Darkness Within
I feel it happening. The pressure builds. My skin prickles. And the only thing that tames the darkness, getting it back to resting peacefully inside me, is to unleash it. I have to let it wreak havoc, and I quite enjoy the mayhem. Analeigh Price comes into my life and does the one thing I despise—question me about my past. Analeigh (Leigh) wasn't looking for a relationship. But Donovan intrigued her with his mysterious persona. She was determined to peel into his past but risked digging too deep where she shouldn't.
Donovan's dark past defined him as an adult. He was detached and ruthless in meeting his goal. Still, he showed that he was capable of feeling something more.
Analeigh was someone fun and free. But sometimes she appeared to be overly pushy.
The story had potential, but I think the execution could be better. I had hard time trying to relate to the characters. There was a lack intrigue especially that the narrator explained pretty much every single actions he took. As a reader, I want to be able to make my own discovery along the way. Besides, I wasn't surprised by the revelations.
Good thing the sex was hot lol! Their encounters are mostly short but intense. I also like how it ended.
Darkness Within is a journey into the mind of a man in thumping down his dark urges. It would appeal to readers looking for non romantic dark read.

After only reading one book from this author before (War), I wasn't sure what to expect. All I knew was that I enjoyed her writing so much that I had to give her another try. No Regrets! Darkness Within was a twisted story that kept me on edge right to the end. I loved how it was phrased as a romance when it was most definitely NOT romantic. It lulled me into a false sense of security and warmth, rooting for the unlikely couple, surprising me with my gullibility and my assumption that this story would be predictable in any way. It quickly made me learn to expect the unexpected.
The hero, Donovan, who was no hero, was an intriguingly multi-layered character who offered many reasons to go along with his thirst for vengeance. How can you argue with his pain? He gave truth to the argument of Nature vs. Nurture and being a product of your environment. Poor kid. I gloried in his bloodlust and felt satisfaction for every name ticked off of his list. I wanted to fight his enemies for him, beat down anyone who betrayed the little bit of trust he had left, and hug him to give him a glimpse of light. But Donovan wasn't interested in escaping his darkness. He only wanted to learn to better navigate, making his shadows become such a part of him that they would be indistinguishable from the rest of him. No more hiding. No more pretending. It's messed up, but I wanted that for him. A life where he was able to have the freedom to be who he needed to be.
Murder isn't a joke, but the way Donovan tells it, I couldn't help my chuckles. Guy's a riot. Isabel Lucero won me over with this story. With its roundabout turns and spirals leading me into a maze of mayhem, I actually didn't want the book to end. I'm hoping the author has more of this story to tell.

I felt like it ended just when it was beginning .. really liked some of the twists that I did not see coming . Just wished that we had more of how the book ended .

It’s been a while since I’ve had the chance to sit down and read a book from start to finish without interruption, new baby in the house and all, but once I started Darkness Within, I could not put it down. Now, I do like my books a little on the darker side and with this one, Isabel nailed it right on the head. It was just the right amount of darkness to go along with some hot, sinful, sex and lots of mysterious twists and turns.
If you don’t know, I have been a huge fan of Isabel Lucero right from the very beginning of her writing career, (The Secrets That We Keep is still one of my favorite books) and it has been amazing to watch her cultivate and develop her craft. On to the book…. the main character in this book is complex, mysterious, and so sinfully hot that he makes you wish Isabel would write you into the story. There is an air about him that draws you in and makes you connect with him and the story itself. Even though he’s a “bad guy”, he was still the character I found myself rooting for throughout the book. Most books start with a long drawn out prologue, now sometimes, its a must but in this book Isabel just drops you right into the story, right in the action! It totally sucked me right there and didn’t let go till the very last page.
I think the best part about this book is that even though it is a dark read, it still is mysterious and hot, the darkness does not overpower and you can connect with story that is being told about the characters. There is so much more I want to say about this book and all the characters, but to give away any of the twists and turns of this book would be criminal! You really need to read it for yourself and meet THE Donovan James and the Darkness Within.

I was super excited to hear that Isabel Lucero was writing a dark thriller!! I dove into this book on release day.
Donovan is a man who is seeking revenge on any and all who turned his life into darkness. Growing up in unfavorable foster homes where anything and everything bad that can happen, happened to him. Now as an adult, he is going after all who did him wrong.
Never feeling comfortable enough to have friends or a girl friend, Donovan has found friendship in a coworker Nick. The only friend he has had. One night while out drinking with Nick and other coworkers, Donovan meets Analeigh. She is trying to do the one thing that Donovan hates...she questions him about his past.
While there are some steamy scenes in this book, that is not the focus. The focus is on revenge and will Donovan get the revenge he so desperately needs to tame the darkness from coming out 24/7.

