Gotta love this book! I wasn't surprised when this book stole my heart away. It was far from the ordinary summer romance novels that I've read. It was a sweet, endearing story with raw characters and nicely written dialogues that just crawled under my skin.
The story started off when Hawaiian local Leilani Kealoha approached the successful East Coast surfer Mason "Mase" Price and proposed to have him sponsored by her brother for windsurfing competitions. Her simple proposal led to Mase proposing back to her for an Assistant/PR Rep job. When she accepted it in exchange for his acceptance of her proposal, she did not expect to have so many realizations-- that she wanted a carefree life like Mase's, away from her comfort zone and family expectations to stay inland and settle in her Hawaiian roots. She wanted to travel with him and explore wonderful possibilities.
The tasty writing was the one that basically sold me. Just like the first time I've read a book written by Kat and Stone Bastion, I found the writing strange. But good strange. I loved Mase and Leilani's conversations and how they got to know each other in a carefree way. The fact that Leilani is a POC who fell in love with a white was also a pleasure to read. It's a rare experience for me to read a romance book that is packed with racial tensions so I ended up surprised here.
Also... I loved the setting. Hawaii. Wow. The vivid descriptions of the place amazed me. I felt like I was there the entire time I was reading the book.
The story moved slowly at times but I honestly grew to care for the characters over that time and longed for the ending to find out if they're given a chance to have their happily ever after. This book was way better than I expected. I would never hesitate to recommend it for fans of summer romance stories.

It’s difficult to determine at which point Kat & Stone Bastion’s Rule Breaker makes you see the world differently, but they do. And this heartfelt romance will own you.
Leilani Kaeloha grew up under her family’s beliefs, especially that she’d stay inland and commit her life to a Hawaiian. But that’s far from what she wants, which is to see the world and be free to find herself. She never would have imagined the East Coast “white man” who’s made a name for himself in the surfing world would be her answer.
Son of a senator Mason Price had everything he could possibly desire for except the one thing he actually wanted, his parent’s love. He has no desire to continue leading a life without meaning regardless of his parents’ expectations though. Set on facing fears and chasing dreams while riding the world’s waves, he comes across a gorgeous woman determined to bring him back to her island. What he truly finds is a kindred spirit. But can they overcome the racial differences that threaten their blossoming relationship?
Oh boy! I didn't just enjoy this book, I LOVED it! I feel bad for the books that followed because after reading Rule Breaker I felt as though every book should be measured against this one. Of course I won’t do that because every book and genre is different and I’m like John Lennon and give books a chance. I sure I won’t be able to do this book justice but I felt the need to try to express just how great a book this is.
Ever since I picked up my first Kat & Stone book, there’s been no doubt in my mind that I’ll continue to read whatever they produce. They not only create wonderfully alluring characters intertwined in interesting plots, their writing is simply gorgeous. Just as I finished the first lines, a friend asked what I was reading. I copied the lines I had just read and told her “something entrancing”
They have this incredibly unique style and manner of description, whether it’s a feeling or a place, that’s meant to be savored even though I practically read the book in one sitting because the story kept me hooked and flipping pages until the very end. Even the chapter titles are stimulating: Enticing Negotiations, Watched Over by Stars.
Beyond the sharp tongued and appealingly rebellious Leinani and the risk taking, charismatically cocky Mase was their challenging relationship. Mason just wanted to find and master the next big wave, but once he saw beyond Leinani’s façade he sought out to seduce and conquer her mind, body and soul. Something that was no easy task due to racial prejudice.
Rule Breaker doesn’t just involve important topics such as tolerance towards racial differences, it also encompasses environmental issues and touches on Star Wars… what? Ok so the latter has nothing to do with the two other serious matters but I’m I fan so I couldn’t leave it out.
I should probably tell you more about the romance between Mase and Leilani and pick quotes that depict either their sweet and tender moments, the tears-on-the-verge-of-spilling-over touching ones or their yummy sexy ones. But as I look at my review now I’m almost certain I’ve surpassed my quota. So trust me the connection these two develop is wonderful.
I loved having Cade, his sisters and Hanna make cameo appearances in a very supporting capacity as I met Mase in the No Wedding series.
There’s no two ways about it. I’m going to wax poetic about my favorite authors and Kat & Stone Bastion are most definitely on that list.

To be honest, this is a hard one to review. While really getting into the beginning of the book, the middle fell flat for me and I was bored. I found I had a really hard time picking the book up after I put it down. I swear I did not want to finish it. With that being said, when I hit the 74% mark, everything started falling into place and I finally got caught back up into the story.
One thing Kat Bastion did really well here was her descriptions of the places this book took me to. I could vividly imagine the beaches and the scenery while reading and I enjoyed that a lot. I also enjoyed learning about the Hawaiian people and their struggles with outsiders taking over their island. I could easily tell that there was a lot of research going into this book.
My favorite character hands down was the hero Mase/Mason. I LOVED EVERYTHING about him, he completely stole my heart.
On the other hand the heroine Leilani was just an OK character for me. She had these big secrets she was keeping from Mase. I was hoping these would explain some of her actions towards him but when she finally let her guard down and told Mase, I felt extremely let down.
I was hoping for a bit more heat. YES, I enjoy lots of heat in my reads, that’s just my preferences. There was plenty of sexual tension to be had but only one truly sexy and sensual scene.
I have to say that the ending was REALLY GOOD! With the last 26% of the book being much more interesting for me.
Just because I rated this book a 3.5 star read, don’t let that stop you from giving it a try. For those of you who LOVE lots a dialogue this may be just the book for you.

