Alexis Alvarez

Alexis Alvarez writes romances - some are light-hearted contemporary romances; others delve into the exotic world of domination and submission.

Her female heroines are strong-willed women who are never push-overs, and who can hold their own in society and the workplace, but who are intrigued with the idea of kink and submission in the bedroom. Alexis writes with skill and poetry, creating worlds that are both dark and erotic and, at times, humorous and light.

Alexis is a writer, photographer, gourmet cook, former engineer, and mom. She likes other things besides BDSM fiction, and some of them include snorkeling, lemon bars, thunderstorms, and laughing so hard with her sisters and brother that her stomach hurts.

You can find Alexis at the website she shares with her two real-life sisters, who are also romance writers: www.graffitifiction.com

I haven't swooned or laughed so much in a hot minute, let me tell ya! This book has it all. As a romance lover, I like to dive into different genres and this anthology offers a bit of almost everything. From sweet and swoony, MC Clubs, friends to lovers, Alpha males, stubborn females, laughs and more, these authors brought it and you WILL enjoy it.

It's been a while since I've read an anthology and Because Beards reminded me of why I enjoy them so much. Anthologies can be such mean teases and this one was no exception. With each story, I got invested, and then soon after... it was freaking done! Each author gave me a small taste and I cannot wait to discover more from all of them.

There were lots of laughs, swoon-worthy moments, sexy times, some HFNs, lots of love, and of course... lots of BEARDS!! I was promised 21 orgasms and although they weren't given to me literally, my imagination had a freaking blast. I definitely experienced many "lady boners" - thanks for that Ace Gray - but that's besides the point. Most of these authors were new to me, but not for long. I'll be delving into their work and stalking them as well *wink*

For beards, Alphas, holy hotness, inappropriate fortune cookies, and romance, look no further because Because Beards has it all!!

My review is for Talking to the Moon by Jeannine Colette

This was really amazing like everything Jeannine writes. It had me hooked from the first word. I'm not sure how she does it but Jeannine is able to create these super complete stories in such short word count, it's amazing, a testament to her talent. Talking to the Moon is a rich girl/poor boy story full of feelings that I absolutely recommend! It definitely left me wanting more. I think the anthology is worth it because of it, but I can't wait to have some time to check out the other stories in it. Plus, it's only $.99 and all proceeds go to a great cause!

Received an ARC of How To Kill A Lady Boner by Ace Gray. I immediately fell in love with it. It made me laugh so hard, I couldn’t stop myself from spewing coffee on my shirt. This is by far my favorite story that she has ever written. I also know that I will find myself rereading this story. Cant wait to see what the other authors have to offer. I will definitely be grabbing a copy cause HTKALB makes it worth the purchase.

I have the opportunity to read How to Kill a Lady Boner. So this is my review.

"Why on earth would they give a man with that voice, this dick, and an insanely magnetic pull over me, a mother fucking beard?"

Yup this story is about beard. About the Beast who owns the beard and the girl who hates the beard. It sounds silly right, but this is happen. For some people, including me, beards is not a turn on, although some men look hot with beard, so yeah I really love the concept of this book.
And it's pretty short, so it left me wanting more.

Love the characters.
I really connected with these characters. I can feel their struggles.
The Beast, well no need for explanation, he's The Beast, hot Beast, you really need to meet this Beast.
Livy, well I totally understand her dilemma, she loves the Beast but beard is a turn off for her.

You have to read this, to know what will happen to this couple.

Definitely can't wait to read all the stories from this anthology.

The few I've read have been good so far. They are really short stories. I have only read the work of two of the authors so I'm really flying blind here.

So far I've read the following -

~Hometown Prince - Evie Lauren - cute and no cheating or ow/om drama

~The Beard Made me Do It- Scott Hildreth - cute but not a whole lot to it. No cheating or Ow/om drama. Scott Hildreth tells you flat out he doesn't use that nonsense in his stories! That's why he's one of my favorites (and the reason I bought this anthology) Enjoyed it though

~Theirs to Protect - Renee Rose (menage) This was safe from cheating and ow/om drama. One had a deceased wife who had died a few years prior but it wasn't ott about her.

