The NHL is reportedly considering changing its shootout rules so that any player can shoot any amount of times after the first three shooters have shot. In this edition of the hotstove we discuss whether changing the rules is a good idea.

Todd Cordell

Shootouts have been boring to me for a few years now so anything they can do to spice it up is good in my books.

Fans at games are paying to be entertained. Watching 4th line players who skated two shifts in the 3rd period try and deke out goaltenders after sitting on the bench for half hour isn't overly interesting.

Changing the rule would give star players like Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, Tyler Seguin and co. more opportunity to showcase their high-end skill and pull off something crazy. That sounds like a step in the right direction to me.

Matt Henderson

Give the people the show they want. They dont care about the 17th shooter and whether the 6th defender can maybe score this time. That makes for a great highlight later in the night but actually being there at the game it's awful. I want to see McDavid try 3 times. I want to see Oshie work his magic. That's what I'm all about seeing. If the NHL wants to slap some rules on it like you can only go 2X in a row but you can go an infinite number of times then that's OK too. Just let me see the best players in the world do their stuff without having to sit through guys with "heart" trying to score when they can barely skate.

James Tanner

Yes. Absolutely. Why would anyone argue about this and how is it already not a rule?

Shootouts exist for one reason: make the game more fun. Since seeing Ovechkin, Benn or Tarasenko go multiple times is obviously more fun, why the hell not?

I can't even imagine why anyone would argue against this, but I'm sure someone somewhere will want to protect the sanctity of the shoot-out and it's vaunted seven years of tradition.

Adam French

No. I don't get why they would change it. Who the heck wants to see Johnathan Toews and T.J. Oshie scoring 15 rounds deep of useless stupidity? If a game is going to go 15 rounds then I want to see weird players like Engelland and others that can't score to save their life...like Yakupov. Variety is the spice of life and that's how I like my shootout. Hell. I'd love to see goalies take a shot. Make it mandatory.

Ed Stein

I don't necessarily have a problem with adjusting the shootout rules to allow the same player more than one opportunity, but I might tweak it a bit. Repeat shooters would be OK after round five, however they max out at three attempts. Like many other fans, there are other ways I'd like to see the NHL resolve ties before a shootout.

Peter Tessier

The shoot out was fun in the beginning now it's dull. Anything to avoid it is better but if we're going to give it new life then let's do so by letting the best shoot as much as possible.

So let's make the shoot out great again by allowing anyone to shoot multiple times after the first three shooter. If you want Ovie to shoot every time after the first three until it's decided, let him do it. If you want him to do the 4th and 5th shots but let some one else do 6th, you can bring him back for the 7th.

Personally I would like to add one more thing to the shoot out- take away the goalie's stick if the 3 on 3 ends with one team on the PK. I want this thing done in three shooters all the time.
