UPC to host ‘Stranger Things’ event in Baker

Students will be able to fight demogorgons on their way to class on Tuesday.

The University Program Council will host a Stranger Things inspired event on the third floor of Baker University Center from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The event is free for students.

Stranger Things is a Netflix original series centered around a group of children who try to locate their friend who is suspected of being kidnapped. The series is a science fiction thriller that alludes to many different 80s films, such as E.T. and Stand By Me.

Jen Grubb, the creative events executive for UPC, said she decides the themes for events by appealing to what people like and are familiar with.

“Well there’s obviously all the hype about Stranger Things lately,” Grubb, a senior studying communication studies, said. “Everybody knows what it is even if (they) haven’t watched it, (they) have heard of it — (they) know what it is. And the sci-fi aspect goes along with Halloween really well.”

Hannah Hershfield, the public relations executive for UPC, said the organization has done events similar to the upcoming event in the past.

“We’ve done other events based on shows,” Hershfield, a senior studying communication studies, said. “We’ve done Parks and (Recreation), so it’s kind of like taking a fun twist to a show and making it an event.”

The event is designed for students to stop by on their way to and from classes, Grubb said. It will include fan Eggo Waffle bar, alluding to the character Eleven’s favorite snack, and chocolate pudding that the main characters stole from their school’s refrigerator in the last episode of season one.

Grubb said there will be a Stranger Things season two prediction table where fans of the show voice what they think will happen in the next season.

Rosalie McCullough, a junior studying outdoor recreation and education, said she will watch season two of Stranger Things.

“I thought (the series) was entertaining but it was kind of weird though,” she said. “It was definitely very dramatic.”

There will be a prize wheel people can spin in order to win t-shirts with the series title and the phrase “What about Barb?” and posters, Grubb said. An inflatable bowling set with pictures of demogorgons — a monster featured in the role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons — will be set up for students to defeat the creatures. The Ohio University Magician’s Association will also be performing magic tricks, she added.

“I think the goal for any of our events are just to provide a fun atmosphere for OU students,” Hershfield said. “With this event it’s just really for anyone to stop in Baker and enjoy a fun, free event based on the show Stranger Things.”
