A competition will be held at MU COS on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 7 pm in room S276 as part the celebration for the National Earth Science Week. There will be 3 levels of competition: 1) High school students 2) College Students (non-geology majors, and 3) College Students (Geology Majors). A high school may enter one or more teams to represent it. Marshall University Departments can enter one or teams, although college students can form teams independently if they wish. College students from other schools are also welcome.
Contestants must register as teams of 3. In each match, questions will be posed to 3 teams at a time. Members on each team will take their turn fielding questions on a variety of Earth Science topics (see Table). The contestant that rings their bell first will have the opportunity to answer the question. If they answer correctly their team will be awarded 1 point. If they answer incorrectly, the remaining 2 teams can compete for a chance to answer, again by ringing their bell first. The first team that reaches 10 points will win the match and advance to the next round. The overall winning team at each level will win a $ 100 gift certificate; each second place team will win a $ 50 gift certificate.
Teams can register in advance by emailing their names, competitive level (ex. high school, college non-geology, college geology to
martinor@marshall.edu. Onsite registration at Marshall University Science Building S276 will be available from 6:00-6:45 pm on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
