Dong Energy hopes to secure subsidies within weeks to build what could be the world’s biggest offshore wind farm off the coast of Yorkshire.

The Danish company said that it would enter the Hornsea Two project into the government’s auction for renewable energy subsidies, which begins next week with results due next month.

Winners will secure a contract guaranteeing them a price for the electricity they generate for 15 years.

Dong has planning consent to build up to 1.8 gigawatts of turbines at Hornsea Two, which would be the world’s biggest wind farm. It is already building the 1.2 gigawatt Hornsea One project near by.

Doubts had been raised over whether the contracts being awarded this year — worth up to £290 million a year