"Life begins at the end of your comfort zone"
This is my first book by Kat and Stone Bastion and I was very taken by their writing style. This story is heavy on the dialogue and light on explicit scenes but the character development and the sense of place was fantastic! The vivid description of Hawaii and other locations was beautiful.
Mase has fled his carefully planned-out life for the complete freedom of surfing. He lives simply but is drawn into a possible sponsorship with a board manufacturer by the stunning Leilani. Her brother has sent her to try and make a deal with Mase. He has no interest in the "going commercial" but he falls fast for Leilani.
Mase travels to Maui to meet with Leilani's brother and basically encounters prejudice the minute he arrives there. He is considered an "outsider" and his relationship with Leilani is immediately called into question. Leilani, who is at home in Hawaii, feels just as out of place in Mase's world as he does in hers. Will they be able to overcome everyone else's pre-conceived notions about them?
This is the first book I have read by Kat and Stone Bastion. The story is captivating and richly detailed. I also loved that this was a book about surfing. And, even though this is the second book in a series, you can absolutely read it as a standalone, as I did. To me, the writing almost bordered on spiritual at several points in the story, which fit in well with the overall tone of the book. Finally,
kudos to the authors for their wonderful description of Hawaii life and language! I am looking forward to reading more from these authors.

So I am not sure what to say. After reading this I am left with many things to ponder about.
Mase and Lailani story struck a chord with me. Because it actually has quite a few parallels to my own.
Well. In some aspects, others none whatsoever.
Let me explain: I am a white girl from Switzerland, who met her guy, who is coloured and from South Africa, on a trip. We both kinda shocked everyone, when we married 2 months later. Neither his family nor mine were at the time on board. Though mine just couldn't understand how I could just off the cuff be sure. That's how they saw it at the time. His family felt similar and then there was my heritage. I was rather white, for a post apartheid community.
We both are nomads at heart as well. And we travelled the world together. Well, I should say we are travelling- I don't think that will ever end. He is my home and when we met, I felt like I saw him but also he saw and recognized me truly.
So I can totally and utterly relate to the racial dramas that other have... I can also relate to them. Sadly they are true for many people and an experience mixed race couples still go through. But it's not just related to race I think it's true to social status, wealth and every other freakn prejudice out there. And honestly we all have some of those. Rule Breaker is a good reminder of that reality.
Oh let me just say this as well, I am not a surfer girl. Neither is Mr.O. I was a snowboarder, but I haven't seen much snow in the last 15 years.. so I'm not sure I can call myself that.
I have never been in Hawaii. Now I wish more than ever I could go. I wanna see those mountains, the volcanoes and flowers the Bastions so aptly describe. And I might actually give surfing a try.
Oh and then there are the environmental issues that they touch on. The finding your own way subject and also how to impact and change the world... so much that touched me and resonated with me.
So long wound story cut short: This is beautifully written novel, that left me philosophical and touched my heart. Well, the second part did at least.
The first half- is all smoldering slow romance that left me hot and bothered. Lol. I was desperate for them to finally kiss! And when the one and only smut scene happened, I felt like f.i.n.a.l.l.y!
And this is me! Miss not-into-smut-at-all. I think there should be a warning that there is a lot of smoldering and alot of extremely slow build up going on here.. forget the warning that it has some adult content. Cause that lasted like a second. Just warning all my smut-loving friend out there.
The story line- as you gathered by now- is a slow smoldering romance. It's different than most New Adult stories out there. It's slower and deeper. Yet it has lots of wonderful banter, beautiful exoctic locations and interesting characters in it. It's totally up my alley.
The character building is brilliant in some chases and kinda left me unsatisfied in others.
Mase and Lani are wonderful characters. The Bastions created MCs that feel real and tangible. As I said I connected to both of them so much. But Mase, I felt like we cut from the same cloth! Just astounding. Both of the MCs are strong, interesting individuales. Both are brave and ready to do what needs done. Both finding their own way. Simply put: Brilliant character building. They feel real and I feel like I know them.
I didn't quite get Mason's change of heart in the beginning. It was a total 180 for me. And I kept wondering about it until nearly the end. I am not quite sure why he changed his mind, yet I understand somehow why, I think.
Then there is the support cast. We get a little visit of the previous crew. I love Mase's crowd. I fell in love with them in the Four Wedding's series. Reading about them again, felt like revisiting old friends.
I also like the ever elusive yet wise Makani. Though I realise now that I have no idea about him at all. He reminded me of the wise old guy that pops up when needed, yet he is only Mase's age. Which I'm guessing is around 22. I am however intrigued and am hoping that maybe there will be a book about him. *hint hint*
Lani's family is the same. We got brief glimpses of them, I get why they behave the way the do. But I don't feel like I know anything about them. In stark contrast to Mase's family. I don't know if this is because I related more to Mase of if there was more there about his family. They were quite clearly described and it's clear who they are. But I also have the biggest issues with them. I get being ambitious, I get some people being racists and I get that family has expectations. What I didn't get at all. Mason's view that he was just the second son, that he was never loved. That while totally misguided his parents didn't want what they thought was good for him. The thing is, I've noticed that basically all novels I've been reading about wealthy american families portait them like that. So I am not sure what to say. After reading this I am left with many things to ponder about.