I received an ARC for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book. I do love a good dark book and this didn't disappoint. A story that gets you thinking, although I did have a good notion for who was doing what! that being said, it didn't put me off. This also had a good ending.

Man...Isabel NEVER disappoints and once again, she has nailed this story. I think what amazes me the most is she has proven she can write different kinds of romance. I highly recommend ANY books by her. With that said, onto the review of the book.
This book is on the darker side but not so dark that you question yourself as a human because you are reading something so morbid and enjoying it. It was dark in the form that someone has been through so much pain and suffering that darkness is their only reality. Throughout this book I found myself thinking of all different scenarios and I thought I knew what was going on. Yes...Some things weren't a surprise and I don't think they were meant to be but hold onto your seat because she throws a wrench in there and I LOVED IT!!!!! Thank you Isabel for another FANTASTIC read!!!

The most awful thing about reading this book is knowing that there are some foster parents out there that are like the ones mentioned in this book. Just knowing that no every child in this situation is having a better childhood than they would if they were with their actual parent(s) just breaks my heart. While reading this I knew Leigh was connected somehow but I just wasn't sure where and so many scenarios played out in my head. Let me tell you....I didn't see it coming. I also questioned Miguel and you will find out about him. This book is a must read. One thing is for sure, I never want to be on Donovan's bad side.

Awwwwwww hell! I'm seriously setting here wondering what the fuck I just read. It was without a doubt hot in true Isabel fashion. Twisted? Oh hell yes. Dark? Yep. Delicious? Mmmhmm. All of that dark twisted goodness couldn't keep me away from this book. Holy hell it was amazing! Isabel I want to live in your mind... it's my kind of fucked up. And you live where it's warm... BONUS!
Okay... back to this book. Hot damn! The twist's turns ups and down's had me all consumed. I honestly couldn't figure out where this book was going. Did not even know at first if I would like Donovan. Well guess what??? I fucking loved him. A LOT! He's dark, broody, sexy, maybe even a little cocky. BUT he can back it up.
I'm not going to spill the beans about this book. I'm just gonna say read it. Read it ASAP! Isabel is a phenominal writer and I love her words. When needing a book to escape reality and just get lost... this is definitely one of them. This is one of the best books I've read all year. Don't miss it!!!!

When I read the blurb for this novel, I just HAD to read it. I wasn't sure what I was in store for but I knew that Isabel Lucero would blow my mind. Boy was this novel amazing. It was dark, gritty, violent and sexy as hell. It wasn't a hearts and flowers type of novel. There is romance yes, but it isn't a prevalent theme throughout the story. The novel predominantly deals with the heartbreaking and disturbing past of Donovan James and the modern day "darkness" and pain that resides in him as a result.
In addition, I loved that the author stayed true to Donovan's character. We didn't get a sudden 180 degree shift in him, where he turned "happy" (and dare I say normal?) or into a sappy lovesick person. No. He stayed the same. He was still a violent and vengeful man dealing with what happened to him as a child.
Although, I did find the ending to be sudden and a bit rushed, all in all, I enjoyed this novel and look forward to more from this author. ~ Ratula, 4 stars

WOW!! That's all I can say after reading this book.
When I found out that Isabel was writing this type of book, I was so excited to see what she would do. Let me tell you, she did NOT disappoint! I haven't read a lot of dark books, but from the first chapter, I was hooked.
Donovan...oh my! He is so dark and twisted, yet sexy as hell at the same time :) We find out why he is the way he is and what causes that darkness within him. You do not want to get on his bad side, that's for sure. He meets Analeigh and we start to see something change in him. The two of them together were hot as f***.
There were times where I thought one thing and was totally blown away when it was something totally different. That's how you know you are reading a damn good book! The twists?! Isabel knocked it out of the park!!

The monster and I are friends....
He's let's me live my life as Donovan James for many years, being ok with only coming to the surface from time to time however I enjoy the time he gets to play.
Darkness within is a dark read with twist and turns told in Donovan's pov, he's a serial killer with a purpose but his list keeps growing.
Donovan has an abused childhood, and a list he intends to complete.
Darkness Within has its hot moments but it's not a romance like I normally read it focuses more on Donovans task, it's a steady paced read and well written.
Unfortunately not enough relationship content for me but those who love more of a read with the crime and suspense dominating the plot will enjoy.

Darkness Within by Isabel Lucero is dark, twisted, and hot with a capital T! This is not a love story, but rather of vengeance and retribution.
Donovan James is tall, dark, and sexy. He is a dangerous man, one you don't want on your bad side! His past has haunt him, the beast inside him wants blood for what he had to go through as a child. And he will have it!
What he doesn't expect is meeting this girl that brings him to his knees.
I really enjoyed this book. Huge twists I did not see coming. I was biting my nails wondering what was going to happen next! If your looking for a book that will leave you speechless, read Darkness Within.