~All or Nothing - M Andrews super cute and hot

I was allowed to get a sneak peek at one of the short stories, Thou Shalt Not Beard by Leslie McAdam. This is a very satisfying sweet treat revisiting The Sun and The Moon's Ryan and Amelia. As any fan of Leslie's knows, this story was full of heart and humor. I went from laughing to swooning to breathless to sweet tears as I experienced Ryan and Amelia's fears and joys leading up to their wedding day. I loved this so much! I can't wait for the whole anthology to be released!

Beards!!! Need I say more?!?! I'm a sucker for beards so once I heard that an anthology was being written by 21 authors, I knew I wanted to read this.

I loved reading "How to Kill a Lady Boner" by Ace Gray!
First off how awesome is that title?!
I found Livy such a lovable and hilarious character! The Beard and Livy are awesome together. Love the dialogue between these two and the sexting was so HOT!!!!
This was an unputdownable read for me!

I also had the opportunity to read "One Kiss" by Martha Sweeney. It all started with One Kiss ...one kiss that just leaves you wanting more. And that's exactly what happened to me after reading it. This story just left me wanting more! I really enjoyed reading about Harper and Reese.

I also had the chance to read "Eternal Embrace" by Thomas Sweeney and I found it to be such an interesting read. I really liked seeing the characters and their love grow with one another.

I received an ARC for "All or Nothing" by A. Andrews and what a treat it was! Insta-love story with sexy moments. What more could I ask for?

I can't wait to read the rest of the stories in the anthology.

If you're a fan of short stories, romance and beards then this is the book for you!

This collection of stories with a naughty touch is to raise both money and awareness of prostate cancer. This is something close to my heart and I'm so grateful to research, past and present, for having my Dad with us now.

I have read Highland Pursuits by Emmanuelle de Maupassant and I am always blown away by her wonderful and professional prose. She is an excellent writer of historical/Victorian fiction and paints a realistic and interesting story.

This is a story set in 1928 of debutante Lady Ophelia Finchingfield turning down the offer of marriage from extinguished and wealthy Purcival who, to Ophelia's horror, gives slobbery, 'over lubricated' kisses. Ophelia's mother is a little outraged and banishes her off to relatives in sleepy Scotland to have a serious think. The plan backfires slightly in that Ophelia, after an embarrassing initial meeting, finds comfort in Hamish.

Emmanuelle's writing is always top quality and this short story is a laudable inclusion to this collection.

Okay so I was lucky enough to read a few of these stories and all I have to say is OMG HECK YEAH!

I for one am a MAJOR beard fan and the men written in this book win an A+ from me! I mean whoa!

The authors in this book were already on my favorites list! Tom Sweeney, Kacey Shea, Leslie McAdams, Martha Sweeney... And so many more! So when I read these stories I already knew I'd be hooked!

My only complaint is THEY ARE TOO SHORT! you would think I was prepared since it's a short story collection but each little plot leaves you with a book hangover!

Romantic, funny, sexy, sweet! This little book has it all and for A GREAT CAUSE! It's a win/win!

A short story is meant to draw you in and capture you from the first word to the last and all these authors delivered that! It's like a naughty treat for stolen moments and I absolutely loved it!!!!

Bestseller for SURE!

I was fortunate to get to read two awesome stories early.

First Class Distraction by Ruthie Henrick is the reason I will probably not get onto another plane without blushing. Blake and Sophia have a short but smoking hot encounter in the friendly skies that will suck you in and leave you wanting more.

Scruff You! by Faith Andrews gives us a hot bearded barista to fall over. I loved Ezra and how the mysterious girl in the glasses rattled his hipster cool. This story had awesome chemistry and banter, I hope Faith gives us more of these two!

I can't wait for the rest of the stories in this anthology!

All 3 of the stories I had the chance to read left me wanting more!

