The number of jobs axed at Rolls-Royce in the past two years sailed through the 5,000 mark after the struggling enginemaker told 800 of its marine workers to find another berth.

The loss of one in six jobs in its maritime division will take the Rolls workforce to below 50,000. Most of the marine jobs will go in the company’s Scandinavian operations. There are likely to be only a handful of losses in the UK, at its Bristol and Derby offices.

At fault is the drawn-out downturn in the marine engineering industry, where the crash in the price of crude oil has all but put a hold on new investment in vessels for the oil and gas industry. The news comes as Warren East, the
