Sweet Reality

Rate this book
Sugar, Sea Salt, And Show Biz Jen Reid's life after walking off a reality show has been great-she's gone from being a broke twenty-four-year-old Seattleite with no love life and no job to the twenty-five-year-old who got the guy, moved to Miami, and is starting a bakery with her best friend. She thinks her showmance boyfriend might be about to propose. And with mouthwatering goodies based on everyone's favorite shows, her business, Sweet Reality, is destined for success.

That is, until a killer competitor opens right across the street. If she's going to save Sweet Reality, Jen has to come up with a secret ingredient-like the recipe that won Totally 80s Bake-Off. Jen can get it-if she steps back into the spotlight. Soon she and her boyfriend are out to sea on a cruise ship full of reality stars, including her nemesis, Ariana; her lying, cheating ex; and some wicked producers looking to bring the drama. Separate cabins, "surprises" from her past, and scenarios tailor-made to spark fights are just the beginning. But with her self-respect, her business, and her future on the line, the fallout from this made-for-TV plotline will be all too real . . .

Most of you have heard me say this before, but for those of you that don’t already know, I’m a HUGE reality TV junkie, the trashier the better. If you saw my DVR you would probably cringe in embarrassment, but I have no shame. Real Housewives? Yep, every city. Teen Mom? Yes please, both OG, 2 and the U.K. versions. Top Chef? Uh huh. Big Brother? Hell yes, I can’t wait for the finale tonight although I can’t stand any of the remaining cast members. I could go on and on, but my point here is that combining my love of reading with reality TV is my idea of nirvana.

This is the second book in a series and unfortunately I did not have a chance to read the first. This one picks up over a year after the first book ends and the author provided just enough backstory for me to feel all caught up. Jen and her boyfriend Justin met on a reality show, they had a showmance, and against all odds are still happily dating. When they get invited to film a different show aboard a cruise ship they jump at the chance. It’s seven days of drama and I loved every bit of it!

This is a total guilty pleasure read, light, fluffy and totally outrageous. Jen is the girl next door type with a side of sass and her and Justin were adorable, even if their communication skills were awful, but their miscommunication was my fortune as it added some very juicy drama. There’s backstabbing, frenemies, plain old enemies, and it has a racy, naughty aspect as well. There were even some tender moments in the end that I wasn’t expecting. If you want a behind the scenes look at the world of reality TV and the manipulations and betrayals it produces, you’ll like this one!

The drama and tension continues in Sweet Reality. This time no fishbowls, it is time for a cruise!

So I just had to continue reading this series. The first one had left in need for more. And how can I resist more drama and romance? Plus this time on a cruise ship. Ah, one day I hope that I can also go on a cruise ship, until then books (with very nice descriptions of everything) will have to do.

I have to say that I liked this one less than the previous book. Because of the drama. It was just too much, too stupid, too silly. I will write about why and how in a bit.

First up, I was happy that we get to see Jen and Justin again. Happy that we also get a recap on what happened in the time when we last saw them until now. As it has been sometime since The Fishbowl (and that amazing first kiss) ended. I am quite glad that the author didn't decide to give us those years between, while they do sound happy and fun, I don't think I could read chapters upon chapters about them settling down and getting stuff done. :P

The cruise is something that The Network has set up. Justin and Jen think that they can finally have some relaxation, some sweet moments, and some well deserved together time. Sadly, they could have expected The Network's cunning ways. The girls and boys are separated. Yep. And not only that, but Dominic's wife (or should I say ex) and Dominic are also around. And of course Jen's enemy... Ariana! You can imagine this already sets the tone for the book. We just know that there is going to be drama, and J & J also know this. Bye bye cruise of sweet romance, hello cruise of reality drama and poop hitting the fan.

Oh, and Jen is also working on getting the secret ingredient for Sarah's bakery: Sweet Reality from another reality star: Tammy Rae. Throughout the book we see Jen try a lot of things to get Tammy Rae to spit out the secret recipe. I have to say I didn't like Tammy Rae. Especially not later when poop hits the fan. Boy, that woman. Old and grumpy much?

