editor’s note Fashionably late in an industry that understands that fashion waits for no one could lead to unfashionable consequences. What with global warming and all, seasons are starting and ending later. Having said that, this Spring issue is very much timely in its stylish arrival.

Looking at the season’s trends in our main feature, we also tackle some micro-trends including the sock and sliders phenomena. Our grooming pages offer you some great skincare options to kick-start the new season and maintain a healthy grooming regiment. Not forgetting how often we look to use spring as an opportunity to shop for new looks and the season’s items, we’ve prepared three modern fashion editorials for you that lay out the key looks for the season, transitioning into summer. We’ve also included some items to fight off the spring chill in the evening in out ‘Cottonmouth’ story and have sought the best of the best for ‘Urban Knight’ which illustrates amazing fashion looks for the season. If you do anything major this season, make sure it’s to subscribe to our newsletter, here; in order for you to stay in tune with the new developments underway and to be first to know where we have moved to once our relocation process is complete. Stay fashion savvy and stylishly African.

Vox Populi

Sandal Up & Sock It!

The big deal with this small trend is that it’s actually popular. Monde Mtsi puts his foot in it to find out more. Some time ago in the distant past, a random low-key surfer/skater thought it cute to walk down to the convenient store to get some milk and Oreos in his sandals while wearing his socks. It then spiraled from one person to a group of them; and then trend analysts caught on, sold the information to designers and collections were created inspired by this uninspiring look. The notion is that it’s trendy. The question is why? Is this micro trend more about the rebellious connotations it has to standard mainstream fashion? If so, does the mere fact that it is a trend don’t counter its intension to be against the grain? Let’s say for instance it’s about practicality; is there a need for this practical combination to be so overly designed and styled? The socks are in an abundance of colours, patterns and prints and the sandals have taken their own forms from traditional trail sandals to branded sliders and even platform sandals in multiple colours. Perhaps it’s the idea of finding something new in fashion to be inspired by and to capitalize on. Brands, both locally and globally, have grabbed this 16

micro trend and run wild with it, allowing it to pick up momentum this current cycle – even more so than its last fashion cycle a couple of years back. What’s changed since 2014, which is more or less the last time socks and sandals was a big deal. Nothing really. Apart from the designers hoping you forgot it was a thing last time, the trend is still the same. From the socks to the sandals they are paired with, you’re better off wearing the current pair of socks you have with your current pair of sliders or sandals. What I will hand to the trend and its opportunity is this: If you are a fashion lover and stylish person find an appropriate manner to execute this micro trend, you’re on the money. Consider pairing it with a work suit mid-week to end week; there’s also the opportunity to sandal-up with a short suit or for something more relaxed, a sports luxe ensemble. Either way, don’t feel the pinch to rock this trend. If you do, make sure you give us something to remember.

Go Shorty, Suit Up!

The suit just got cut short. Monde Mtsi [ad]dresses the subject of formal wear taking on half measures as a full agenda in fashion. The suit is not just a suit anymore. Gone are the days when spring and summer days turning into night meant a complete overhaul of your day look to accommodate your night life. This season, the short suit is what is packing heat and we’re all for it. Tapered for day and night and casual to smart, the short suit is the go-to micro trend for a dapper gent who lives life in the spur of the moment.

gle-button and single breast for a casual look, pairing it with tapered shorts and some moccasins, boat shoes or sneakers. Going the formal route would suggest doubling up on everything: buttons and breast, pairing it with tailored shorts with a turned-up hem and some gorgeous brogues. In the end, the idea is to play and mix and match pieces to create a variety of looks for all sorts of occasions.

This trend has by far been one of the most consistent spring and summer micro trends. Its winning factor is its ability to adapt for work and immediately for play, with perhaps a switch up of the shoes from formal loafers to maybe boat shoes or sneakers. It has a variety of pairing options: from tapered shorts, turn-up hem shorts and even loosely fitted Bermuda shorts. All this, with either a oneor two-button, single- or double-breasted blazer.

So this season, when you’re considering what to wear to the polo or to lunch on the yacht with the guys, consider a linen short suit for the occasion. Wear it confidently with a dose of festivity and you’re bound to be a fashion talking point at the event. Remember to complement a neutral suit with a colourful print or graphic shirt for personality and try to step out of your comfort zone.

Of course the idea is to go sin-

[PAUL B.] When we heard Paul Bradely favoured designers, Buki Akib and Stiaan Louw – two of our faves, and Eguana Kampala – a new name to us, we were sold; or is that bought! Born and raised in Kampala, this red pepper lion, 23 years of age, broke into modeling in 2013 under Joram Model Management in Uganda – since then it seems the world has been his oyster. Apart from sketching amazing fashion illustrations, Paul runs his own cushion design business, assists his Mum with the Events Management company and teaches Art and Industrial Design part-time. So what keeps him in the fashion and model industry? “I love the art behind modeling,” muses Bradely, unashamedly. “There’s something magic about movement, about posture and how people react differently to the same gestures. The networking and travel opportunities are a great bonus. You get to experience a variety of culture and open your mind to so much more. Who could say no to such a worldly education.” Bradely always carries a notebook and pen for all those spontaneous bursts of inspiration and ideas. In case of last minute casting calls and go-sees, his portfolio and z-cards are packed and ready for action. Having made it to Cape Town and walked South African Menswear Week (SAMW), Paul has ticked something off his bucket list. What’s next you wonder? Setting up a fashion line is top of the list at the moment for Bradely, with extending his Ugandian cushion business to the borders of South Africa and furthering his modeling career. The stars are steadily aligning for Paul and we look forward to seeing him grow.

[UTHMAN B.] Fresh off the set with Superbalist, 22 year old Uthman Bangura thinks if he we to be a fruit, an apple would suffice. We think perhaps a tomato… Born in Freetown, Sierre Leone, Uthman has been modeling for close to two years now after being discovered and signed on to ISI Models Nigeria. Incredibly free-spirited, humble and constantly smiling, Bangura is the kind of Gemini whose twin sides are the same split personality and flavoured like his favourite colour – dark wine. “I love walking the runway,” chuckles Uthman. “There’s something magical about being able to rock any look but any designer and just setting the catwalk on flames. I love modeling and all the opportunities it presents.” Uthman, who constantly has his mobile phone on hand, is a fan of Maroon 5’s Love Somebody. In his recent visit to Cape Town, South Africa, he not only shot for a few brands, but walked South African Menswear Week (SAMW) and visited his SA agency, TWENTY Management. A surprise for us was him being a part-time waiter at a restaurant back home. What we did expect of him is his obsession with FashionTV. His passion for the modeling industry has allowed him not to have any specific favourites among the fashion designers but instead, share the love and respect for African designers across the continent. Bangura aspires to become an international male model, walking the ramps of both Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks. Having witnessed him in action during SAMW, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg and walk Lagos Fashion and Design Week, we don’t doubt for a second his dreams will come true. MM

Your trousers are going short this season; not booty shorts short, but short enough to show some leg. Is your summer body ready? We’re stoked about this trend because men finally have a solid reason to rock shorts to the office and get away with it during meetings. Worn during the week with a day shirt and blazer, the shorts move from casual to formal in a simple switch. Take them to the beach for drinks at the bar with the boys with an extra-length Hawaiian shirt and boat shoes. Whichever route you choose to go, remember to keep them at knee-length to easily cross the bridge between formal and casuaL. TO