Nature or nurture, are we the result of our genetics or our upbringing? Donovan James doesn't really know where he comes from but he knows the monster that lives within his skin was born from the suffering he has endured. Passed from one bad situation to a worse one until he managed to break free, he hides the monster under his everyday mask of normalcy. Pretending to fit in, pretending to be normal whilst the best rages against the cage he keeps it captive in. The monster is sated by the blood it sheds, the lives of those that created him feed his hunger for revenge yet he is always starved, desperate for more. When Donovan nears the end of his list will he let the monster lose or can he successfully tame the monster within? A serial killer or just a man with a mission to right the wrongs he has endured, the darkness within wants to be unleashed.
This is a well written clever book that leans towards the dark side and is definitely not filled with sunshine or rainbows. Death and retribution is a harsh reality for Donovan who is struggling to keep his two realities separate. Knowing the veneer is wearing thin can he complete his list before its too late? He is a complicated character who has one hell of a tragic background. The woman he entangles himself with seems to connect with his humanity and his monster yet she isn't all she appears to be. His best friend Nick is his anchor and I hope one day he may get his happily ever after as I feel there is more to his story. The plot develops in a fast paced and easy to read way that keeps the reader engaged and on the edge of your seat. It's enthralling, tantalising and steamy too; a perfect combination. This is my introduction to this author and I would highly recommend you one click today.

Darkness Within by Isabel Lucero was quite different from what I expected it to be when I read the Blurb. I guess Darkness can be interpreted in different ways and somehow my mind was set on a another way to interpret it.
So I am not really sure what to think... I liked the writing style of this author but I was never sure if it was intentional that the male lead felt so detached from what he was doing. It never felt like revenge but more like cold calculation and considering the backgrounds and the subject- I would have expected more emotions with his deeds. But maybe it is a good thing …
This will never be my genre as there was a TV series that directly jumped my mind that I always refused to watch (I will not mention it here because the title will give away to much of the plot – but I am sure most persons that read this book will be able to imagine which series I am referring to)
Personally, I felt it was twisted and it will have triggers for people I am sure … but interesting enough the only thing that felt dark about it to me was the romance that was nestled hidden in the pages … or more the sidelines of the story.
It is a well written story and I am sure that lovers of this dark and twisted genre will love this book.
Oh and yeah … I admit after finishing the book I will never look at my colleagues at work the same way … because really … you never know what hides behind the surface...

Oh my goodness...I've always loved Isabel Lucero's writing, but this...this dark and dangerous and oh so sexy Darkness Within was fantastic!
Donovan James is a man most of us would love to meet in a dark alleyway..tall, tatted, sexy...and then once we could see into his eyes, you'd see the flat, humorless orbs and wonder just how dangerous he is. How long can his mask last...
~We all have dark thoughts, but normal people have something in their brains that stop them from acting on those thoughts. I'm lacking whatever it is that keeps you from being immoral.
The author writes a couple of wonderfully complex characters. Such depth and emotion (or lack thereof as is supposed to be the case)
Once Donovan meets Analeigh things begin to change...and the story starts to take all sorts of twists.
I was absolutely engrossed in this story the ENTIRE time I was reading it. There was suspense, intrigue, and the sexy was awesome. I swear I could feel his hand around my throat!
Freaking awesome.
~The transition is different now. I'm no longer concerned with keeping the darkness trapped in a cage that hides deep within my soul. I AM the darkness. It's just a flip of the switch. Lights out.
Honestly I don't wanna tell you anything else about the story..I really want you to read it for yourself and see just how freaking great it is...and I SOOOOO hope she comes up with a sequel!
It was absolutely awesome, and Isabel Lucero writes a dark romance just as well as she writes a hopeful or sexy one!

I have to say wow… I loved this book!!! I thought that it was extremely well written and the story had so many twists to it which I absolutely love in a book. I couldn’t predict the storyline at all which created angst in many parts, again something I love. I just wanted to be locked away in a room and to not be disturbed until I had finished reading the book. I don’t normally read books that are on the darker side but this book had me hooked from the very first page and even though Donovan (the main character) has a lot of darkness within him, Isabels amazing writing had me understanding and even sympathising his actions. An amazing 5* read.

Wow! At every turn you're hit with a holy crap moment! It hurts my heart to think of Donovan as a child and everything he went through. His revenge is justified and well deserved to those who hurt him. It proves that there are so many that can't be trusted. He meets Analeigh and tries to actually have a relationship. But things go horribly wrong and he's left no choice to deliver his actions against those that have wronged him. Definitely a great read that will keep you wondering until the very end!

