into the top right corner of the net. Bell's team-leading ninth goal of the season made it 2-0.
The Tribe continued its first half dominance and put away its third maker of the night in the 42nd minute. Redshirt sophomore
Christian Jones centered a pass to Trott, who cut around a Rams defender. The rookie fired a shot into the mid-right of the goal, which was his fifth tally of the year.
VCU only mustered one shot in the first 45 minutes. That came in the 19th minute when Simond Kargbo clanked one off of the crossbar and out of play.
The Rams put three shots on frame in the second stanza, but redshirt senior
Mac Phillips was up for the challenge on all three. Joseph Gonella had the first look in the 58th minute, followed by a 60th minute chance by Ryo Shimazaki. The last chance came in the 88th minute when Brandon Eaton shot was stopped by Phillips.
W&M added the exclamation point with a tally in the 87th minute. Sophomore
Marcel Berry sent a feed to the lower right of six where Ngoh was stationed. From a sharp angle, the freshman planted his shot in the lower left corner of the net. Ngoh's first career goal gave the Tribe a 4-0 lead.
The Tribe finished the night with 14-8, including a 9-3 lead in shots on-goal. Sophomore
John Fuqune and Bell fired a team-high two shots apiece.
Phillips, who made his first start of the season, recorded his first shutout of the season and the team's sixth clean sheet of the season. He made all three saves in his 13th career shutout.
W&M closes out the regular season with its final home match of the season as they host Drexel on Saturday, Oct. 29. Kickoff between the Tribe and Dragons is set for 7 p.m.