The drama that just quite ruined the book, especially because of the stupidity. And really, how much are you trusting each other if this already causes you to almost break up?
For instance, one of the biggest dramas; Jen gets stuck with her ex (yes, they called in Dominic) during a trip ashore, all sorts of things happen, a certain event happens. There is a bad picture (though it only tells one side of the story and only shows a snapshot). When Jen comes back aboard she immediately goes to Justin to explain and diffuse the situation. Sadly, Jen in all her stupidity immediately does the same she doesn't want her hubs to do when he is going to hear about her situation, as soon as she spots Ariana in her hubs room, hears him call her Ari, she assumes, flips, runs away. Yep. This girl. She doesn't want her hubs to judge her and get the wrong image, but immediately assumes the worst when she spots her enemy in that room. *rolls eyes* Sadly, this wasn't the only thing that was too drama for me. You would think, given that these two are together for at least 1 to 2 years that they would have trust. Yet throughout the book they show that trust is a word they both don't seem to understand/know. :| Sorry, but I did see that they loved each other, that they cared about each other, but trust? I think they need a bit help on that front.

I was happy with the itineraries we got at each chapter + the gossip/confession parts.

Ariana was a bitch, but I guess we should all feel sorry for her? I am not sure I can. It just felt a bit too much for me. Too cliche.

Also for some reason the whole scene on the balcony near the end just had me in a big de ja vu moment. Like I already read the exact same scene, but I know I never read this book. Weird.

I was happy that Rachel and Ed were around. And Danielle also turned out to be quite the sweetheart at moments at least. I was happy with what she did in this book. Good job girl, that is really kind of you.

The proposal? Hey, sorry, but it isn't a spoiler as we know from the first pages that Justin is about to propose to his girl. It was just so cute when he proposed. Though again, I do hope that they both can trust each other a bit more when they are married. And not go in a full divorce mode should something go wrong. Oh wait, I can see this happen. *sighs*

All in all, still a fun book, I had lots of fun reading it, just a shame of the drama. I get that this was a reality show cruise, but was it all needed? Especially given the image it gives us of Justin and Jen's relationship.

Well, I can't wait for the next book. Wedding time!

I loved America's Next Reality Star, so when I was offered an ARC of Sweet Reality, I jumped at the opportunity to get my hands on an advanced copy -- and I loved the second book in the series even better than the first. Funny, fast-paced, and touching, I loved following Jen, Justin, and the rest of the cast as they cruised around the Caribbean. (Also: I want the recipe for Madison's cupcakes.) Looking forward to the final book in this fun-filled trilogy!

Find more in Chill and read

After "The Fishbowl" is over, Justin and Jen are together, living in Miami Florida. Jen is roommates with Justin's twin sister, Sarah and they are about to open their own bakery that will sell cupcakes, cookies and other goodies inspired by reality star. Everything goes well, until strong competition is hosted across the street. The competitor is a well established firm and they have already opened before the girls' bakery grand opening. Now the girls need to find something to attract everyone to their bakery.
Justin and Jen are invited to a ship cruise along with several other reality stars. It is a new kind of a reality show. The exciting thing about that cruise is that that the person that won Totally 80s Bake-Off is going to be in the cruise, so all she has to do is find out her secret ingredient and Sarah will be able to recreate the winning cupcake and attract more customers!
The cruise is not what the couple expected it to be. They are not even sharing the same room! There are characters the reader knows from the previous book and a couple new ones. The whole story evolves around the main characters, their love and insecurities and the atmosphere of a reality show. Even though the drama is there, since it is a reality show and it is pretty much expected, it blends in with the story and the scenes pretty smoothly.
The characters continue to be as we know them from the first book. They generally stick to their structure, apart from a couple twists that are justified eventually.
It is a fast pace easy and funny read that will keep you company over a Saturday afternoon!

A very fun follow-up to the fun AMERICA'S NEXT REALITY STAR! (That said, there's enough context woven into this book that you don't have to read the first one to enjoy it!) Plenty of drama (those chapter-ending cliffhangers kept me turning pages long after my bedtime!) and lots of humor. A very enjoyable read!

A romantic cruise, some cupcakes and friends, what a delicious thought.

Sweet Reality by Laura Heffernan is the second addition of the Reality Star Series and it is great. Jen and Justin are dealing with family problems, a bar exam, a new bakery business, money, and trying to make time for their own relationship. Sounds normal, right? Now add in a offer of a free ocean cruise. This is just what they needed, time to themselves, beautiful scenarios, free publicity for the bakery and no cost to them. There has to be a catch, right?