Mase and Lailani story struck a chord with me. Because it actually has quite a few parallels to my own.
Well. In some aspects, others none whatsoever.
Let me explain: I am a white girl from Switzerland, who met her guy, who is coloured and from South Africa, on a trip. We both kinda shocked everyone, when we married 2 months later. Neither his family nor mine were at the time on board. Though mine just couldn't understand how I could just off the cuff be sure. That's how they saw it at the time. His family felt similar and then there was my heritage. I was rather white, for a post apartheid community.
We both are nomads at heart as well. And we travelled the world together. Well, I should say we are travelling- I don't think that will ever end. He is my home and when we met, I felt like I saw him but also he saw and recognized me truly.
So I can totally and utterly relate to the racial dramas that other have... I can also relate to them. Sadly they are true for many people and an experience mixed race couples still go through. But it's not just related to race I think it's true to social status, wealth and every other freakn prejudice out there. And honestly we all have some of those. Rule Breaker is a good reminder of that reality.
Oh let me just say this as well, I am not a surfer girl. Neither is Mr.O. I was a snowboarder, but I haven't seen much snow in the last 15 years.. so I'm not sure I can call myself that.
I have never been in Hawaii. Now I wish more than ever I could go. I wanna see those mountains, the volcanoes and flowers the Bastions so aptly describe. And I might actually give surfing a try.
Oh and then there are the environmental issues that they touch on. The finding your own way subject and also how to impact and change the world... so much that touched me and resonated with me.
So long wound story cut short: This is beautifully written novel, that left me philosophical and touched my heart. Well, the second part did at least.
The first half- is all smoldering slow romance that left me hot and bothered. Lol. I was desperate for them to finally kiss! And when the one and only smut scene happened, I felt like f.i.n.a.l.l.y!
And this is me! Miss not-into-smut-at-all. I think there should be a warning that there is a lot of smoldering and alot of extremely slow build up going on here.. forget the warning that it has some adult content. Cause that lasted like a second. Just warning all my smut-loving friend out there.
The story line- as you gathered by now- is a slow smoldering romance. It's different than most New Adult stories out there. It's slower and deeper. Yet it has lots of wonderful banter, beautiful exoctic locations and interesting characters in it. It's totally up my alley.
The character building is brilliant in some chases and kinda left me unsatisfied in others.
Mase and Lani are wonderful characters. The Bastions created MCs that feel real and tangible. As I said I connected to both of them so much. But Mase, I felt like we cut from the same cloth! Just astounding. Both of the MCs are strong, interesting individuales. Both are brave and ready to do what needs done. Both finding their own way. Simply put: Brilliant character building. They feel real and I feel like I know them.
I didn't quite get Mason's change of heart in the beginning. It was a total 180 for me. And I kept wondering about it until nearly the end. I am not quite sure why he changed his mind, yet I understand somehow why, I think.
Then there is the support cast. We get a little visit of the previous crew. I love Mase's crowd. I fell in love with them in the Four Wedding's series. Reading about them again, felt like revisiting old friends.
I also like the ever elusive yet wise Makani. Though I realise now that I have no idea about him at all. He reminded me of the wise old guy that pops up when needed, yet he is only Mase's age. Which I'm guessing is around 22. I am however intrigued and am hoping that maybe there will be a book about him. *hint hint*
Lani's family is the same. We got brief glimpses of them, I get why they behave the way the do. But I don't feel like I know anything about them. In stark contrast to Mase's family. I don't know if this is because I related more to Mase of if there was more there about his family. They were quite clearly described and it's clear who they are. But I also have the biggest issues with them. I get being ambitious, I get some people being racists and I get that family has expectations. What I didn't get at all. Mason's view that he was just the second son, that he was never loved. That while totally misguided his parents didn't want what they thought was good for him. The thing is, I've noticed that basically all novels I've been reading about wealthy american families portait them like that. Another incredible book by Kat & Stone Bastion!
Rule Breaker is full of emotions, and is a truly original love story. It emphasizes a great deal on cultural diversities, discrimination, and preconceived judgments. How two people that have so many obstacles and differences can rise above, and look past what may not look right, but feels right.
Mase and Leilani couldn't be any more different, but so much alike at the same time. Strong, focused, and compassionate, each reflect the same qualities but also show what the other person might not possess. Their chemistry was evident right from the beginning, even though it was a struggle for Lani to finally accept her true feelings for Mase, and move passed the prejudice that would ultimately occur. Love is more than just the color of your skin, or where you're from.
This book was a great read, and I very much enjoyed it. But in true fairness, I did have difficulties getting through the first half of the book. To me, it seemed slow moving and not really have a true focus to what the story was initially about. But don't get me wrong, the writing was brilliant, as it was in Heartbreaker, it just took me a little longer to connect with this story until the halfway point. But by the end, my viewpoint changed and I thought it was very entertaining.
Even with a few setbacks for me, I would definitely recommend this book. Rule Breaker delves deep into real-life circumstances, and challenges your emotions throughout the entire story. It's a rare romantic love story.

