Cutting Edges of Alternative Sexualities

The Psychobiology of Kink, the Psychology of Consent, the Interest Discrepancy in Relationships with Dr. Richard Sprott & Dr. Anna Randall

A special 2 day-long (Friday and Saturday Dec. 2-3rd) workshop on working with kink sexualities and consensual non-monogamies, with a focus on mind-body interactions around BDSM, issues around consent and how alternative sexuality communities negotiate consent, and the dynamics of discrepancy in sexuality interests in people’s committed relationships with others.

Objectives:

  • Discuss the issues around consent as a psychological process
  • Outline the biological aspects of pain and pleasure perception and experiences
  • Identify three aspects of competent care in working with kink-oriented clients
  • Articulate several reasons and motivations for engaging in kink behavior
  • Apply concepts of competent care with kink-oriented clients to specific types of commonly presented problems
Anna Randall, MSW, DHS, MPH is TASHRA's Executive Director. She is a clinical sexologist and sex therapist in the San Francisco Bay Area. Anna has over 25 years of experience in both the private and public sectors of health and sexuality and career focus is on the nexus of healthcare and sexual health. She lectures nationally to both professionals and consumers on the special mental health needs of sexual minorities and research focuses on relational power dynamics, self actualization and attachment. Her busy therapy practices in SF and Silicon Valley exemplify the vast interests and personalities of the kink community. 
Richard Sprott, PhD is TASHRA's Chief Research Scientist. He is a developmental psychologist, researcher, and educator at a number of Bay Area universities, including UC Berkeley, CAL State Hayward and CIIS. His research focuses on the interconnections of social development and language acquisition, sociolinguistics, and the impact of stigma and prejudice on interactions between counselors/therapists and members of stigmatized groups. Richard is also a founding member of CARAS - the Community Academic Consortium for Research on Alternative Sexualities.