They will be part of a new reality show called Real Ocean: Caribbean.Jen and Justin have a great relationship and being on a ship with all this negative feedback and people with different agendas really plays with their personal insecurities. On the ship we meet lots of reality stars from the other shows, this doesn’t promote warm fuzzy feeling between Jen and Justin.

It was nice to see some faces from the Fishbowl, like Rachel and Ed. It was nice for Jen to have that little backup that she needed. Justin was a little surprising, he did some things that seemed out of character. Oh, let’s not forget the return of Ariana, she was back in all her glory or was she? Then we meet some other reality stars, I will let you learn about them yourself.

I wanted to mention that I don’t actually watch reality tv, that being said I love this series. I think it appeals to me because even though they are on a reality show, we as readers get to see how the Network manipulates the stars and the viewers. Not to mention, it is easy root for Jen. Oh, you will never in a million years figure out the secret ingredient in Tammy Rae’s cupcakes. Crazy!

My rating is 5 stars. I loved this book this book as much as the first one, America’s Next Reality Star. Thank you Ms. Heffernan for such an awesome story, I read this book in a day. Yes, it is that fabulous! Please keep writing Ms. Heffernan.

“I didn’t come here to make friends.”

If that line didn’t fill your head with reality show villains from the past, this likely isn’t the book for you.

To truly enjoy this fabulously cheesy beach read, you need to have:
1) Seen and enjoyed some reality TV: Bachelor (or –ette), Rupaul’s Drag Race, or even terribly trashy ones like I Love New York – even if you sneak watch them and pretend you don’t.
2) Read book 1.

If you haven’t read book one, stop now. You won’t know or love (or hate) our characters and you need that background for this book.

In book 2, Jen and Justin are about to set off on the vacation of a lifetime – that’s right! A Reality Show Cruise, full of fans, production, and many of America’s most famous - and infamous - Reality show cast members.

But as we know, unscripted doesn’t mean no drama and Jen realizes her dream cruise is full of drama, exes, mean girls, and one very unusual cupcake recipe. Will Jen and Justin end the cruise still being America’s favorite reality couple? Or will production realize that sweetness is kind of boring…unless you add a little spice?

Readers will want to know that the story does have an extremely sad little sub plot. It adds drama, but was maybe a little too depressing for a light read? However there’s a book three in the future and hopefully that sadness can lighten up a little in that book?

An entertaining beach read for those of us who admit we do care what happens in (and beyond) the fantasy suite!

Oh, and a quick note to the author: That cupcake recipe…was so very, very unexpected. Very.

I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.  Thank you!

This is the second on the Reality Star series and in my opinion can not be read as a stand alone.  In order to understand the characters I would recommend reading the series in order.

I think I have said it before but there are some reality shows that are a guilty pleasure for me.  While I only indulge in one, maybe two, I get serious enjoyment out of people making complete idiots out of themselves for their 15 seconds of fame.  Its a great social experiment that I enjoy.

It was much the same with this story.  Over the top scenarios, bickering, fighting and producers out to get their TV gold.  This story really makes fun (in my opinion) of the whole thing.  As a result this series has become a guilty pleasure for me.

While Jen is a little bit of a train wreck, you can't help but be in her corner.  You wonder how she allows herself in to the many scenarios she finds herself in and you want her to come out on top.

From what I could see, it looks like there is going to be a third installment in this series some time next year.  I will be sure to look for it to complete the series!

Laura Heffernan writes in such a fun, accessible manner that her books are hard to put down. This sequel to America's Next Reality Star has everything readers of the first book might expect: friends, enemies (many enemies), suspicions, the biggest sorts of foul-ups and misunderstandings, and plenty of romance. Our hapless stars from the first book appear again here, along with the usual cast of characters. It was great to see them all again (although I wanted to scream at J&J that a reality cruise couldn't possibly be all fun and games).

If you loved the first book like I did, you won't want to miss this sequel. Plus, the glimpse at Book #3 had me both grinning and shaking my head.

I won this e-ARC on Goodreads, but that in no way affects my review.

This is the second book in the Reality Star Series and I must say it was very entertaining.

Jen and Justin are still entertaining as a couple and so are the past characters. This book had great character, a good plot, and was very well written. This book was a great book that's length was just right and so was the drama. All the characters seem to fall into place and this made the book such a joy to read.

This book had a little of everything in it, drama, romance, comedy, and enough going on to keep you interested without getting lost or losing interest in the story. I can’t wait to see what Laura comes up with next because this one was great and will be hard to follow up.