***5 ‘Live for the moment’ Stars***
A little confession: I tend to avoid books that are set in Hawaii like the plague, it’s a little quirk of mine and has to do with the fact that I am a born and raised Hawaii girl and am a little picky with how my islands are portrayed. And while I can sit and watch Hawaii 5-0 and pretend I’m back home while yelling at the t.v. that they are driving in the opposite direction from where they are supposed to be going and did it that way only because it was “prettier”, reading about it tends to be a lot harder. So when Rule Breaker popped up, I looked it over and pushed it to the side. But then I went back and read the blurb (and drooled over the cover ~ sue me, it’s fucking HAWT) and I don’t know if it was the fact that it was Aloha Friday and I was listening to my Hawaiian music mix and feeling a little homesick, but the description tugged at a heart string and I found myself going for it. I’ll admit that I had to remind myself to be open minded and that #MyHawaii isn’t everyone’s Hawaii, so I dove in and as I kept turning the pages my wariness faded away and I before I knew it I felt like I was home. The sights, smells, tastes and sounds were right there in front of me, welcoming me home while I watched a boy and girl from very different worlds finding a common ground, learning about each other and falling in love, despite the odds.
Mase is on a quest. He’s looking for himself, his happiness, and is using the waves of the world as points of interest. I adored Mase. His laid back manner and openness to experiencing everything around him was a huge draw. He’s also a bit of an enigma. While there is a thin layer of cynicism in him, there is also an equal layer of almost wide eye’d optimism to combat it. He is well aware of how the world works, and yet he still sees the good in it. He’s sweet, sneaky, and more observant than many give him credit for.
Leilani is an island girl through and through. She loves the ʻāina, her ‘ohana and her culture. But she craves more. She wants to experience all the world has to offer, but with years of being told where her heart should be, she doesn’t know how she’ll be able to have the best of both worlds. I got Leilani. While I didn’t grow up the way she did, I experienced many of the sames thing, so her beliefs, dreams, fears, all of it resonated with me and I kept urging her, in my head, to step outside of the box and realize that she could have the best of both worlds.. I loved her sassy and sweet nature and while she had some very typical teenage moments, she also showed a lot of maturity as well.
I really enjoyed how their relationship evolved. The beginning was a little choppy for me, but I liked the pacing of it. They were attracted to each other and had that gut feeling thing going on, but took it slow. A lot of the slow and steady pace has to do with Mase understanding that he needed to prove to Leilani that he was the right man for her and to give her time to realize it, especially with how conflicted he knew she was. While this one falls on the ‘more sweet than smexy’ side of the line, the chemistry between them was intense and it was fun to watch them work things out between them, even when there were some huge roadblocks in their way.
As I said earlier, Leilani’s reality wasn’t like mine growing up in Hawaii. I experienced a lot of what she did, but from a different standpoint and with that being said I must give the author’s mad props for the way they presented life in the islands. They showed the good, the bad and the ugly and it’s not an easy thing to do especially when dealing with the hot button issues that are apart of this story, and are very much alive in the day to day life in Hawaii, but they did it with respect and honored the culture, it was pono. A portion of my rating is definitely due to how they treated Hawaii and its culture, especially when I saw that the correct spellings of the Hawaiian words were being used, so that definitely got bonus points.
This was my first book by Kat and Bastion Stone and I enjoyed their writing style and the attention to detail. The 1st person dual POV was done well and I liked the pacing of the story and how everything unfolded. Now I’ll just have figure out a way to shuffle the books on my endless TBR list around to make room for their books.

I haven’t had the pleasure of reading the first book in this series, or even previous works by these authors, but what I do know is, I’m a sucker for a good Romeo & Juliet type story and this one delivered on that, in a pretty phenomenal way.
It’s even better when like within this story, what takes place brings forth every conceivable emotion and feeling imaginable.
Before I get into that though, I first want to say that knowing next to nothing about Hawaii, I went into this story blind to the language and culture, even mannerisms, but through it was taken on one of the most visual and descriptive journeys. It was as much a learning experience (which I love when I’m reading) as it was an escape, the way reading is always meant to be. That aspect adding something to my reading that as of late has been lacking. So my hat is off to both authors for creating such a rich atmosphere for me to learn and fall in love with.
I’ve never been where Leilani and Mason find themselves. I probably never will walk the same road that they do, but what I did get from their journey walking it together, I think it will stay with me long after the book is done. The strength they both show, along with the very real weaknesses as they face what to some would be insurmountable odds, was a beautiful thing to witness. Equal parts breathtaking and heartbreaking because I just felt for each of them, together and apart. These were incredibly likable characters, put in one hell of a situation. I will say that I felt more of a kinship or connection with Mason, but I had a feeling right from the beginning I would.
When I mentioned before that I ran the gamut of emotions, it’s because of the very real issues presented throughout and the connection that the authors built for these characters. It made it impossible not to feel. Not to sympathize. But more than that, not to understand. My heart melted at the same time as it took a hit. It laughed at the same time as it wanted to cry. It was a book that I was in no way prepared for, but one I’m so glad I took the chance on.
My thanks to the authors, NetGalley and all others involved in letting me read a copy of this story before official release. This was a journey in multiple ways that I’m glad I got to be a part of. I can’t wait to read more from these authors in the future.