Scruff You ~ Faith Andrews
Ezra, the bearded barista, has been fascinated by "Greta" since she started coming into the coffee shop, but she hasn't given him the time of day...until a dark and stormy night. Really sweet, fun, flirty read with some great banter and 2 vulnerable and endearing characters! I'd love to get a peek at their first date.

First Class Distraction ~ Ruthie Henrick
An airport bar flirtation leads to some mile high fun for two strangers in this steamy read. I know I would have been quite distracted if I was in first class with Blake and Sophie...these 2 have some major chemistry happening! You can tell there's more to their attraction than that, although Sophie's starting a new life and doesn't seem to want the hot bearded stranger to be more of a distraction than he already was. Blake doesn't appear to be someone that gives up too easily, though...there's more to come for these 2!
But seriously Ruthie...how you gonna leave me hanging like this?!?

No Joke ~ Kacey Shea
Um, can you say holy hotness?!? Brax, the sexy bartender, sure has a way with words...I hope Manda was taking some notes for her next book! This was a fun premise- the romance writer who hasn't been getting too much romance in her own life, encounters someone who could actually be the ultimate bbf brought to life...a dirty-talking, bearded, sweetheart who knows his way around a woman. I'm fanning myself just thinking about him again.
I'm really hoping we see these 2 pop up again!

This review is of Emmanuelle de Maupassant's story "Highland Pursuits" which I received in exchange for my honest feedback.

Well, I loved this story! Ms. de Maupassant writes exquisite historical erotic romance. This genre isn't easy to do well since it requires a mastery of both period detail and language. Ms. de Maupassant is nothing short of masterful - witness the opening sentences of the story:

"It had been in the back of a taxi, in the summer of 1928, that Lady Ophelia Finchingfield had first realized her views on the wedded state. Perhaps it was his awkward, overly lubricated kiss, or the inept grope upon her breast that brought the revelation. Perhaps it was the conviction that her suitor lacked the brooding depth of a Heathcliff, or a Rochester. Whatever the substance behind her discovery, she accordingly turned down an offer of marriage from the Honourable Percival Huntley-Withington..."

I read that and was hooked all the way through to the end of the story. Her phrases "overly lubricated kiss" and "inept grope" are such perfect descriptors of a certain type of disappointing encounter with a man who on paper seemed like "Mr. Right," which I, and I'm sure other readers, can relate to. Ms. Finchingfield is sent away to Scotland to visit her elderly aunt in the wake of her rejection of her listless suitor, and there she experiences an erotic awakening as well as the emotional travails that falling in love can entail.

I look forward to reading the other contributions to the Because Beards anthology, and hope that they will turn out to be as sexy and fiercely intelligent as Ms. de Maupassant's lovely story.

Because Beards Anthology - all proceeds will be donated to The Movember Foundation

I was super stoked to be able to read 3 short stories in the Because Beards Anthology written by 3 real life sisters. I wish they were full length because each has great characters, a fun story line and swoon worthy males. Here is a spoiler free summary of each:

Confession of a Beard Lover - Adrienne Perry
A misunderstanding, someone else's outfit, a beard and a broken down vehicle has me confessing that I really enjoyed this story.

Asshole Calling - Maria Monroe
A funny ringtone, a sexy guy, a girl who's learning to speak up and (of course) a beard. I will be "calling" Maria and asking for more. :)

Fortune Favors The Beard - Alexis Alvarez
I don't want to give anything away so let's just say this. There's a guy, a gal, fortune cookies, a beard and there is laughter.

If I had to write a fortune for the anthology it would be..."This book is sure to be a hit and I bet it will do The Movember Foundation proud."

Oh yeah, you guys, did I mention that ALL proceeds are to be donated to a charity called "The Movember Foundation" which supports prostate cancer research and treatment and other critical men's health initiatives? It's a win/win when you buy this book.