This book combines many of my favorite things: like reality tv, vacations, and sweets. A fun and entertaining story. Jen and Justin will take your mind off the political squabbles going on in our world as Jen struggles to wrest the perfect cupcake recipe with secret ingredients from her fellow reality stars. Complete with cheating exs and vicious reality star rivalries. Just too fun!

Sweet Reality by Laura Heffernan is the second book in the Reality Star series. If you haven't read the first one, no worries, this book can be read as a standalone. A fun, romantic comedy, the newly released Sweet Reality is sure to make your day if you are a lover of the said genre.

Jen and Justin are back together on another reality show. They met in their last show and have been a loved couple since they quit together. This time, they have been invited, along with other stars of various reality shows, to a free cruise to the Caribbean. Jen and Sarah, Justin's sister, are all set to open a cake shop called Sweet Reality when they realize that they have unexpected competition. While Sarah is back home figuring out new recipes to make Sweet Reality unique, Jen and Justin are off to the paid vacation they have been looking forward to and to also get hands on Tammy Rae's cupcake's secret ingredient. But unexpected surprises follow Jen on board when she finds out that Ariana, Justin's ex and Jen's arch enemy, is accompanying them. Among exes, the watchful eyes of the production team and cupcake recipes, Jen realizes that this is going to be one heck of a vacation!

Sweet Reality is a reality show by itself! It has all the necessary ingredients- gossip, loads of drama, exes, love interests, strategies- everything. A well written book, the story sets sail (pun intended) and is an entertainer all the way. Narrative is casual, with specks of humor, and the pace of the story carries readers inside the scheming minds of the contestants and the emotions they go through.

Jen and Justin are this lovable, dreamy couple. Jen's character is so down to earth and relatable. The twist in the story is the secret ingredient of Tammy's cupcakes! Unimaginable! With so many cakes and delicacies around, how can one put the book down?

I enjoyed this book although I must be frank, I do not watch reality shows at all. But the story had a mix of sugar and spice and everything nice! It was worth the read!

Recommended to all who love chick lits and romance!

Jen is BACK! And she’s with her sexy man from Book One.

Sweet Reality is the second book in the Reality Star Series and I highly recommend reading Book One first before attempting this beast.

We’ve got drama drama drama, my friends! Jen is opening a new bakery and there is competition right next door. We have family issues (yikes). Jen and Justin are stressed OUT, people! I mean, how can these two finally begin a relationship when there is so much…stuff!

Not to mention, they’re going to be a part of a new realtiy TV show Real Ocean: Caribbean. We’re taking it to seas! Argg mateys!

My favorite part about Laura Heffernan’s writing is how she seamlessly overlaps everyone’s misconceptions of one another.

Even though I loved the first book, I did not finish this sequel. I kind of wish we started fresh with a new relationship than deal with Jen and Justin’s never-ending woes. There’s romance, there are frenemies, we have all the right ingredients for a contemporary romance except that eau de slow and sexy.

There’s certainly conflict, but the text moved too fast to really build a good climax. I was a little rag doll amongst the rest of the characters, getting swashed around in the dishwasher of despair. I just wanted the cadence to slow down a little.

Now, for those of you who love that fast-paced read, this is definitely for you!

Methinks I’ll set this one aside for a while.

On to the next!

Sweet Reality is the second book in the Reality Star series, so you must read America's Next Reality Star first to really understand, as it takes place about a year after. Jen and Justin have graduated from flirting in front of America, to a full blown romance, and things have taken a more serious turn in love. And then they get offered an all expenses paid cruise for previous stars, which they thought was just what they needed. That's all I'm giving up, so if you want more, just get read the books! Laura Heffernan is a talented, and original author that has hooked me completely. And the shows in her books are so much better than Big Brother in my opinion. It had everything, humor which kept me laughing, sweet romance that will make the most hard people sigh, betrayal that will get the f-bombs dropping like mad, and of course, HIGH DRAMA! Jen & Justin are completely lovable characters that kept me cheering for them like crazy, and many of the previous secondaries came back for more entertainment value. I LOVE this new to me author, and cannot wait to read more by her! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

* I received a kindle copy of this ebook through the Goodreads First Reads Giveaway Program, however, that in no way affects my review or opinions. *

This was my first time reading author Laura Heffernan, but it won't be my last. This book was fun, flirty, and unpredictable. It left the reader wanting more! It made them laugh, cry, and have them sit on the edge of their seat wondering what was going to happen next. The reader frantically turned the pages to see where the story was going to take them next!