Kat and Stone are two of my favorite authors. I volunteer to read and review their books. This story was a bit different being set in Hawaii and around the world. I leave this story for the reader to decide if this is an adult book while choosing this book to read. Melanie is 19 and goes to find Mason on a small island to get Mase for a sponsor for her brother. They tease each other. He hires her to work for him and he leases a house to stay near her. I was surprised when Mase is always getting beat up by Lani's brother. And I thought it was bad stateside! Mase detests his political parents who want him to help him get his father elected. Spoiler. Lani meets Mase's friends and she runs back home because she is intimidated by Mase's mother. Spoiler. This one didn't make me go for tissues. But you may have to walk away every once in awhile. I would recommend to read this book. PS There is a dictionary in the back. Enjoy your reading. You won't regret it!

Rule Breaker was a book that really got me, this story about Mason and Leilani was so romantic, heartwarming and full of sparks and good vibes.
Mason was looking for a change of scenery, far away from pressure, his parents, trying to find a meaning to his life. When all his friends are getting happy and achieving their dreams, he decided to grasp the nettle. And then Leilani happens. And everything changed for them.
Leilani was a young woman full of fire and fierce. Coming from a protective Hawaiian family, she wants to break free, to finally live. Until Mason and his charming ways. Is she willing to let him in her life, in spite of the hurdles in their way.
I had to say that I was surprised by how fast they clicked. It was a little confusing, but once you outdated that part, and I got into the story, it was just magnificent.
Two people who seemed more to have in common, secrets and a will to find their path in the world. Together they definitely make sense.
The authors make such an incredible work to bring the heat, the sexual tension with a hint of sweetness, Mason and Leilani were a stunning couple, bright and full of charm. The way they both described their feelings were gut-wrenching and demanding. I was seduced and rooting for that couple. They had to face people’s assumptions, racial tensions but together they were strong, wild and free. I loved seeing their relationship bloomed, with some inner battles to fight.
Mason was the rule breaker to Leilani guarded heart. It took some time to win her over, but reading their journey was a delightful and aspiring love story.
Romantic and poetic, it was a beautiful breath of fresh air. A love story against all odds. This book is my favorite book by Kat and Stone Bastion so far. Definitely. Embrace the beauty of the storyline and scenery places and don't feel afraid to surf on the wave, so worth it.

After reading this, I had to take a few days before writing my review. And it’s only because I just couldn’t form words to put my review together! This book is so beautifully told and had so much heart thrown into it! I’ve read quite a few books this year, but this one struck a chord in me! The story, the characters, the intimacy between the characters! Ugh, there wasn’t anything I hated about this book! Just go one click it!

I really wanted to give this book a chance and read it all the way through. But in the first chapter when a problematic term was used twice, it left a sour taste in my mouth and I couldn't continue. That term being the description of the Hawaiian female main character, Leilani, as "exotic" by the white male main character, Mase.
"I did my best to ignore her exotic beauty"
"And the exotic girl who'd been merely pretty....became stunning"
The reason why referring to Leilani is problematic is because it turns the woman into a commodity (Special thanks to Mariam for bringing my attention to this!)
Now, take away the problematic term, you're still left with a bland story with two characters who have no personality and who you really don't know what they even look like besides Leilani being described as a "beautiful island girl" and Mase described as "scraggly blond hair surrounded by a pretty-boy face. Pretty white boy." It feels like the authors wanted to give the readers a stick figure version of the characters and have the readers do the rest. But, sadly, that doesn't provide for an immersive reading experience.
With the characters being bland and carbon copy, so were the interactions between the two. They meet, they're immediately attracted to each other, that attraction quickly leads to them feeling the strongest connection that they've ever felt. When I say quickly, I really do mean quickly. All of this happened within 2-3 times of meeting and while I don't have a problem with insta-love as a whole, I do have a problem when it happens while the characters and their interactions are rather bland. If characters are going to fall in love quickly, there has to be something there to convince me that they did. Just showing me that a character has the inner thoughts of how they've never felt this kind of connection before isn't enough.

I find this a really difficult book to review. I loved the first book and was so happy to get the latest in the series. This was completely different, and whilst I liked the story as a whole, it was an incredibly slow read. The surfer setting was fun, but maybe as a non-surfer I couldn't entirely get into it the level of detail.
Lani was so much older than the 19 years that she was, both in the sense of what she had done, as well as being an old soul. I liked the twist in her tale right at the end, but at the same time it caused me to enjoy something earlier in the story less, because I was worrying unnecessarily...
I honeymooned on Maui, so I enjoyed reading about a place I remembered - although I was mostly blind to the racism that is so evident in this story. It evoked perfectly the amazing mixture of wild, both mountain and shore.

5 STARS!!!
This is the second book I've read by Kat and Stone Bastion and I LOVED it! The writing flows smoothly and the story made me feel so many emotions, I cannot even! This Modern-day Romeo and Juliet Story captured my heart and soul!
Mason and Leilani are two lost souls, both trying to find themselves. And then they find each other, and oh my! The sparks! I adore these two, especially Mason Price. Oh my goodness. I LOVE HIM. He's sexy, fun and strong and hella hot!
Rule Breaker is a story about rediscovering yourself and following your heart. It is a story about racial and cultural divides and allowing love to win! This is truly a heart felt romance that had my heart aching, skipping and bursting! I loved this happily ever after romance and cannot wait to read more from Kat and Stone Bastion!

This a beautiful story of unconditional love.
Mase and Lailani start thier romance out slow but was still hot and steamy but it something they have to fight for. The flow, the story line, the characters are amazing. Definitely a must read.

