Why this petition matters

Started by Ashley Hoopes

This winter Salt Lake City faces a homeless crisis unlike anything we've known. Our state's shelters are currently full or are operating beyond capacity. The overflow shelter in Midvale that has opened every winter to help with the increased demand that comes with colder temperatures, is already full. The Road Home served as many people by May of 2016 as it had the entire previous year of 2015.

Yet the City has no plan in place for the hundreds of homeless who currently live along and around 500 West, or the many families who are camping or living in their cars, and will be seeking emergency shelter this winter.

Salt Lake City and County are currently in the process of drafting a vital long term plan to solve homelessness. But in addition to that, we need an immediate short term plan for the homeless who are facing the upcoming winter and need a temporary shelter solution for the next 120 days.

We ask the Salt Lake City Mayor's Office to deliver temporary winter shelter location options for the winter season of November 1 2016 to March 1 2017 to the Salt Lake City Council by October 10th 2016. Please add your name to this petition to ensure that the most vulnerable among us do not suffer from death and loss of limbs this winter season.