The characters made the reader believe in true love and new beginnings. Jen is a fun, flirty, and loyal. She makes me want to become her best friend! She sticks by her friends and she helps them even when it isn't convenient for her...it may at times get down right uncomfortable for her. This book is a lot of fun and it makes the reader smile while reading it. Grab a copy of it and be prepared to laugh out loud (a lot)!

In real life, reality television is not my thing. I honestly feel bad for the contestants on shows like these and I generally don't watch them, so I wasn't too sure how I'd feel about reading one. Since I jumped in with the second book in this series, I decided to start with the first and read both, so you're sort of getting a double review here? I absolutely loved them both! The author's writing style is fantastic and Jen's character drew me in immediately. I found myself thoroughly addicted to the story before the end of the first chapter. The idea is fresh and exciting and I couldn't wait to get to the second book in the series! That one didn't disappoint, either! Honestly, I'm shamelessly obsessed here. I'm in love with the characters and I want nothing more than to live in this fictional world forever at this point. As far as I'm concerned, this story can continue for years to come!

A stellar sequel to America's Next Reality Star! I enjoyed every page of this fun novel (while developing a serious jones for yummy cupcakes) and hope that there will be another installment in this series.

Heffernan excels at witty dialogue, fast-paced plotting, and painting a vivid reality-show scene...from the constant paranoia that must dog contestants about whether their on-screen relationships are real, to unseen relationships with producers/camera people, to the ruthlessness of the business.

The chemistry between Jen & Justin is still palpable, and you'll root for them to pull through all of the obstacles they face in remaining a couple. I loved the return of Ariana, the villain from the first novel, and how Heffernan manages to keeps that character true to form while giving her an interesting emotional arc.

If you're looking for a sweet read, this is the novel for you.

HUGE twist at the end and a few shocking secrets that I had not a clue until it was revealed!! The 2nd book isn't as good as the first, but I still loved it. Again, I'm not that big into reality TV, but this book was such a fun and entertaining read. One of the big secret was discovered by Justin first before Jen found out. If he had told her from the beginning....I guess there really wouldn't be so much drama and a story for the 2nd book. There were annoying couple drama that made me want to shake some sense into both Justin and Jen, but their insecurities and flaws make them relatable and everyone makes mistakes. I'm looking forward to the 3rd book!

Sweet Reality is a fun romantic comedy that will whisk the reader away! I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy and this was my first introduction to Jen and the gang. *I read this in exchange for an honest review. It's taken from my book blog, the eccentric trilogy*

I sometimes struggle with reading sequels. The first book is often so much better than the second or third, which can sometimes ruin the entire series for you. Even years later, the prospect of reading the Hunger Games frightens me because Peeta’s character turns so nasty in the third book, and poor Prim had such a rushed death scene. Honestly though, I’m so glad I persisted with this one because it’s just as well written as its predecessor.

In my review for the prequel, my main criticism was that the ending felt hurried, so I had high hopes that this novel would tie up some of the loose ends – something definitely achieved. Jen’s about to open a cake business with Justin’s sister, Sarah, with the unique selling point of the baked goods being reality television themed. Meanwhile, Justin’s finishing his studies in law and helping the others out with the legal side of opening the shop. The couple also decide to go on a cruise for reality television stars, in which a few familiar faces pop up again. Typically, Jen gets the worst luck possible and finds herself stuck on a cruise with her enemy, Ariana, and her ex-boyfriend, as well as the wife he hid from her throughout their past relationship.

Jen definitely retains the same flaws as in the last book; she’s easy to agitate, insecure, bitter, has severe trust issues… this is excellent. Jen is far from a perfect person, that’s what makes her real and relatable, especially after the last serious relationship she had. Similarly, Justin is so stressed out with family problems, worrying over when to propose, and his academic results, that we see some of his less ideal boyfriend traits. Ariana’s character has a very clever and interesting twist at the end, making her character have dimensions and development which I adored. Another praise has to go to the author for including a deaf character, and subtly approaching the challenges the deaf have to face, I really hope that in the next book we see more of this character, or Jen learns sign language. Ed and Rachel are such lovely people, wonderful friends for Jen to have made, I can only compliment them too.