Breaker, Kat Bastion with Stone Bastion

I love Kat and Stone’s stories. full of fabulous characters so real I could ( and in my mind do ) talk to them, they feel like friends. Mix them up with some very real tales, things that happen, snippets from real lives and they’re books I can’t resist. Oh – and the HEA, thats essential for me ;-) I’m a sap!
I couldn’t remember much about Mase at first, he’s in the others books but very much a secondary character. It took a while for me to mentally place him in the pic I have of all these folks.
He’s a gem, feels far more mature than his years, been through a lot, is very self reliant. I love his ethos on the environment, the phrase “leave nothing but footprints” was really made for him, and as someone who’s also concerned and at times angry about what we are doing to the planet I found myself nodding when he was talking about issues.
Its interesting, I know nothing of Hawaii, but felt after reading this that I’d absorbed a bit of their culture, the island and islanders and their history along with the story being told. Subtle education but something I love when it happens, and it feels very well researched unlike many novels where “facts” get thrown at the reader, pronouncements about morality and legality are made without searching for the truth or the wider picture.
He’s surfing, happy in his own little world when his peace is shattered by a gorgeous girl, but we can see from the way he reacts to her just how tired, how jaded by everything he’s become.
Leilani (Lani) brings him to life though. there’s something about her, they way she’s so uncompromising, doesn't do the fan/adoration thing he’s used to, but makes it clear she really doesn’t want to be there...Mase is intrigued.
So starts a beautiful, slow burn romance, full of tensions, snippets of humour, some very real issues about race, culture, history and the environment, but done in such a perfect way that I didn’t feel Preached at, just made me think, and wonder at how thoughtless humans can be, how we take gifts of nature as our right. Aannd sorry, I’m almost off on another rant :-)
Lani is a lovely girl but its clear from very early on she’s got secrets, that she’s very cautious, that she doesn’t want to be attracted to Mase.
Tough luck though as she’s no way to hold out from the gentle, thoughtful steamroller he is.
She’s the only girl as mum died young and only she’s her dad and four brothers left. I did feel the about face from them needed a bit more looking into – given how strong their feelings were I didn’t feel that events that occurred were enough to bring forward this sudden volte-face. Small niggle though and its the only one I can think of.
BTW I wish I’d looked at the back first, there’s a really handy glossary of not just the Hawaiian and Pidgin words but surfing terms too....I worked out most from the context but it would have been handy to refer to ;-)
We catch up briefly with characters from the other books, and I really enjoyed seeing them, bringing together that peaceful, quiet, gentle island life with the fast moving, anything-goes, cutthroat, immoral and power hungry world of politics. Really does show two extremes.
Its a lovely story, not in-your-face- sex but a very sensual slow burn romance, where we can appreciate how thoughtful Mase is, how he’s taking his time not to scare off Lani, he knows she’s worth the effort.
I loved the bigotry ( well, loved in that it was so real, not loved for the sake of). Sometimes I think all the bars we put on love, gender, race, religions, class etc its a wonder anyone ever finds someone to suit.
Its very sensual but its not IMO an erotic read, just one that's so perfectly balanced. For me its got a very different feel to the other stories, less intense on the romance/sex side, not but more complex on the personalities, on what they share and how they can be together. It got sex in it, just in a more subtle way that the other books, and it fits Mase and Lani, the characters they are.
Its a beautiful story that made me think: about our world and the environment, history and its impact on the planet, bias and bigotry, politics and morality – yeah, I know, that's sounds like an oxymoron, but I have to believe at least Some politicians are there for what they believe, not what they can get. Am I an optimist or just gullible?
Mase says at one point “We can’t even begin to fix everything happening around us, let alone political issues happening globally. But we can be the best selves we were meant to be. We can be pure and good. Forgiving and relentless.”
That's such a wonderful statement and is how I try to live my life, doing what feel right for me, pushing for change trying to lead by example and one tiny step at a time.

Book Review: 10 “Capital Y with Exclamation Marks” stars!!!!
The Bastion Duet broke all the freaking rules using their phenomenon RULEBREAKER! Besides, the rules can be broken only but the professionals and I guarantee that Mase is undoubtedly one of them!!
My excitement every time I get my hands on a Bastions book can’t be described. From The Espionage Effect – the first book of them I read – until Rulebreaker now, I haven’t stopped feeling giddy about each book they write or regret any of them. I honestly believe that these two authors are two of those who come from a insanely-magical-pens planet. It isn’t surprising that they own a high place on my Top Favorite Authors list, is it?
Rulebreaker is the second book in the standalone series, The Unbreakables, who tells unforgettable love stories and its books have not only drool-worthy males and dynamic females, but also drool-worthy AND dynamic covers!! Just take a minute to look good at both Heartbreaker‘s and Rulebreaker‘s covers! Don’t they make your mouth go dry and your panties to fall off? Well, mine do!!
“Life is right in front of us. All we have to do is step out and grab it.”
Usually, in this kind of series, the one book sort of follows the style of its previous. And I said usually, because this series definitely doesn’t fall under this mode. In this one, the first from the second are miles away from each other when it comes to the plot, rythme, style. Each book has created its own galaxy where is inhabiting every little thing that exists in their story. And I really can’t compare the two since they are different and beautiful in their own special way, but I HAVE TO! Because the galaxy Mase and Lani created through Rulebreaker couldn’t get any more spectacular and addicting. And let’s not talk about how freaking cool was the fact that, along with the gooey feelings it extracted from me, I now learned a part of the Hawaiian language! How PONO (=perfect), right? The more new words I learned, the more excited and invested I was becoming in the story.
What made me adore – if that’s possible – even more everything about this book was that Kat & Stone included the reaction of the locals at Lani and Mase’s relationship. Sometimes it may seemed a bit extreme and unreasonable for 21st century, but it was the factor that made Lani and Mase’s come-together even more intense, priceless and real. It made them both more determined , brave and powerful to fight for their love and prove them all wrong. And I never felt like just a person watching all these unfolding from outside; since the beginning, I felt part of the story and I was experiencing every moment of happiness, steaminess, love, pain, fustration, anger etc they were going through. If that can’t persuade someone to love the book and place on the TOP 5, then I don’t know what can.
I don’t how they do it, but with every new book they write, Kat & Stone become even greater and intense. As for the characters they create, they become deeper, more meaningful, real and unique. Definitely two of the best and MUST authors of contemporary literature.