WOW...Isabel...WOW!!! This is the first book that I have read by Isabel Lucero and she did not disappoint in any way, shape or form. This story has everything that I was looking for to keep me wanting more. It had suspense, drama, a dark side but not to dark, and a hot male lead!! I want more of Donovan!! I really hope there is a second book in the future so we can see what happens to Donovan. Great job Isabel!! I would highly recommend this book to everyone!!

Don't go into reading this thinking that there's any kind of romance or love story. This is told entirely from Donovan's POV and what a dark ride it was. To be in the mind of a person seeking vengeance through murder of all that participated in creating a horrific childhood for him, this was gritty and dark with twists that will keep you completely engrossed in the story. Hats off to Ms. Lucero for another awesome read!

Dark, intense, and devilishly hot! I was sucked right in by this action packed, thrilling roller coaster ride.
I loved the premise of the story, the unexpected twists and turns and the main character Donovan.
His demons and his past make him who he is and what he does makes you affirm the saying "Don't get mad, get even".

WOW!!!!
This is the first book I have read by this author and it won't be the last.
This book was deep, dark and intense. You are gripped from the beginning. The story never let's you go. I loved the twists and turns in Donovan's journey. The deep dark feeling he keeps locked up, unless he is doing what he does best. Sex and murder.

Donovan is not your typical hero! He has alot of Darkness in him. That being said you cant help but feel for him! I loved how this book sucked me in from the first paragraph and did not let me go till the very end. Fans of dark romances will love this one! Totally a winner for me

I am giving this book 5 stars because I absolutely loved it, but I am not so sure that I should. Given the subject matter. This is a dark and gritty story, that is graphic but not to the point of making the readers squeamish, but definitely gets it’s point across.
If dark reads aren’t your thing, then I would highly suggest passing this book over. Now even though I said this book is dark, and it is, it’s not as dark as many others out there. It is completely different from anything I have read by Isabel Lucero before. That in it’s self tells me what a fantastic writer she is. She has the ability to give her readers different and unique stories every time she releases a new book. She definitely stepped outside the box on this one ;)
I’m not going to talk about the storyline at all, because this is a book that you need to go into blind. Just know that the twist and turns of this story will knock you off your feet. She threw some wild things at me. Some things were obvious, but she also shocked me in some spots. I didn’t see those coming!! This story will suck you in from the beginning and hold you until the very last word!! I couldn’t put this down.
I will tell you this, this book is not your fluffy romance story. It also isn’t the typical love story. Don’t go into this thinking it will be like other New Adult romance books you have read before, because it is nothing like that. Yes there is romance, but it is definitely not the focus of this story.
I really don’t know what else to say about this book, except that I thought it was FANTASTIC. Now I don’t know what that says about me, but I really don’t care. I loved that it was told from only Donovan’s POV. I love being in the man’s head :) I know this is a book I will be reading again in the future.
So if you are a fan of Isabel’s you don’t want to miss this piece of her work. She will knock you off your seats. If you are a fan of the dark and gritty story with some romance, lies, betrayals, and a lot of twists and turns, then you don’t want to miss this book!!! This is one for my Best of 2016 list!!!

Holy smoke this is the first book that I read from this author and I love it 😻. Holy cow I’m really not into dark story but when I ran into this book on my Facebook page that I read what it was about it had me curious so I decided to read it. And oh boy I’m so glad I did.
Oh how I felt in love with Donovan James, he is one sexy bad ass man, full of dark thoughts. I love it how he think about doing something and actually goes and do it. He is sexy dark and mysterious, he love to bee alone he don’t like people but he do like one person that he considered him as a true friend and it’s his coworker Nick.
Donovan has been through hell while growing up that’s why he turned out to be the way he is. The sex scene where hot as hell, the story has a twist to it, I kind of figured that out almost to the end the way that Anali was always acting with him. I’m glad she deserved what she got at the end.
I love the ending I hope there’s more of this story cause I would love to know how Donovan and Jayden would be. I want more.

Wow!
This book definitely had more heat than I was expecting. Not complaining though. I really enjoyed the story. I definitely related in the sense we all have a dark side we generally don't act on but oddly helps us get through life sometimes. The characters were very well written and developed. You really see how they are changing as the time goes on and circumstances change. Definitely an amazing read.

This is the first book by Isabel Lucero that I have read. I was pleasantly surprised to find the book one of suspense, with heat mixed into it. I enjoyed the characters and how the story played out. It is a thrill to read when the leads accomplish their dark desires. I will be looking forward to a sequel with Donovan and Jayden. Kudos to the author!

Oh! So suspenseful!!! This book is full of "OMG! WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN?!?!?!" moments. It really was 'A Fun Wild Ride' of a book! Props for the development of the main character! Donovan is a complex character but someone that you can't help but stand behind.
