This is the shocking moment two jewel thieves leapt from a speeding van during a police chase.

A video clip, released by police, shows one of the robbers jumping out of the back and making a run for it as the van speeds around a roundabout in Staffordshire.

The second man can be seen doing the same and he falls to the ground as the van swerves around the corner.

They were part of a four-man gang from Greater Manchester that robbed a Cheshire jewellers and made off with a clutch of valuable watches.

During a pursuit involving 20 officers and two helicopters, two of the robbers leapt out of the vehicle to avoid capture.

Police later abandoned the chase due to concerns for public safety.

However, all four were later arrested in the Staffordshire area.

Warrington Crown Court heard how four men covered their faces with balaclavas and forced a hole in the window of Moodys Jewellers, in Pillory Street, Nantwich, on July 27.

They took handfuls of watches before making off in a getaway vehicle, which police later intercepted and gave chase to.

Lewis Chalmers, 27, Patrick Massey, 26, Darren McAndrew, 32 and Joseph Schofield, 20, were sentenced to a combined total of 30 years in prison - after variously admitting to a series of offences incluedding robbery, aggravated vehicle taking and dangerous driving.

At the time, Moodys said on their Facebook page: “Whilst we were safely protected inside the shop by our wonderful security measures, a violent gang of four attacked the windows with various means ranging from a drain grid cover to a Samurai sword.

“After two minutes of trying, and causing great damage to the windows and door, the robbers fled with just eight Tudor watches.

“Following a 28 minute pursuit by Cheshire police, working with four other forces - North West Motorway Group, Central Police Motorway Group, West Midlands Motorway Group and Staffordshire Police - they tracked down and followed a van on the M6.

“Two Police helicopters were also involved and the robbers were all arrested and, happily, are now behind bars.”

Chalmers, from Oswald Road, Chorlton, and Massey, of Pegwell Drive, Salford, were each sentenced to nine years in prison for robbery, aggravated vehicle taking and affray.

McAndrew, of Edlington Walk, Newton Heath, was handed eight years for robbery, aggravated vehicle taking and affray.

Schofield, of Dob Brook Close, Newton Heath, was given 48 months in prison for robbery, dangerous driving and affray.

Speaing after the case, Det Con Craig Stevens, of Cheshire Police, said: “This is a great result and highlights that we are effectively borderless - no matter where you run, we will work together to capture you and bring you before the courts.

“As well as working with our colleagues from other forces and agencies, we had members of the community coming together to capture footage of the offenders and contacting police with information to help with our enquiries.

“I’d like to thank everyone for helping to put these dangerous men behind bars.”