Friendships were another highlight of this novel, both old and new ones, Heffernan wrote them with the perfect amount of banter and support that’s realistically involved. The relationship between Jen and Justin was so problematic though, that I have to confess I kind of hoped they’d break up at times – it’s clear that Jen needs more time to realise that she can fully trust Justin, and they could certainly use a bit more communication. Maybe she needed more of a break after her last relationship? Although, they did have a couple of calmer, cute moments.

As usual, Heffernan writes in an imaginative way, including snippets of private interviews, news reports, and standard narrative. This creative written style is lifted even more by the measures of humour and drama, poor Jen really has to go through some mortifying situations. And, oh my goodness, that secret ingredient had me laughing out loud. I’d really recommend this series for anyone that wants a funny, light read.

Jen had left the reality show early and taken a sure prize and Justin followed after her. It’s a year later and Justin and Jen are in a full romance now and happy. Jan plans on using her winners from the reality show to invest in a bakery with Justin’s sister Madison who is now Jen’s best friend.Madison and Jen were showcasing a lot of the deserts that had been on the reality show. The name of their bakery was Sweet Reality. Then a rival bakery opened up across the street from Sweet Reality and Jen needs a special ingredient to pull out in front of the other bakery. Then Jen and Justin are contacted by the network and offered an all expense week long cruise for previous reality t v stars. Jen and Justin thought that was just what they needed. Ariana had been Jen’s nemesis and had claimed Justin as her own even if it wasn’t true while they were on The FishBowl. Now she was also going to be on the cruise. Jen’s ex cheating boyfriend Dominick had also been on the show and was going on the cruise.
I loved this book. I loved how the author brought back a lot of the characters from the first book. I do advise you read the first book first if possible as it will give you the background you need for everything to come together. In this story there was: drama, humor, romance, betrayal. conflict, tension, and a lot more. This book has a great plot and is fast paced. The was a second plot that was depressing and I felt that really wasn’t needed not as sad as it was anyway. There was a lot of twists and turns in this story. This was basically a fun read. I was laughing out loud at times. Even with the subplot I really liked this book. I loved the characters and the twists and turns and I recommend.

Sweet Reality by Laura Hefferan is the 2nd book in her Reality Star series. Sweet Reality continues the nice cute romance between our couple from the first book, Jen and Justin. If you enjoy Reality shows, then you will get a kick out of this series. Jen is starting her own bakery with Justin’s sister showcasing many of the desserts from the show they were on. When a popular bakery chain opens across the street, Jen is concerned that they will fail.

Both Jen and Justin became popular when they became and couple and walked off the show. Now they are invited back to a new reality show cruise, and since Jen needs the money for her bakery, and wants new dessert recipes, they decide to do the show.

Many of the people from the first show will also be on the cruise, including Jen’s mortal enemy, Ariana, her ex-boyfriend, Dominic, and the friends she made. It was mostly a fun group, with the few reminders of the nasty competitors, who will do anything to break up Jen and Justin.

What follows is an adventure where things go wrong, and their relationship is put on the brink. But true love will always prevail. This is a difficult review to write, as to tell too much more would ruin the story. There is lots of humor, and even a sad element added near the end. Sweet Reality was a lighthearted cute romance, giving us a look at what really goes behind a reality show, as well as a very likeable couple.

At the end of America's Next Reality Star, the reader watched Jen and Justin ride off into the sunset. At the start of Sweet Reality, we meet up with the couple sixteen months into their established relationship. Jen and Justin are a typical couple with typical challenges. Justin is struggling to pass the bar and help his parents. Jen is starting a bakery with Sarah, Justin's twin sister. When offered a free cruise, the couple understandably jumps at the chance for some relaxation and romance. Of course, the cruise is part of a reality show which brings together stars from various reality genres. Jen and Justin have their relationship tested as they face the twists and turns of being stuck on a cruise ship with scheming producers and people from their past, as well as some new characters that add drama to the mix. Heffernan does a good job of weaving together a cohesive story with this cast of characters. She is also able to inject humor into many of the exchanges, and she pulls out a number of laugh out loud surprises. Heffernan manages to make Jen and Justin more than just a romantic couple. She infuses them with a maturity and intelligence that is a throw-back to a Hepburn/Tracy kind of screwball comedy. I thoroughly enjoyed Sweet Reality, even more than the first book. This group of friends and frenemies and their adventures make for a fun and easy read. I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

Sweet Reality was great! This book had even more craziness and hi-jinx than the first book. I loved the first one and this was just as enjoyable.

