The senior class at Harwood Union High School are coming together to honor five of their classmates, who were killed in a wrong-way crash almost a year ago.

Mary Harris, 16; Cyrus Zschau, 16; Liam Hale, 16; Eli Brookens, 16; Janie Cozzi, 15 were on their way home from a concert last October, traveling south-bound I89 when the crash occurred near Williston.

Chittenden County State’s Attorney Sarah George say depositions continue in the case against the driver, Steven Bourgoin. So far only law enforcement have been interviewed. George says best case scenario, is the trial starts in February of next year. Court documents show Bourgoin was having financial issues along with domestic and custody problems with his girlfriend.

Nearly a year later, the senior class at Harwood is looking to move forward and will dedicate their class gift to the five students and their memory. The gift will be in the form of a gazebo which will be constructed by the Carriage Shed and will sit in front of the school. The class is hoping raise $7,500 by October 1st.

“Our hearts were broken and they continue to be broken, but we’ve also had to move forward and support our kids… This is not something that you ever recover from fully but I think for a lot of kids are trying to take this experience and move forward with it and the gazebo is way to make something beautiful out of something sad,” said David Goodman, Harwood UHS School Board Chair.

A dedication ceremony is being planned for October 5th. To help Harwood’s senior class achieve their goal, click here.
