Southampton: Bertrand and Davis feature for national sides

Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand and Steven Davis were both present for their respective sides last night, with mixed results.

With Danny Rose still out injured, Ryan Bertrand continued his stint as first-choice left-back for England last night, as the Three Lions secured qualification for next year’s World Cup in Russia.

Gareth Southgate’s side are undefeated so far in Group F with yesterday’s victory being their seventh win from nine games, thanks to Harry Kane’s injury time winner.

The loss means Slovenia remain fourth in the standings, a point behind Slovakia who have 15 points themselves. The former will need to win their final game in order to be within a chance of sealing qualification via the playoffs.

Meanwhile Steven Davis captained his Northern Ireland side as they lost to Germany once again. Second place in the group had already been cemented with Azerbaijan nine points behind them going into the encounter with the world champions.

Sebastian Rudy scored early to set the tone of the evening, with the once-linked-to-Southampton Sandro Wagner doubling the away side’s lead with just 21 minutes gone.

Bayern Munich’s versatile man Joshua Kimmich made it three late on, but Josh Magennis was able to add a consolation goal late on – something incredibly bittersweet for Michael O’Neill’s team.

The Northern Irish have faced Germany three times now in the space of 16 months, with last night’s encounter being the first in which Davis and co. have been able to break down the German’s defence and score.

Today Manolo Gabbiadini could make an appearance for Italy as they face Macedonia, whilst Maya Yoshida’s Japan side are currently drawing 1-1 with New Zealand.
