RIP Pimpact. I can proudly say I've watched him from the start in State of Play on Woongjin Stars --> Axiom --> SKT --> Retirement.

Impact was youngest of them, yes? And still retired, which is weird. I thought the old ones retire first.

But glad to hear so many still try to continue. Dark and soO go go!

  • Zoun and Dream are 19.

  • Sorry, Impact, Dark and MyuNgSik are 21.

  • INnoVation is 23.

  • soO and Classic are 24.

The older players have had more success and hopefully have some savings that will keep them going for a while (until military service?), and they probably have more fans that will make streaming more profitable as well.

It's sad to see some of the other players retire, but it makes sense if they're not already good enough at another game to find a team like MyuNgSik.

Lol I just now realized sorry is a players name. I thought he was sorry that impact retired

I think the best of the best remains and the semibest is most likely to retire. What's semibest btw?

The old ones have some Money saved.

The Young ones don´t have much Money saved, neither did they win much yet, plus suddenly there is no more Team houses so they would have to look after everything themselves whereas in a teamhouse everything was taken care of.

u/mmr_poll avatar

Obviously, strongest players stay 'cause they already achieve something significant and can get some extra cash (i.e. soO is streaming). The rest players don't see future for them in sc2.

As in, Classic, Innovation and the others are going to keep playing as independents? Or SKT is still supporting them for now

u/Shiroi_Kage avatar

Let's create a crowd-funding temporary support Patreon. I think if Blizzard lifts the region locking, there will be Korean teams springing up trying to take advantage of the international viewership.

It's really sad that such world class players are screwed over. I think their decision to stick with the game despite its uncertain future shows their passion. But then again, they invested years of their life into starcraft and switching games is not very feasible. I hope it pays off for them.

the pros who were good at brood war before kespa switch seem to be switching back where as the ones who has way better careers in sc2 seem to be sticking with it

u/fixurgamebliz avatar

I don't understand how they're being screwed over? People the world over are passionate about all sorts of things and don't get to make a living off of it. If there's no market for what you're doing, there's no cash. Simple as that.

Obviously I wish there was 100x as much money in starcraft and that all these guys could make a living wage + the teamhouse perks and everyone could make bank, but that's just not reality. It sucks, but they're not entitled to it.

u/POTATO_IN_MY_MOUTH avatar

If they neglected their college/university education in order to prioritize SC it can really set them behind in a country like South Korea, where education itself is highly competitive. "Study hard, get a good job" is like a mantra over there.

u/fixurgamebliz avatar

Yeah, I mean sure that sucks, but again, that's not getting screwed... that's taking a risk and not succeeding. I don't know much about the Korean university system, but I'd think they can get a delayed start on their education.

u/2yph0n avatar

Here is the thing, StarCraft was SUBSIDIZED by the Korean government. They had an Airforce team along with it.

So the risk, at the time, was relatively small.

But then SC2 didn't learn from BW, which made it unpopular among Koreans, thus made Airforce ACE to disband.

So you can absolutely blame Blizzard in this case.

SC2 didn't "not learn" it's called "mobas are way easier and causal friendly than RTS"

If they are still banned in international events next year, its an absolute disgrace.