I have read Highland Pursuits by Emmanuelle du Montpassant, one of the short stories in this anthology, Because Beards, and was utterly delighted by it. The author fills the story with endless detail that completely invokes the period in question, between the two World Wars of the early twentieth century. The world was changing, particularly for women, as they found new freedoms and the confidence to defy the mores of respectable society, as Lady Ophelia Finchingfield found when she turned down the chance of a conventional marriage to a dull aristocrat, whose kisses she found quite distasteful.
Banished to Scotland for the 'crime' of rejecting an eligible suitor, Ophelia discovers the charms of a Highland man so completely different from the wet-lipped charmlessness of the man she had rejected back in London. I loved this story, and the author's wonderfully detailed story-telling that kept me reading to the end in one sitting. If this story is indicative of the quality of the remaining stories, then we have a treat in store with this anthology, which is also raising funds for health research into male conditions, such as prostate cancer, an extremely worthwhile cause.

I received an ARC of Theirs to Protect, by Renee Rose in exchange for an honest review.

This is a fun, lighthearted romance perfect for times when you want a well written, erotic contemporary romance... spiced with spanking which Renee Rose does so well. I liked the characters and their interactions. The intimate scenes were well done and hot. I enjoyed the evolution and resolution of this relationship. It is pure fantasy which requires belief be set aside in order to enjoy the ride.

Because Beards Anthology
Fortune Favors The Beard by Alexis Alvarez

Fortune Favors The Beard is the contribution of author Alexis Alvarez in this anthology. Reading this story was a very enjoyable experience. The author provides a great balance between fun, romance and what I call soul insight.

A chance encounter with attraction sparks flying everywhere. Two brothers running a company with very different approaches. A baker hoping to put her budding business in the map, an order of fortune cookies and a mixup are the basic elements of the plot. When all of them collide mayhem results in the best way possible.

Alvarez experience as a photographer is evident in her writing style. As a reader you feel like you are seeing a package of candid snapshots. Her attention to detail and writing are flawless. Some scenes will make you laugh so hard you’ll cry. On the other hand, when the romantic portions come on the set change from simmering to boiling. Is there’s something I love about these characters is that they don’t hold back. With a touch of great advice they take a bet on themselves and go on.

Along the way Carter and Ari discover that there are a lot of different ways of doing work and pleasure. Whether is human nature or fortune is something that each reader will discover by itself.

My favorites quotes are:

“Both of you. You’re like sweet fluffy baby chicks walking on an expressway. Listen. Mistakes happen. Own them. Learn from them. Use them.”

“If you find that person who fits you, you need to try your goddamned best to make it work because that it is –your one snowflake from a blizzard, your one perfect moment to fly. Your one chance. You don’t let that pass.”

This short story have all the elements to appeal to a wide range of readers.

As****e Calling by Maria Monroe

Monroe’s story is one full of smart humor told as a string of seemingly odd set of circumstances. A handsome guy that radiates a cocky and jerky vibe. A young woman trying to find a foothold for being more assertive. Two persons totally different at first glance end up as partners in a non traditional charity event.

Soon the readers find out that first impressions can be deceiving and that allies and confidence can be found in the most unexpected places. Also that most of the time the best advocate you can find is yourself.

The chemistry between Tessa and Ben is undeniable, but I liked the different approach of this author. Their interaction is filled with subtleties like a simmering liquid ready to boil but not quite. The author’s language is beautiful and dynamic. Monroe lure us with a trail of sensual innuendo and let us filled the blanks with possibilities, resulting in a highly gratifying read.

My favorite quotes are:
“My head is a kaleidoscope, tiny scraps of desire and sexy songs and love poems all spinning and spinning and arranging themselves in an array of unpredictable but beautiful designs”.

“Don’t ever be afraid to say what you want”.

Confessions of a Beard Lover by Adrienne Perry

This story is very particular. It is a mix of entertainment, eroticism, and moral dilemmas. But overall Perry’s writing is very clever and utterly irreverent.

An unfortunate wardrobe malfunction and a flat tire make two strangers collide. Stranded in the middle of nowhere each trying to solve a particular set of circumstances, they get entangled in a twisted game of dare.

