TRAVERSE CITY, Mi. (WPBN/WGTU) -- Traverse City Police Officer Michael Peters resigned Monday, amid an ongoing investigation into his actions at a "Love Trumps Hate" rally.

Traverse City Police Chief Jeff O'Brien said he met with Peters Monday evening, and he submitted his resignation letter. The city manager and city attorney were also at the meeting.

Witnesses say Peters drove up to the Open Space during Friday's anti-Trump rally in a pickup truck, flying a Confederate flag, and an American flag on the back.

Peters is an 18-year veteran with the police department. He was off duty at the time of the incident.

Even though Peters has resigned, Traverse City Police are continuing their criminal investigation. They say they have photo evidence that alcohol was involved.

Chief O'Brien says it is not illegal to drink in the open space but could not say whether it was illegal to drink in the parking lot at the open space.

"We want to know the extent of that alcohol and see if there was any violations that were committed by officer Peters," O'Brien said.