November 8, 2016“Rule Breaker” is the second book in the Unbreakable series by Kat & Stone Bastion, but each book could be read as a standalone.
I didn’t know about these authors and more than anything else I was intrigued by the synopsis, the setting so special and, I don’t deny it, the beautiful cover of the book and knowing Mase, the protagonist is a surfer.
I’ve always just seen this surfer guy through movies or tv shows, because here in Italy the waves are hardly comparable with those of the ocean, but those who love surfing so much has always intrigued me a lot.
In this book the islands of Hawaii are showed under a different light, compared to the usual romance books where usually they’re an enchanting exotic background in the love stories more or less passionate. This is a completely different dimension, a particular reality, where the natives of Maui have a real intolerance, which leads to bad incidents of racism, with strangers, especially if they’re white. I would say almost a “backwards” kind of racism compared to what we are used to and the expense is primarily Mase the male lead of this story.
Mase is an American guy who has decided to live his life fully embracing his greatest passion: surfing. He travels the world, participating to competitions in this sport, and he is fortunate to be wealthy enough to be able live in freedom.
Gorgeous, rich, and free he might seem the usual stereotype of playboy “panties-melting” a little empty, an eternal Peter Pan, but he is definitely not so.
He isn’t traveling to find himself, he knows very well who he is, what he wants and especially what he left behind and what’s important in his life.
Life has already given him a hard lesson and he learned his lesson.
Because of the importance of his family is accustomed to receive a lot of attention, and they’re not always welcome, but still he remains intrigued by Leilani, a beautiful Hawaiian girl, who tryes to make a deal with him, but she is nothing but accommodating or submissive.
Their story is completely outside the box and unlike anything you might expect from two young protagonists and their insta physical attraction.
The force that drives them toward each other is palpable, ever-present between them, but the intensity of the connection of their souls is even more important.
Mase knows this girl could be special for him, she’s so enigmatic and full of secrets, and he is remarkable for his will to wait without screwing up things, he wants to discover the real Leilani slowly, win her heart despite her reluctance showing her that he may be worth to face all the difficulties they might find along the way because of their racial and cultural differences.
And Leilani is a real tough girl, who knows everything about what they might expect from her people if they show themself together and she doesn’t make life easy for Mase in turn.
Needless to say I loved very much Leilani and Mase: the constant irony present in their dialogue, their back and forth, and some magic moments they share, such as the beautiful and perfect bond that unites them surfing together, when they are truly free to be themselves, by dropping all masks.
Their story is so real, with a strong sexual tension that lingers between Mase and Leilani, which, however, has been able to leave much room for the romance and the depth of their bond which grows slowly, day by day, giving itself time to know each other.
A beautiful story that deserves to be read, full of feelings and a genuine care between Mase and Leilani.

Their story is so real, with a strong sexual tension that lingers between Mase and Leilani, which, however, has been able to leave much room for the romance and the depth of their bond which grows slowly, day by day, giving itself time to know each other.
A beautiful story that deserves to be read, full of feelings and a genuine care between Mase and Leilani.

What a great read! Filled with powerful writing that conjured up majestic views of Hawai’i, the authors take us on a fun filled journey of conquering dreams, overcoming family expectations and prejudices, forgiveness and living in the now, all the while spinning an enchanting, romantic, steamy-hot story with amazing characters who find it in themselves to risk it all for love! I very much enjoyed this book!