Daisy and Chase are confined together in what at first glance seems an ordinary occurrence. She is in urgent need of unburdening her soul. Pursuing to fulfill a promise laced with guilt she finds in Chase the perfect solution to her dilemma. Walking a razor line between fun, desire and protection Chase let her “confess”.

That tug of war redefining what’s right, what’s wrong, how far can they push the envelope is Perry at her best, challenging our concept of taboo. She makes us grasp those concepts ingrained in the corners of our mind, and bring them front and center in our line of vision where they can't be ignored.

Daisy and Chase fall into temptation, restrain and reevaluate the indisputable current of attraction that runs trough them like wildfire. As they untangle themselves there is anger, mistrust and disappointment but also the possibility of redemption and of having a fresh start.

Perry’s story reads like an Almodovar’s movie. Her characters are strong, smart, kind and full of irreverent humor. She turns concession into confession creating the perfect instrument to unburden the soul.

My favorite quote is:
“She made the world a brighter, kinder place, just with a smile."

Thou Shall Not Beard by Leslie McAdam

Amelia and Ryan are just days away from their wedding. An event that she has been planning meticulously. Except sometimes things don’t go as planned. Ryan grew a beard and that is the first crack in Amelia’s dream wedding vision and sends her into a blind rage. When that rage morphs into a cloud of self doubts and insecurity then the couple must put all their cards on the table and figure out what are they really dealing with.

McAdam’s characters are very relatable. They complement each other and deal with this situation together. As per usual the author gives us characters who are very inhibited about their sexuality, voicing their preferences and enjoying their intimacy keenly.

As the story develops readers unveil the heart of the matter. The author presents beautifully how communication is a key element in any relationship, and the importance of having a really solid base with the key elements of life as a couple firmly grounded. At the end of the day change is a constant that we all need to sort out, but when two persons decide to do so together then the stakes are higher. When the threads of two lives are combined the fabric is forever changed, and is a leap of faith that put everything on the line because two are merged into one willing to care for something bigger than the sum of the parts.

My favorite quote is:
“I knew that we were meant for each other, despite knowing that things would change. We’d change together or apart, but we would be witnesses to each other’s lives, and we would honor and respect each other.”

I had the good fortune of getting an early look at one of the short stories of this anthology, "Thou Shalt Not Beard" by Leslie McAdam.
I had not yet read The Sun and the Moon, from which the characters in this short story originally are, but it didn't really matter. I immediately got into them and their story, their little quirks, their habits, their love.
The short story perfectly encapsulates the worries and joy and irrational thoughts the couple goes through on their way to their wedding day. I loved the humour mixed with the great, deep emotions and how the couple feeds so well off of each other. Great life wisdom embedded in this short excerpt.

"Fortune Favors the Bears" by Alexis Alvarez blew me away for being so quick from sizzling to angry-clashing to endearing sweetness covered by serious sexy heat. Carter and Arie are certainly not a conventional couple, but they fit oh so well, and I am craving some fortune cookies now.

"Asshole Calling" by Maria Monroe is making me look up wife-carrying competitions around here, if Ben is my partner, I will immediately enter! The two reluctantly thrown together co-competitors quickly develop further feelings while his head is stuck between her thighs.. in the gym.. get your mind out the gutter, that is just a hold in wife-carrying. Never done it? Me, either. But this story.. I so want to know. Ben is just endearing, a little bit daft sometimes, but endearing.

"Opening Hearts" by Jerica MacMillan is a prequel to her novel, Managed Hearts, and introduces Matt and Hannah, or, if you've already read the novel, gives more insight into the early days of their relationship. We get to know a 17 year old Hannah meeting the 19-year old surfer Matt, a quick and deep relationship develops for these young adults, and seeing their uninhibited love so pure, it's great. And a perfect set-up and closer look into early Hannah and Matt.

Everything I have read of this anthology so far assured me that I need to read all the other stories right now.

