A new study puts Killeen in the top 10 most dangerous cities in Texas.
The study, conducted by the Darrow Law Firm of Houston, used data including 2014 crime rates per 100,000 residents, police presence and investment, along with community socioeconomic factors that place Killeen at No. 7 of Texas’ most dangerous cities.
Odessa took first place as the most dangerous city in Texas, with Corpus Christi in second, Beaumont in third and Houston in fourth. Amarillo and Brownsville took fifth and sixth, respectively.
The study’s methodology gave triple weight to crime data for each city and full weight for police investment and socioeconomic factors such as poverty, unemployment and the percentage of residents who are high school graduates. The FBI’s uniform crime reporting program, data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and each city’s police budget were used to compile the study.
In a recent news release, the Killeen Police Department announced Killeen’s crime had dropped in almost all areas except for violent crimes such as murder and rape.
“While being a victim of any crime is enough to make one feel unsafe, violent crimes have a much more profound impact on public safety in a city than do property crimes or drug crimes,” the study said.
The Killeen Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the new study.