Leilani Kealoha is an islander. She’s lived in Hawaii her whole life but dreams of exploring the world, away from her cultural dictatorial family. She’s a bit of a wild child, acting without thinking and it usually ends with her in trouble. She has a lot of spark and she wanted to be free from the stifling traditions her family placed on her so when her brother, someone who has always had her back, asks for her assistance in landing a popular surfer, a haole - a white man/stranger, she was reluctant, but owed him, so said yes. She never thought she’d find more than she bargained for. I loved her resistance. It was fun to watch her struggle between obligations and what her heart wanted. And then ultimately melt when hot-boy Mase was around. She was such a strong, admirable character.
Mase was level headed, had a need to be honest, loyal and honorable. He tried to give as much as he got and wanted fairness and peace in his life. I enjoyed his character so much. He was strong and solid and knew what he wanted and went after it. He was complicated though. His wasn’t running so much as trying to leave behind a shaky and tragic past. He longed to find a place to “belong” and when he decides to settle amongst the locals in Lanie’s village, not everyone is willing to give the haole a chance. But I loved his determination. He was willing to fight the prejudices to keep the life, the place and the woman he finally felt he belonged to.
These two together were so sweet! There was a gentle, slow-build to passion, but the in between was intense and wonderful. I couldn’t wait for these two to finally come together and when they did, it was fantastic!
The Wrap Up:
This was a great story with fun dialogue as the characters bantered back and forth and touched on some serious issues within our society. It also had some thrilling surfing action and a lot of intense character moments. And it was a real eye opener as to the struggle of island life and how they live there, how they think and ultimately, how wonderful a people they are.
I’d never really read a surfing book before, or one that included such scene view of Hawaii and I’ve never been interested in visiting that part of the world, but now ... it’s firmly on my bucket list. This was such a great read!

Mase Price isn’t one to conform to society’s standards. He is happy where he is, enjoying life and searching for happiness in simplicity. But it takes one fiery island gal to make him think twice about his easy going life. Leilani interests him more than anyone ever has and he ends up going to the extremes to prove himself to her, even if that means sacrificing everything.
Leilani Kealoha can’t figure out how she found herself in such a dilemma, one minute she’s doing her brother a favor by finding the infamous surfer, Mase Price to compete on his custom made boards, and the next she’s fighting an inner battle to run as fast as she can from the blonde surfer boy that totally gets her. It’s not like Leilani to bond so quickly, especially with an outsider. Leilani has a difficult decision to make; stay true to her culture and her family or follow her heart.
When the book starts you get a very vague sense of who these two are and that made it difficult for me as a reader to understand the relationship between Leilani and Mase. Instead of feeling instant connection or even a slow melting desire, I got a hot headed, hormonal heroine that got mad all the time which made it hard for me to like her.
Mase and Leilani do have a few things in common though, one is surfing. They can run away for hours and get lost in the oceans wonders and in each other. They also have deep scars, one in particular is losing someone they both loved. And finally they both share the same values and that is to be one with yourself and the earth. To live in peace and good vibes only and that can only be achieved by living through love not conformity.
Unbreakable starts off with witty banter, the promise of a hot connection but gave me a lot of repetitive and confusing feelings which made the relationship fall flat. It is however a somewhat sad story as it has to do with forbidden love and what they go through as an interracial couple.
So, did this book make me want to go into debt and move to Hawai’i? Absolutley. Because no matter how I felt about the heroine, I absolutely felt like I was in Hawai’i enjoying the island life with the way everything was so beautifully described. Did it make me miss The Michaelson’s? You damn right it did. (I love you Cade *wink*) But unfortunately, my connection with Mase and Leilani as a whole fell short.

This is a story that will touch your heart, make you feel so much in a short time span, show you the struggle that two people have when their culture is different and the struggles they have to unite and find their place within.
Mason and Leilani make a fantastic couple in this book. He is one strong man and is there for Leilani when she needs him, especially when she needs him to be strong for her. He is the man for her, to be strong for her and be the man to fight and win her heart. Their story is unique and starts when Mason is a competitive windsurfer and meets Leilani when she sought out Mason because she was helping out her brother Makani an offered Mason sponsorship for Mason to use Makani's surf boards but Mason countered with another offer to Leilani.. that is how their love story started. Its how love blossomed and bloomed , how love found its way between two broken people and how they heal each other. I loved their final outcome and I cant say enough good things about this book and their love story.

An interesting idea for a love story. Two people who share the need to break the rules and constrictions of their world. Two people who are starving for change and a new life. But the delivery of this story was lacking.
If you have a book with a story line that is based on characters depth and emotion, then I feel like they should have some depth and raw feeling to their characters. Or at least more personality and character growth through the book. I found the only growth was a bit choppy and forced. The only word that comes to mind to describe the book for me it, stale.
The premise of this book is brilliant, and a story that desperately needs to be told. I hope maybe this is the reason I was so incredibly disappointed in the pithy dialog and drab scenes. I felt like the blurb and beginning promised a story of true and serious trial and tribulation, but the story that's told is just so forced and fake you can't connect like you should.

Really loved this. It was fresh, unique, and completely entertaining. The relationship between Leilani Kealoha and Mason Price was a wonderful slow burn. Their relationship was faced with so many issues yet the couldn't resist the attraction between. They are two lost souls who find each other and help the other find their way. Mase has grown up with parents who have pushed him toward a life in the political arena. A life he wants no part of. Leilani has dealt with the over protectiveness of her family and wants to get away from the prejudices and expectations they have. Watching Leilani and Mase find their way was truly a thing of beauty.
Definitely a book I recommend.

Rule Breaker was a great second installment in the Unbreakable series by Kat and Stone Bastion! Leilani and Mason were a great combination of sweet, sexy and swoony. I loved that the authors highlighted the beautiful and exotic state of Hawaii in this novel but also the multicultural and diverse backgrounds of Leilani and Mason.
I thought that Rule Breaker was heartfelt and amazing. Mason and Leilani had heart and their story was filled with sass, snark as well as a star crossed lovers theme. I absolutely loved this story and I can't wait for more from these authors.
