Ohio EPA awards grants to three environmental education programs in NE Ohio

Included among the Ohio EPA grants was $25,000 to the Lake Erie Nature & Science Center, Bay Village, to expand on an existing Climate Expedition field trip program with Ohio State University's Stone Laboratory on Gibraltar Island in Lake Erie.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Ohio EPA awarded three grants totaling $117,468 to fund environmental education programs in Northeast Ohio.

The grants will be awarded to:

  • Oberlin College's Environmental Studies Program. $49,689. To expand the Environmental Dashboard technology in the Oberlin, Cleveland, Toledo and Akron school districts. The technology helps students visualize how water and energy flow through buildings and communities;
  • Lake Erie Nature & Science Center, Bay Village. $25,000. To fund its program, "Bringing Local Relevance to Climate Literacy Principles," and to expand on an existing Climate Expedition field trip program that has served teachers and students at Ohio State University's Stone Laboratory for more than three years;
  • Earth Day Coalition. $42,779. To fund the program, "Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions through Alternative Fuels," when it hosts three Fuel for Thought workshops for fleet managers. The Cleveland-based Earth Day Coalition is a collaboration between the Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works, the city of Cleveland's Office of Sustainability, Cuyahoga Community College, and the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency.

Statewide, seven grants were awarded totaling $247,874. The Ohio Environmental Education Fund provides money each year for environmental education projects serving kindergarten through university students, the public and the regulated community.

Eligible grant recipients include environmental groups, public and private schools, colleges and universities, trade or professional organizations, businesses and state and local governments.