All or Nothing by M. Andrews

I am a big M. Andrews fan, which is why I bought this boxed set....well that and the fact that I like all things beard related.

Zoe and Dylan were freaking adorable. Dylan comes in every morning, like clock work, to get his coffee and donuts....and really to see her. Finally, he basically can't take it anymore and tells her "he's done waiting"....did I mention he said that while licking her fingers....yeah, it's like that...yummy. He tells her he will pick her up for a date. When he gets there, she is in tears because the dress she bought for the date ripped and she only has the 1 dress. He is so sweet, they just go and get food to bring it back to her house.

I like that Dylan has not been with anyone else since he saw her....especially since she had heard rumors about him.....which I didn't like....tmi, tmi. These 2 are sweet and frisky.....know they love each other since they have gotten to know each other over the last 3 months. Short and sweet insta-love story. Loved it.

Their To Protect by Renee Rose

This was my first book from this author, recommended by a friend. I really liked this story. The 2 cops are partners at work, but close friends outside of it. Keith is the older "seasoned" cop and John is the "youthful" cop, sloane's words not mine. Their initial meeting was very, very funny. She pays for their coffee;s and when the barista tells them it's for their service, Sloane corrects her and tells them it's because they're "so good-looking".

They try to get her to have a night with them, at first she doesn't agree but then an incident happen that she calls them. They have a great night and the guys want more but she is reluctant.....you'll have to read to find out how it all works out. Good, fun story.

I will try to add reviews for the other stories as I read them.

**** This my review of "Thou Shalt Not Beard" by Leslie McAdam, ARC kindly provided for an honest review. ***

If you haven’t read The Sun and The Moon, please meet Ryan, the Sun God (I’m not joking, and you will understand once you read it), and his lovely Amelia, in this so sweet and hot short story.

I really love how the author wrote this with just the perfect blend of humor, sarcasm, romanticism and my favorite part smut. I had this goofy and dreamy smile … I was so glad to see more of Ryan and Amelia (the main characters of The Sun and The Moon, first book of the Giving You series), and how they both work as couple, blissfully happy, still hot for each other, and obviously “fighting” about the pros and cons about beards, among other things, but that’s not the really main subject here, but about the madness and irrational thoughts you might have before a wedding!

There were so many emotions bottled up for this short glimpse into Ryan and Amelia’s lives. So many love, so many laughs, so many swoons with an incredible way to make you feel each character's’ emotional state of mind.

Thank you so much Leslie for writing about my favorite kind of guy and for giving me the opportunity to read this short story. I urge you to read it and The Sun and The Moon as well, to see how Ryan and Amelia’s love story started. So worth it!!

As you might guess I loved it and I found myself a favorite word! Want to know about it??
Just read it!

Part of the Because Beards anthology, Highland Pursuits by Emmanuelle de Maupassant transports us back to London in the Roaring Twenties and the debutante season of Lady Ophelia Finchingfield.

This was a time of female emancipation and Ophelia doesn’t want to follow the plans laid out by her family, moreover that of her mother. She’s sent to her grandmother’s in the Highlands in the hope she comes to her senses. Yeah, like that’s going to happen! Especially when Ophelia crosses paths with the rugged, stoic and more importantly, bearded, Hamish.

Although in denial, Hamish and Ophelia’s attraction is apparent from the beginning and the sexual tension is palpable. It’s a case of when, not if that they give in to their feelings. There were times I wanted to knock their heads together. I did shout twice at my kindle asking them what they were playing at. I just couldn’t understand them.

Hamish may be a man of few words, but he *coughs* makes up for it in other ways *winks* What is it about beards in smexy scenes that gives us ladies the tingles?

The author really brought this era to life for me and my only complaint was I wanted more. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

With all proceeds from the anthology going to The Movember Foundation, I can’t think of a better way to spend 99 pennies. Can you?

Because Beards , A Hot Bearded Men Anthology with ALL Proceeds going to
Benefit the Movember Foundation .....Sold !!!!!!