Jen Reid has left Seattle and moved to FL. She's become roommates and best friends with Justin's sister and they're opening a bakery called Sweet Reality using baked goods based on reality show characters. Genius marketing idea, btw! But Jen and Justin are offered the opportunity to go on a "reality" cruise. Due to a competing bakery opening up across the street from Sweet Reality, Jen and Justin need to go to try and get an amazing recipe for cupcakes from an 80's pop star who will also be on the cruise.

Once they get on the cruise, they meet up with some of their old friends from The Fishbowl. But there are other reality stars there as well, including Jen's ex-boyfriend Dominic and his ex-wife, Danielle. She got her own reality show after The Fishbowl aired.

Arianna is also on the cruise and seems to be causing mayhem everywhere Jen turns. Dominic wants to try and get Jen back. But Jen keeps waiting for Justin to propose so there isn't really a love triangle so much as a love heptagon. The only 2 people who really love each other are Jen and Justin. But there is so much secret keeping and miscommunication that it takes a long time for the two of them to remember that.

Again, I highly recommend this for those who love a quick romance to read! Tons of fluff but oh so much fun!

Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It took me a whole month to finish this book! On the surface, it was a cute continuation of the first book in the series, this time focusing on Jen and her attempts to move on with Justin and with their bakery business. The cruise ship was a perfect setting, ripe with opportunities for fun and/or complications. I was rooting for J&J's success, and I had to smile at the continued problems that Jen would have each time she felt she was making progress. But it often felt as though Jen was contributing to her own difficulties. She would negatively respond to innocent remarks, suspecting an ulterior motive behind everyone's actions even when it wasn't warranted. Or she'd impulsively take action that would obviously set her up for a disaster. She frustrated me more this time, but I'll admit that Justin's silence and Dominic's intrusion did legitimately contribute to Jen's concerns. The reality show nature of the cruise included a lot of backbiting and cattiness, which I wished could be toned down a bit, but the witty banter and amusing situations did help to overcome that. All in all, I will continue with this series because I generally like the main characters and want to see what happens next in their always-entertaining lives.

I won this book on Goodreads giveaways. Jen Reid's life after walking off a reality show has been great--she's gone from being a broke twenty-four-year-old Seattleite with no love life and no job to the twenty-five-year-old who got the guy, moved to Miami, and is starting a bakery with her best friend. She thinks her showmance love might be about to propose. And with mouthwatering goodies based on everyone's favorite shows, her business, Sweet Reality, is destined for success.
That is, until a killer competitor opens right across the street. If she's going to save Sweet Reality, Jen has to come up with a secret ingredient--like the recipe that won Totally 80s Bake-Off. Jen can get it--if she steps back into the spotlight. A cute, tale that you will love if you are into Reality Shows. 4 stars

OMG!!! If you love reality TV then you will love this book! Sweet Reality is book 2 in this series and you really must read these in order.

In the first book Jennifer gets cast on a reality show called The Fishbowl. She has nothing else to lose when signing up because her personal life is already a wreck and since she is single, unemployed and essentially homeless she figures what the heck. Fast forward just over a year and we find Jen in a much better place, in love and getting ready to open up a bakery with her best friend. When Jen and Justin have the opportunity to go on another reality show they find themselves on an all expenses paid cruise to the Caribbean.

Of course as with most reality shows, expect the unexpected seems to be the theme with this show as well. Not only is her biggest enemy on the trip, so is her cheating ex boyfriend. Jen and Justin definitely have their relationship tested several times, and there are lots of twists I never saw coming. I loved the characters and really thought this book was a fun read. I was sad to have it end because I wanted to know more about what was going to happen after they got off of the cruse.

A must read book for sure! -By Alisa

This series is a great light beach read for a sunny weekend.

In the acknowledgements at the end of the book the author states that she had more even more fun writing this book than the first Reality Star book, I think that shines through easily. Sweet Reality pulls in the characters that you love and love to hate from the first installment and peppers in a few additional supporting characters that fit easily into the mix.

I enjoyed the way the author portrayed reality TV in all its cheesy/ campy glory. On more than on occasion I caught myself giggling out loud, I mean c'mon, who hasn't reacted impulsively like Jen does even knowing full well you're being goaded for a reaction!

This is definitely a fun read to indulge in while you've got your toes in the sand and a fruity drink in hand!