This is an awesome way to give back . All Proceeds go to Benefit the Movember Foundation , A charity which supports Prostate Cancer Research and Treatment plus other Critical Men's Health Initiatives.
There are some Amazing Authors in this book , but I had to hurry and read two stories by my personal Favs. I know there are more Gems hidden inside this book just waiting for me to read them.

One Kiss by Martha Sweeney was about a woman and a Sexy, bearded man both getting a second chance at a Happily Ever After . I loved this quick , flirty, often hilarious read that reminded me of a modern day Cinderella.

I also got to read .

Eternal Embrace by Thomas Sweeney this is a pure masterpiece written in the males POV only, as he weaves through the tale of his struggles and heartaches as a child in the high country into adulthood with the love of his life as they both near the closing of their lives .
To me this was pure poetry. I loved that there were no names spoken , but it ended up being the most Intimate , Warm and Emotional book I have ever read.

I'm glad I got to read both of these books , I think they both show you how Diverse the stories within this Anthology will be ...There is definitely something for everyone's tastes .

I had the pleasure of reading Scruff You by Faith Andrews. It's set in a coffee shop where Ezra the barista knows Jane's order very well. Except he doesn't know her name as she goes by famous Hollywood starlets at each visit.
I'm so happy I had a chance to read this short story and I'm looking forward to reading more of this amazing anthology!

I also had the pleasure of reading No joke by Kacey Shea. It's a very quick read but it's got and to the point. I lived reading this and I can't wait for the anthology to come out!

One Kiss by Martha Sweeney
I loved reading this story so much. Harper's friends are determined to help Harper get over her ex and a New Year's Eve party is part of the plan. Reese didn't want to come the party but if he didn't he would have missed getting the gorgeous mystery girl.
This story was amazing and just wanted it to go on and on.

Eternal Embrace by Thomas Sweeney
This is my first story this author and it was amazing. This story is hauntingly lovely and it's a short read but it captures your attention to the point you don't want it to end. I hope to read from this author.

I was delighted to be given an advance copy of Emmanuelle de Maupassant's story Highland Pursuits for review.
As always Emmanuelle's prose is lush and appropriate to the era. Set in the heady and decadent period following WWI, this is the coming of age story of Lady Ophelia Finchingfield. A young woman who, when faced with a life time of wet-lipped kisses from the ineffectual Percival, resists the expectations of her London society mother and rejects his marriage proposal.
In punishment, Ophelia is sent to the wilds of the Scottish Highlands to stay with her Grandmother until she comes to her senses. It is there she meets the infuriating, yet intoxicating, Hamish, and his fine auburn beard.
Rebelling against her own innocence, Ophelia finds herself, "trying on different versions of myself...to see how they fit." Some versions are less pleasing than others.
The eroticism of this romantic tale is subtle and understated, the atmosphere rich and evocative.
You will heartily enjoy reading Highland Pursuits, and I'm certain that it sits among many other delightful stories in the Because Beards anthology.

I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at author Emmanuelle de Maupassant's contribution to this beard-themed anthology: Highland Pursuits. This fabulous piece of historical fiction sucked me back into the Scottish Highlands of the early 1920's, where the world was changing fast for everyone, but especially in terms of women's rights and freedoms. Our young protagonist, Ophelia, partakes of both during her highland sojourn - in the company of a certain auburn-bearded gentleman. The author's finesse with language is a pleasure to read, as was the delightfully old-fashioned dialogue and dramatic descriptions. If the rest of the anthology is this good, it's sure to be a fantastic collection!

I was lucky enough to get the chance to read 2 stories from this anthology which is to help the Movember Foundation supporting Prostate cancer research and treatment and other critical men's health initiatives.

Eternal Embrace by Thomas Sweeney was a touching short story and had an old fashioned love story feel to it. One of those stories that has you smiling throughout.

One kiss by Martha Sweeney was short but very sweet. A lighthearted and fun read. Very enjoyable and actually wet my appetite for more.

If all of the stories are on par with these then this will be a great collection to read.
